Half-Life 2: Episode Two: Walkthrough & Tips
This is a chapter-by-chapter walkthrough of Valve's 2007 episode. It covers the enemies Episode Two added, how to kill Hunters and Striders reliably, the Little Rocket Man gnome achievement, and how to play it on a modern PC.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the November 2024 Half-Life 2 20th Anniversary Update (episodes folded into Half-Life 2) and the 2022 Steam Deck update. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- You may already own it. Since the Half-Life 2 20th Anniversary Update (November 2024), Episode One and Episode Two come with the base Half-Life 2 on Steam. You launch them from its main menu. The standalone Episode Two app still exists for older owners.
- Play Episode One first. Episode Two picks up seconds after it ends, with Gordon and Alyx on the derailed train outside City 17.
- Episode Two has 7 chapters and takes about 4–6 hours on a first run. It has no new weapons. It adds new enemies, a car, and a new gravity-gun tool.
- The Gravity Gun is your best weapon. Saw blades, explosive barrels, tires, and scrap metal all work as ammo. Saw blades can kill a Hunter in one or two hits.
- Hunters are the main threat. Hit them with thrown heavy objects or ram them with the car. Pistol and SMG fire takes too long.
- Pick up the gnome. A garden gnome in "Riding Shotgun" can be carried to the rocket at the end for the Little Rocket Man achievement. It's the most famous achievement in the game.
- Turn on developer commentary for a second playthrough. Speech-bubble nodes play Valve design talks and are well worth hearing.
- Quicksave often (F6). Load with F9. Hunter and Antlion Guardian fights punish being caught without a save.

What's New in Episode Two
| Addition |
What it is |
How to deal with it |
| Hunter |
Fast three-legged Combine synth that fires exploding flechettes and charges |
Throw heavy objects with the Gravity Gun, ram it with the car, or use explosives. Strafe behind cover when the flechettes glow. |
| Antlion Worker |
Yellow-green antlion that spits acid in an arc |
Kill at range. They burst into acid when they die, so don't finish them up close. |
| Antlion Guardian |
A glowing, poisonous Antlion Guard variant in the caves |
Keep moving, stay out of its gas, and fight with the SMG, shotgun, and grenades where you have room. |
| Zombine (returning from Episode One) |
Zombified Combine soldier that pulls a grenade |
Back off when you hear the pin, or grab the grenade with the Gravity Gun and throw it back. |
| Combine Advisor |
Psychic grub-like leaders with a much bigger story role |
Story set pieces, not a normal fight |
| Muscle car |
A fast two-seater with a radar that shows supply caches |
Your Hunter-killing tool in the open chapters |
| Magnusson Device |
A sticky bomb you launch with the Gravity Gun at Striders |
Stick it, then shoot it to detonate. See the finale section. |
Chapter Walkthrough
Chapter 1: To the White Forest
You start in the train wreck. Follow Alyx through the ruined tracks and a series of mine and cave areas while antlions and zombies attack. There's no Antlion Guard fight in this chapter; the threats are swarms of regular antlions, so use the Gravity Gun on barrels and debris and keep your back to a wall. At the end of the chapter a Hunter ambushes the pair and Alyx is critically wounded, which sets up the next two chapters.
Tips: Use every explosive barrel. Crouch-jump over debris to get to the ammo crates the game hides above head height.
Chapter 2: This Vortal Coil
A Vortigaunt takes Alyx's care over while you go into the antlion nest to find the larval extract (from the Nectarium) needed to heal her. This is a long cave chapter.
- Antlion Grubs glow along the walls. Squashing them drops small health nuggets.
- Antlion Workers show up in large numbers. Take them at range.
- The Antlion Guardian appears here, but you can't kill it yet. The story needs it alive to protect the extract, so this is a chase: run, don't fight.
Chapter 3: Freeman Pontifex
This is where you finally fight the Antlion Guardian, on the surface, alongside an Antlion Guard and waves of smaller antlions, before the Vortigaunts use the extract to heal Alyx. It's poisonous, so keep moving, use the space to circle it, and keep your shotgun and SMG loaded. Let the Vortigaunts pull aggro while you flank, then watch the vortessence ritual and a key story moment.
Chapter 4: Riding Shotgun
You get the car. Drive through the countryside and wooded roads with Alyx riding along.
- Grab the gnome. Look for Gnome Chompski early in the chapter and put him in the car or carry him. He has to stay with you until the rocket in Chapter 7.
- Watch for bridge and ramp sections where you need to get out and clear a blockage.
- Expect Combine soldiers and your first straight fight with Hunters, at a radio tower. Stay near the car. A Combine Advisor also shows up in a barn in this chapter.
Chapter 5: Under the Radar
The car gets a radar that shows supply caches and threats. Hunters patrol this chapter in groups. Ram them at speed, since the car kills Hunters very efficiently, then back off and ram again. The radar caches are optional but well stocked.
Chapter 6: Our Mutual Fiend
You reach White Forest, meet Dr. Arne Magnusson, and see Eli and Kleiner again. Explore the base, learn the Magnusson Device, and get ready for the final push. There's a tense story scene in the base. Pay attention to it, because it sets up the finale.
Chapter 7: T-Minus One
The finale: defend the rocket from a Strider assault. Striders come in waves with Hunters escorting them.
- Drive to Magnusson Device dispensers at the stations around the valley.
- Kill the escorting Hunters first. They shoot Magnusson Devices out of the air.
- Stick a Magnusson Device on the Strider by launching it with the Gravity Gun, then shoot it with any gun to detonate. One good hit kills a Strider.
- Use the radar to track Striders heading for the base, and prioritize those closest to it.
After the defense, the rocket launches. The ending then happens, which is the last Half-Life story beat until Half-Life: Alyx.
Achievements and Collectibles
- Little Rocket Man: Carry Gnome Chompski from Riding Shotgun all the way through, and put him in the rocket before launch in T-Minus One. He can ride in the car, but you have to carry him on foot sections. Don't leave him behind at transitions.
- Other achievements reward finding all the radar supply caches, squashing all Antlion Grubs, and killing enemies in creative ways, such as throwing things with the Gravity Gun, killing with their own grenades, or using the car. Look at the in-game achievement list before your run so you know which chapters matter.
- Some chapter-specific achievements are easy to miss because they rely on one set piece. Keep a quicksave before each chapter's big fight.
Difficulty Advice
- Normal is the intended experience. On Hard, Hunters and Antlion Guardians get punishing, and you'll lean heavily on the car and physics objects.
- Easy is fine for story-first players. The puzzles don't change.
- The finale is the hardest section at every difficulty. Save between Strider waves.
Playing on a Modern PC
- Episode Two runs on the updated Source build that shipped with the 20th Anniversary Update. It's Steam Deck Verified, thanks to the 2022 UI and input update.
- Field of view: Adjust it in Options → Video, or with
fov_desired in the console. The slider shows the maximum your build allows.
- Commentary: Options → Game → developer commentary, or pick commentary when starting a chapter.
- Controller support works out of the box.
- Linux is supported natively (added in 2013), and VR headset support was added in 2013, though it's experimental.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Fighting Hunters with bullets. It burns ammo. Use physics objects or the car.
- Getting out of the car in open Hunter areas. Your car is armor and a weapon.
- Losing the gnome at a level transition. Keep him with you when a chapter loads.
- Ignoring the Hunters in T-Minus One. They'll shoot your Magnusson Devices down.
- Skipping the Grubs. Their nuggets are free healing in a chapter where medkits are scarce.
Advanced Tips
- Flechette return: If a Hunter's flechettes stick into an object, launch that object back at the Hunter with the Gravity Gun. The unexploded flechettes detonate on impact for extra damage.
- Other Hunter answers: They resist bullets but not blunt force or explosions. The .357, crossbow, RPG, SMG grenades, and Pulse Rifle energy balls all work when there's nothing to throw.
- Car physics: Rolling back and ramming again is faster than chasing a Hunter. Aim for Hunters in the open, not ones under cover.
- Strider priority: The radar shows which Strider is closest to the base. A Strider that reaches the base can end the run.
- Zombine grenades: Catch the grenade with the Gravity Gun and fling it into a crowd.
