Geometry Dash: Complete Guide

Everything from beating Stereo Madness to your first demon: controls, game modes, the official levels, coins and unlocks, practice technique, online levels, and what update 2.208 changed.

Researched September 2026 — current as of update 2.2081 (January 2026); update 2.209 has been teased with a trailer (September 2026) but was not yet out at time of writing. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Practice mode is how you learn levels. It places checkpoints so you can drill hard sections. Normal mode only counts full runs from 0%.
  2. Learn the rhythm, not just the obstacles. Most official levels are timed to the music, so listen and jump on the beat.
  3. Get the secret coins. Each official level has 3, and they unlock the three official demons plus many icons.
  4. Don't jump straight to Clubstep. Work through the main levels in order, since each game mode is introduced gradually.
  5. Online levels are most of the game. Millions of user levels, plus Daily, Weekly, Gauntlets, Map Packs and Lists.
  6. Turn on Click Between Steps (2.208). It registers inputs more precisely between physics steps, and it's now an official option.
  7. Keep frame rate high and stable. Check the graphics options (V-Sync, FPS) and match your monitor's refresh rate where possible. Low or unstable FPS makes timing inconsistent.
  8. Avoid unofficial hacks on rated levels if you care about leaderboards. Cheats can get you removed from the leaderboards.

Controls

Action Default input
Jump / fly / flip (classic levels) Space, Up arrow, W, or left mouse
Move left/right (platformer) A/D or Left/Right arrows
Pause Esc
Place checkpoint (practice) Z
Remove last checkpoint (practice) X
Player 2 (dual, 2-player levels) Separate keys, see Settings

Keys can be changed in the keybinds menu. Many experienced players move jump off Space to a key they can press faster.

Game Modes

Mode How it controls Tip
Cube Jump on press; hold to keep jumping Learn when a held press auto-jumps
Ship Hold to rise, release to fall Tap gently. Most ship crashes come from over-holding
Ball Press to flip gravity Plan which surface you'll land on
UFO Each press is a small flap Tap rhythm; don't spam
Wave Hold to go up diagonally, release to go down Straight-fly corridors test consistency; mini wave is steeper
Robot Hold for a longer jump The jump height depends on hold length
Spider Press to teleport instantly to the opposite surface Reaction timing, not physics
Swing (2.2) Press flips gravity while gliding Like a floaty ball-ship hybrid

Portals switch mode, gravity, size (mini), speed (half, normal, 2x, 3x, 4x), dual mode and mirror. Orbs (yellow, pink, red, blue, green, black, dash) need a press while touching. Pads trigger on contact.

The Official Levels

The full game has 22 main levels plus The Tower platformer levels added in 2.2.

Unlocking the demons: Clubstep, Theory of Everything 2 and Deadlocked are locked behind secret coin totals (10, 20 and 30 coins). Collect coins as you go.

Suggested order after the basics: Get comfortable up to Theory of Everything, then do Electrodynamix, Hexagon Force (dual sections) and Blast Processing. Deadlocked is widely considered the hardest of the three official demons; opinions differ on whether Clubstep or Theory of Everything 2 is easier, so try both.

The Tower (2.2): Four platformer levels (The Tower, The Sewers, The Cellar and The Secret Hollow) where you move freely instead of auto-scrolling. They have keys and hidden paths, so explore.

Difficulty Ladder for Online Levels

User levels are rated Auto, Easy, Normal, Hard, Harder, Insane, then Demon, split into Easy, Medium, Hard, Insane and Extreme Demon. Platformer levels are rated too, and star ratings give Stars (classic) or Moons (platformer).

A sensible path to your first demon:

  1. Beat all non-demon official levels, then Clubstep.
  2. Play Insane rated user levels until they feel routine.
  3. Pick a well-known Easy Demon. Community lists (such as the Geometry Dash Demon Ladder, GDDL) rank demons more precisely than the in-game faces.
  4. Practice-mode it to 100%, then do runs from 0% while practicing your worst section from a checkpoint.
