A practical guide to Grim Dawn: how masteries, attributes, devotions, and resistances work, how to level a first character, what the Fangs of Asterkarn expansion adds, and how to push into the endgame.
Researched September 2026 — current as of patch v1.3.0.8 and the Fangs of Asterkarn expansion (released July 23, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Crate calls its final expansion "very much Grim Dawn 1.5". It launched on Steam and GOG on July 23, 2026 (Xbox followed later), alongside the free v1.3.0 patch. Crate has shipped several fixes since, up to v1.3.0.8.
| Addition | What it does |
|---|---|
| Berserker (10th mastery) | Melee shapeshifter that can transform into beastlike forms. Raises mastery combinations to 45 |
| Asterkarn region | A new region in the west (snowy peaks, frozen caverns, forest valleys, hot springs). It grows the world by about 32%, over 80% the size of the base game |
| Ascendant mode | A harder campaign mode where every dungeon and boss is scaled up for endgame characters |
| The Dread | A threat that spawns in Ascendant mode. It was controversial at launch, and Crate committed (July 25, 2026) to an optional altar setting that stops it spawning unless you boost it |
| Equipment Ascension / Item Awakening | Lets you upgrade many Epic items toward Legendary-tier power |
| Affix Transmutation | Rerolls affixes on magic and rare items |
| Potion Customization | Turns potions into tonics with custom restoration or unique buffs |
| Three new Kurn factions | New reputation tracks and storylines |
| Crucible and Shattered Realm | Crucible gets 30 more waves; Shattered Realm gets new regions and boss arenas |
Crate has also promised two new rogue-like dungeons as free post-launch updates. The first major content update, v1.3.1, was slated for public testing in September and release around the end of September/early October 2026 (per Crate's August 19 post), so check patch notes if something here differs. The base game, Ashes of Malmouth, and Forgotten Gods are still sold separately. Fangs is its own DLC.
You choose your first mastery at level 2 and your second at level 10. Each mastery has a mastery bar (points here raise base attributes and unlock skill tiers) and a skill tree.
| Mastery | Identity | Signature skills |
|---|---|---|
| Soldier | Tanky physical/bleed melee, shields | Blitz, Forcewave, Cadence, Blade Barrier, Military Conditioning |
| Demolitionist | Fire and lightning, ranged/grenades | Fire Strike, Grenado, Canister Bomb, Thermite Mine, Blackwater Cocktail |
| Occultist | Chaos, vitality, poison, pets, curses | Doom Bolt, Blood of Dreeg, Curse of Frailty, Summon Familiar, Summon Hellhound |
| Nightblade | Dual-wield, pierce, cold, poison | Amarasta's Blade Burst, Shadow Strike, Ring of Steel, Phantasmal Blades, Blade Spirit |
| Arcanist | Aether, fire, cold spellcasting | Panetti's Replicating Missile, Trozan's Sky Shard, Olexra's Flash Freeze, Albrecht's Aether Ray, Devastation |
| Shaman | Lightning, physical, bleed, pets, two-handers | Savagery, Storm Totem, Grasping Vines, Summon Briarthorn, Wendigo Totem |
| Inquisitor (Ashes of Malmouth) | Ranged elemental, runes, seals | Word of Renewal, Inquisitor Seal, Storm Box of Elgoloth, Rune of Hagarrad |
| Necromancer (Ashes of Malmouth) | Vitality, cold, skeleton pets | Bone Harvest, Reaping Strike, Raise Skeletons, Summon Blight Fiend, Siphon Souls |
| Oathkeeper (Forgotten Gods) | Shields, retaliation, holy fire/physical | Aegis of Menhir, Summon Guardian of Empyrion, Vire's Might, Presence of Virtue |
| Berserker (Fangs of Asterkarn) | Frenzied melee with beast transformations | New in 2026; check GrimTools for current skills |
Classic well-known combinations: Commando (Soldier + Demolitionist), Witchblade (Soldier + Occultist), Blademaster (Soldier + Nightblade), Battlemage (Soldier + Arcanist), Warder (Soldier + Shaman), Conjurer (Occultist + Shaman), Druid (Arcanist + Shaman), Purifier (Demolitionist + Inquisitor), Cabalist (Occultist + Necromancer), Death Knight (Soldier + Necromancer), Warlord (Soldier + Oathkeeper).
Each level gives one attribute point for Physique, Cunning, or Spirit.
| Attribute | Gives | Who stacks it |
|---|---|---|
| Physique | Health, Defensive Ability, health regen | Almost everyone (the default dump stat) |
| Cunning | Offensive Ability; physical, pierce, bleed damage | Put in only what your gear requirements need |
| Spirit | Energy, energy regen, elemental and magical damage | Only for gear requirements |
The standard approach is to put only enough into Cunning or Spirit to equip your weapons and armor, and everything else into Physique. Offensive Ability (OA) and Defensive Ability (DA) decide hit and crit chance against enemies, so both matter a lot in the endgame.
| Difficulty | Resistance penalty | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Normal (optional Veteran) | None | Story and leveling |
| Elite | -25% | Unlocked by beating Normal |
| Ultimate | -50% | The real endgame; resistance capping is mandatory |
The cap is 80% by default. Watch Fire, Cold, Lightning, Poison/Acid, Pierce, Bleeding, Vitality, Aether, and Chaos. Also get Stun, Freeze, Petrify, and Trap resistance as you gear up. Components (slotted into gear) and faction augments are the easiest way to plug gaps.
Restore a Devotion Shrine (some need an offering or a guard wave) to get a Devotion point. Spend points on the constellation map. You unlock bigger constellations with affinity (Ascendant, Chaos, Eldritch, Order, Primordial), earned from the stars you already hold. Many constellations give a celestial power that you bind to a skill, such as Fire Strike or a pet attack, so it procs automatically.
Rules of thumb:
Reputation climbs from Neutral through Friendly, Respected, Honored, and Revered. Faction bounty boards in each hub give quick rep.
Common (white) → Magic (yellow) → Rare (green) → Epic (blue) → Legendary (purple), plus Monster Infrequents (MIs), which drop from specific monsters. Set pieces grant bonuses at 2+ pieces. Fangs of Asterkarn's Awakening and Ascension systems now let you upgrade many Epics too.
| Archetype | Why it's good |
|---|---|
| Pet Conjurer (Occultist + Shaman: Summon Familiar, Summon Hellhound, Summon Briarthorn) | Pets tank and deal the damage, so it works well for new players |
| Fire Strike Commando or Purifier | Fire Strike replaces your default attack, uses no energy, and ramps smoothly |
| Physical Warder (Soldier + Shaman with a two-hander: Savagery, Blitz, Wendigo Totem) | Tanky, with self-heal and a simple rotation |
| Death Knight (Soldier + Necromancer) | Durable melee. Bone Harvest and Reaping Strike clear packs well |
The base game runs across Acts 1–4, starting from Devil's Crossing. Ashes of Malmouth adds two chapters (Acts 5 and 6, Malmouth). Forgotten Gods adds Act 7 in the Korvan Basin. Fangs of Asterkarn adds the Asterkarn region in the west. Expansions are optional but carry most of the endgame masteries and gear. If you own them, play them in order on Normal.
Which expansions do I need? None to play the campaign, but Ashes of Malmouth adds Inquisitor, Necromancer, Acts 5–6, and the level cap of 100. Forgotten Gods adds Oathkeeper, Act 7, Shattered Realm, and Rune augments (mobility skills like Leap and Teleport for medals). Fangs of Asterkarn adds Berserker, Asterkarn, and Ascendant mode. Most endgame builds assume at least the first two.
Is Fangs of Asterkarn the last expansion? Yes. Crate describes it as the final expansion, with post-launch content (including two rogue-like dungeons) coming as free updates.
Can I turn off the Dread? After the launch controversy, Crate announced an optional, reversible altar setting that stops the Dread spawning in Ascendant mode unless you boost its spawn rate. Check the current patch notes for exactly where the toggle lives.
What's the best class for beginners? A pet Conjurer or a Fire Strike Commando/Purifier. Both are strong, simple, and forgiving.
What's the level cap? Ashes of Malmouth raised it to 100 (with a Devotion cap of 55). The best source for the current cap and skill caps is the GrimTools calculator, which tracks the live version.
Can I respec? Skills can be respecced at a Spirit Guide for iron. Attributes need a Tonic of Clarity. Devotion points can be refunded with Aether Crystals.
Is Veteran mode worth it? Only if Normal feels too easy. It adds tougher enemies and better loot, but it isn't needed for Elite or Ultimate.
