Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach: Survival Guide & Walkthrough Tips
How to survive a night in Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex as Gregory: the stealth and tool systems, how to handle each hunter, how the night and its endings are structured, collectibles, and fixes for common PC problems.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the August 23, 2023 update (the last content/bug-fix patch) and the free Ruin DLC released July 25, 2023. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Freddy is your safe room on legs. Glamrock Freddy can carry Gregory in his chest hatch. Inside, enemies won't find you, and you can move around the Pizzaplex through Freddy's eyes. Freddy's battery drains while you ride, so recharge him at Freddy's recharge stations.
- Check the cameras before every trip. The Faz-Watch gives you access to the Pizzaplex security cameras. Look at your route before you walk it; this is the single best habit in the game.
- Save at every Save Station you pass. The game only saves at stations (plus manual save slots, capped at 50). Losing 20 minutes of progress to a jumpscare is the most common frustration.
- Hide, don't run, when you can. Hiding spots let a hunter pass by. Sprinting drains stamina and makes noise; break line of sight first, then hide.
- Use distractions. Knocking over paint cans, toys, and other objects draws enemies to that spot. Make noise on one side, sneak out the other.
- Pick up everything. Security badges open new areas, message bags hold story notes, and Party Passes and gifts give useful items. The Pizzaplex is built around slowly unlocking access.
- Collect Freddy's upgrades. Taking parts from the other Glamrock animatronics (Chica's voice box, Monty's claws, Roxy's eyes) upgrades Freddy and opens new paths.
- Learn the S.T.A.F.F. bots. Security bots with flashlights will alert Vanessa if they spot you. Their patrol routes are predictable; time your moves.
- Time is story-driven, not real-time. The in-game clock moves from 12 AM to 6 AM as you complete missions, not as the minutes pass. Take your time.
The Hunters
| Hunter |
How it behaves |
How to deal with it |
| Glamrock Chica |
Patrols, investigates noises, often near food and kitchens |
Distract with noise; avoid her patrol path; she is tied to trash and food areas |
| Roxanne Wolf (Roxy) |
Fast, aggressive, sharp at spotting you |
Break line of sight, use tight corridors and hiding spots |
| Montgomery Gator (Monty) |
Big, loud, lunges and jumps |
Keep distance, use obstacles; his area is Monty Golf |
| Vanessa |
The security guard; hunts with a flashlight after S.T.A.F.F. bots alert her |
Stay out of the flashlight cone, avoid bots |
| Vanny |
A masked figure who appears at story beats |
Follow the story prompts; avoid her in the chase sequences |
| S.T.A.F.F. bots |
Patrol with flashlights, call Vanessa |
Watch their light, move behind them |
| Daycare Attendant |
Guards the Superstar Daycare; changes behavior when the lights go out |
Keep the lights on or move fast between light sources in the dark |
| Endos |
Bare endoskeletons that appear in later, darker areas |
Scout with cameras, move carefully, and don't assume they're props |
| Map Bot |
Harmless bot offering you a map |
Talk to it; the map helps navigation |
| Tool |
Use |
| Faz-Watch |
Security cameras, missions, time, and Freddy communication |
| Flashlight |
Light in dark areas; recharge it at stations (the "Let There Be Light" mission introduces it) |
| Fazerblaster |
Unlimited-ammo laser pistol that briefly stuns S.T.A.F.F. bots and animatronics; it has a cooldown |
| Faz-Cam |
A camera flash that stuns nearby enemies |
| Security badges |
Grant access to locked areas |
The Fazerblaster and Faz-Cam were rebalanced in the February 2022 patch (shorter stun lengths, adjusted cooldowns), so don't treat them as "kill buttons" — use them to escape, not to fight.
The Pizzaplex: Key Areas
The Pizzaplex is a hub with themed attractions branching off the Main Atrium. Areas you'll visit include:
- Main Atrium and Lobby — the hub; lots of hiding spots in the Lobby after patches.
- Rockstar Row — Freddy's and the Glamrocks' dressing rooms.
- Superstar Daycare — the Daycare Attendant's domain; you restore power with generators (wires are color-coded after a patch).
- Kitchen — Chica's territory, with the trash compactor.
- West Arcade — arcades and the Princess Quest machines.
- Fazer Blast — laser tag arena. Captured flags turn blue for you, green for the enemy.
- Monty Golf — Monty's minigolf area, and the Mazercise vents nearby.
- Roxy Raceway — racing attraction with Roxy's patrols.
- Bonnie Bowl — the bowling alley.
- Parts and Service — where Freddy is repaired and upgrades are installed.
- Utility tunnels and sewers — late-game access routes.
- Lost and Found — a notable area for later story events.
- El Chips and Prize Counter — side areas with collectibles.
Structure of the Night
The story runs as a chain of missions, each advancing the clock. Missions named in official patch notes include "Let There Be Light" (flashlight), "Thrill Seeker" (Mazercise), "Dumpster Diving" (figuring out how to decommission Chica), "Monty Mystery Mix", and "Showtime". The general shape:
- 12 AM to early hours — Freddy hides you, you learn cameras, hiding, and distraction. You gain the Fazerblaster and flashlight.
- Gathering upgrades — each Glamrock is dealt with in a set-piece, and you take their part for Freddy. Chica's voice box opens gates marked "No Chica"; Monty's claws break through Monty-branded barriers; Roxy's eyes improve Freddy's sight.
- Late night — the Daycare, deeper utility areas, and Vanny's story beats.
- 6 AM choice — the doors open. You can leave for a quick ending, or keep playing ("Overtime") to pursue harder, more complete endings. A save station exists on the 2nd floor of the Atrium that can only be used in Overtime.
Endings
There are six endings. Broadly:
- Quick endings come from leaving at 6 AM or taking the easy way out with Freddy.
- Overtime endings require staying past 6 AM and completing extra objectives with Freddy's upgrades; these lead to bigger confrontations.
- Burntrap / Afton ending — a boss fight deep below the Pizzaplex revealing a buried older pizzeria. The February 2022 patch rebalanced this fight to be fairer.
- Princess Quest ending — reached by completing all three Princess Quest arcade games. It's widely regarded as the "good" ending: Gregory learns Vanessa and Vanny are the same person, saves her after a final confrontation in Fazer Blast, and leaves with her and Freddy at sunrise.
Because endings branch late, keep a manual save from just before 6 AM so you can go back and chase each one.
Collectibles
- Message bags — story and lore notes.
- Retro CDs — music collectibles. Two were moved in a December 2021 patch away from El Chips and the Prize Counter because Freddy access was unreliable there.
- Security badges — access progression; some are optional.
- Party Passes and gifts — useful items and upgrades.
- Plushies and other collectibles — for completionists.
The achievement list (29 total) includes "TROPHY TIME" for earning everything else, plus endings, collectibles, and minigame completions like "LAZER ACE" and "UNDER PAR." A February 2022 patch fixed TROPHY TIME not unlocking.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not saving. Save Stations are your only checkpoints; use them every time.
- Walking into rooms blind. Check cameras first. The game even added camera posters and instruction cards to push this.
- Spamming the Fazerblaster. It has a cooldown and short stuns. It's an escape tool.
- Letting Freddy's battery hit zero. Recharge him when you can; a dead Freddy can't hide you.
- Ignoring Map Bot. Take the map. Getting lost in the Pizzaplex costs more time than any enemy.
- Running in the Daycare's dark phase. Plan your route between lit areas.
- Deleting saves carelessly. Old bugs around deleting and continuing were fixed in 2023, but keep a backup slot before the 6 AM choice anyway.
Advanced Tips
- Distraction chains. Knock something over, hide, and let the enemy investigate; then move while it's facing the noise.
- Ride Freddy between hubs. Use Freddy to cross dangerous stretches rather than walking them, and hop out only where you need to interact.
- Learn patrol loops. Roxy's path in Roxy Raceway and Vanny's boss pathing were adjusted in the June 2022 patch — if a guide video seems off, it may predate that.
- Use the reticle setting. A reticle option exists in General Settings (base game only), which helps with arcades and aiming.
- Remap controls. Since June 2022, movement and interaction (for example, F on keyboard) can be remapped.
- DLSS and ray tracing are separate toggles in the video menu. If performance tanks, turn ray tracing off first.
Ruin DLC
Ruin is a free story DLC released July 25, 2023 on PC (and PS4/PS5; Xbox followed in April 2024 and Switch in December 2024). You play Cassie, who enters the ruined Pizzaplex to rescue a trapped Gregory, and encounter a new threat called the Mimic. Ruin is a more linear, puzzle-heavy experience than the base game. If the game crashes on boot after Ruin's release, remove any mods and verify the game files through Steam.
PC Troubleshooting
- Black screens during cutscenes/jumpscares: caused by a corrupted settings file. Uninstall mods, show hidden files, go to
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\fnaf9\Saved\SaveGames, and delete PlayerSettingsSlot.sav. This resets settings only; saves are unaffected.
- Crash on boot: remove mods, then verify game files.
- Download size: reduced to roughly 41 GB (65 GB uncompressed) in April 2022.
FAQ
How long is Security Breach?
A first playthrough to a quick ending takes many hours; chasing all six endings and collectibles takes considerably longer.
How do I save?
Use Save Stations around the Pizzaplex. There's a 50-slot limit on manual saves.
Which ending is the true ending?
The Princess Quest ending (complete all three Princess Quest arcades) is widely considered the good ending; the Burntrap/Afton ending is the big boss finale.
Is Ruin free?
Yes, it was released as a free DLC on July 25, 2023.
Why can't I get into an area?
You're likely missing a security badge or a Freddy upgrade. Check your current mission on the Faz-Watch.
How do I get past the Daycare Attendant?
