# Gray Zone Warfare: Beginner-to-Advanced Guide

A practical guide to MADFINGER Games' open-world tactical shooter Gray Zone Warfare (Early Access). It covers choosing a faction and server type, the task and contract loop, loadouts, medical and ballistics basics, moving around Lamang, and staying alive in PvE and PvEvP.

*Researched September 2026. Current as of Update 0.4 "Spearhead" (hotfix 0.4.7.4, September 15, 2026). Update 0.5, the game's move into Alpha, is announced for fall 2026. Live games change, so check the linked sources if something differs.*

> **Early Access note:** Gray Zone Warfare is still in Early Access. Major updates have come with **full progress wipes**. Update 0.4 (March 31, 2026) wiped everyone, and Update 0.5 is billed as a big expansion with a "new gameplay loop". Don't get too attached to your stash between majors.

## Quick Start

1. **Do the new onboarding.** Fresh accounts get a reworked onboarding area and tutorial (added in 0.4 and polished through 0.4.7.x). It doesn't appear on existing accounts, even after a character wipe.
2. **Choose PvE or PvEvP deliberately.** PvE servers are you (and your squad) against AI. PvEvP lets other players' factions fight you. New players should start on PvE to learn the map and AI.
3. **Tasks are your progression.** Since 0.4, tasks show on the map with approximate objective areas, and you can accept them straight from the map. Most are repeatable, except the Starter Town tasks. There are 250+ tasks in total after 0.4.
4. **Long-Term Contracts (LTCs)** are a separate activity: search for items, investigate locations, or eliminate targets. Since 0.4.5.0 a squad leader can share most tasks with the squad, but LTCs, boss kills, Starter Town tasks, and chameleon tasks can't be shared.
5. **Bring only what you can afford to lose,** especially on PvEvP. Early on, cheap kits and vendor gear are fine.
6. **Take medical kit seriously.** Bleeds, fractures, and pain will kill you more often than the first bullet.
7. **Use the helicopter.** Fly from base to landing zones (LZs) near your objective instead of walking across the island.
8. **Listen more than you look.** Lamang's jungle hides AI well. Sound and suppression give most contacts away.
9. **Play with a squad** if you can. Revives matter a lot since 0.4.5 added the coma system.

## The Setting and the Factions

The game takes place on **Lamang**, a fictional Southeast Asian island sealed off after a mysterious event centered on **Ground Zero**. You play a private military contractor (PMC) for one of three factions:

| Faction | Notes |
|---|---|
| Lamang Recovery Initiative (LRI) | One of the three launch PMCs |
| Mithras Security Systems (MSS) | One of the three launch PMCs |
| Crimson Shield International (CSI) | One of the three launch PMCs |

Faction choice decides your starting base and who's hostile on PvEvP servers. The factions play the same in terms of gear access, so pick based on friends or your preferred base location.

## Core Loop

1. **At base,** buy and assemble gear from vendors, accept tasks, and organize your stash.
2. **Take a helicopter** to a landing zone near your objective.
3. **Complete tasks and contracts,** loot, and fight AI (and players on PvEvP).
4. **Extract** by calling a helicopter back to an LZ, or walking to base.
5. **Sell loot,** turn in tasks, and raise vendor standing to unlock better stock.

### Vendors

Vendors give tasks and sell gear. Names you'll hear include **Handshake**, **Gunny**, **Banshee**, and more. Each specializes in a category (weapons, medical, gear, and so on) and unlocks better items as you complete their tasks and raise your standing.

### Economy

- Money comes from selling loot and completing tasks and contracts.
- **Vendors and the economy were reworked in 0.4** alongside progression, so higher-tier gear is gated behind task progress and vendor standing.
- **Mortar strikes** exist as a purchasable support option. A September 2026 security report confirmed about 40 accounts were suspended or wiped for abusing a helicopter-death duplication exploit to buy mortar strikes in bulk. The exploit is patched.

## Map Knowledge

Update 0.4 added **25+ new locations** and rebuilt existing areas, plus seven distinct enemy factions with their own equipment and bosses. Key places you'll hear about include:

- **Ban Pa** and **Savanpha Village** (early areas)
- **Tiger Bay** and **Tiger Bay Mall** (a dense urban area)
- **Midnight Sapphire Hotel** (a high-value, high-danger building)
- **Pha Lang Airfield**
- **Winchester COP**, **Hidden Dock**, **YBL-1**, and **UNLRA Headquarters**
- **Ground Zero** (the central mystery zone, to be expanded in 0.5)

Tips:

- Use the **community interactive map** (linked from the official site) for LZs, task locations, and loot spots.
- **Plan your route** from LZ to objective along cover. Avoid open rice paddies and roads in daylight.
- **Know your extraction LZ** before you leave. A long walk with a full backpack is how you lose a raid.

## Loadouts

### Weapons

- **Assault rifles and carbines** (AK and M4 families) are the backbone. **SMGs** suit close-quarters buildings, and **DMRs and bolt-actions** cover long sightlines.
- **Ammunition matters more than the gun.** Penetration determines whether you beat armor. Buy the best ammo you can afford for your caliber.
- **Weapon modding** (380+ parts added in 0.4) lets you trade recoil, ergonomics, and weight. Start with a good optic, a muzzle device, and a comfortable stock.

### Armor and gear

- **Body armor and helmets** have protection levels and durability. Good ammo still goes through low-tier armor.
- **Plate carriers and rigs** hold magazines and meds. A rig with fast access to mags and a tourniquet is worth more than extra backpack space.
- **Weight** affects stamina and movement. Heavy kits make you slow and loud.
- **Night vision and lights** matter in the dark. Nights on Lamang are genuinely dark.

## Health and Medical

Gray Zone Warfare simulates injuries per body area.

- **Bleeding:** Tourniquets for heavy bleeds on limbs, bandages and hemostatics for others. Treat bleeds first.
- **Fractures:** Splints. A fractured leg slows you. A fractured arm ruins your aim.
- **Pain:** Painkillers let you keep functioning. They don't heal the injury.
- **Coma (since 0.4.5.0, June 2026):** Critically injured players fall into a coma instead of dying outright. Squadmates can revive you, and the coma duration was extended to **eight minutes**.
- **Carry a small first-aid kit** in your rig (tourniquet, bandages, painkillers, splint) and a larger one in your backpack.

## Combat Tips

- **Ballistics are realistic.** Armor class versus ammo penetration decides most fights, so aim for unarmored zones when you can. 0.4 also reworked AI so one-shot kills from AI are much rarer than before.
- **Fight at the range your gun and optic suit.**
- **Use cover and change positions.** AI will flank and suppress. Staying in one window gets you killed.
- **Clear buildings slowly.** Pie corners, check stairs, and listen for footsteps.
- **Manage your stamina.** Arriving at a fight out of breath means shaky aim.
- **On PvEvP, gunshots draw players.** After a loud fight, reposition, heal, and loot quickly or leave.

## PvE vs PvEvP

| | PvE | PvEvP |
|---|---|---|
| Threats | AI only | AI plus enemy-faction players |
| Pace | Methodical | Tense. Third parties are common |
| Best for | Learning, tasks, relaxed squads | Veteran squads who want risk |
| Loot risk | Lower | High. Other players can take your gear |

On PvEvP, friendly players from your own faction aren't your enemies. Check squad and faction markers before shooting.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Overgearing early.** Expensive kits die the same way cheap ones do while you're still learning.
- **Ignoring task maps.** Objectives are shown approximately since 0.4. Use them.
- **Walking across the whole island.** Helicopters save time and risk.
- **No tourniquet.** Heavy bleeds kill fast.
- **Fighting with bad ammo.** Upgrade ammo before upgrading the gun.
- **Loud movement.** Sprinting through the jungle alerts every AI patrol.
- **Getting attached before a wipe.** Enjoy the progression, but expect resets at major updates in Early Access.

## Advanced Tips

- **Repeatable tasks and contracts** are the most efficient money and standing farm. Stack tasks in the same area before you fly out, and use squad task sharing (0.4.5.0) so everyone progresses on the same run. Shared tasks with a survival condition fail if any member dies.
- **PvEvP outposts:** Since 0.4.5.0, a recaptured COP has a 30-minute cooldown and conflict zones are larger (400 m diameter), so respawn-and-refight cycles at outposts are slower.
- **Night raids** with night vision and suppressors let you pick fights on your terms.
- **Squad roles:** A point man with an SMG or shotgun, a DMR overwatch, and a medic-stacked support player make a strong trio.
- **Revive discipline:** With the eight-minute coma timer, kill the threat first, then revive.
- **Report exploits and cheaters.** MADFINGER has started publishing enforcement reports and promises more transparency on anti-cheat.
- **Watch for 0.5 news.** MADFINGER showed early 0.5 previews at Gamescom 2026 and the FPS Games Show. Expect major changes to the loop, new loot opportunities, and more of Ground Zero's story.

## FAQ

**Is Gray Zone Warfare PvP?**
Both. You choose PvE (AI only) or PvEvP (AI plus enemy players) servers.

**Will there be a wipe?**
Major updates have included full progress wipes (0.4 did). Expect 0.5 to be a significant milestone, and check official announcements for wipe details.

**When is Update 0.5?**
MADFINGER says Gray Zone Warfare enters Alpha "this fall" (2026) with Update 0.5. No exact date was given as of late September 2026.

**Which edition should I buy?**
The base game is enough to play everything. Higher editions (Tactical, Elite, Supporter) add starting gear, resources, and stash benefits, and Supporter adds morale patches. They're support purchases, not requirements.

**Can I play solo?**
Yes. Tasks and Long-Term Contracts can be done solo. Solo is harder, especially without anyone to revive you from a coma.

**How many people own it?**
MADFINGER reported 1.7 million copies sold as of September 2026.
