Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age: Complete Guide

A practical guide to FFXII The Zodiac Age on PC: picking two jobs per character, writing gambits that win fights for you, license boards, Espers, hunts and endgame, Trial Mode, missables, and PC settings fixes.

Researched September 2026 — current as of PC patch 1.0.4.0 (April 2020, added job reset and three gambit sets). Check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Jobs are permanent choices, unless you use the job reset. Patch 1.0.4.0 added a job reset function, so experimenting is less scary than on the original PS4 release.
  2. Each character gets two jobs. You pick the first early on and unlock the second after defeating the first Esper, Belias.
  3. Gambits do most of the fighting. Set healing and revive gambits on everyone as soon as you can.
  4. Use speed mode. You can speed the game up to 2x or 4x (switchable at any time) for travel and grinding. Turn it off for boss fights.
  5. Buy new magicks and technicks as you find shops. Buying a spell doesn't make it usable; you still need its license.
  6. Sell loot. Loot sales unlock Bazaar goods, some of which are the best gear in their tier.
  7. Take hunts early. The Clan Centurio hunt board (run by Montblanc) gives gil, items, and Clan Points.
  8. Build chains. Killing the same enemy type repeatedly builds a chain and improves drops.
  9. Save often at save crystals. Crystals also restore HP and MP.
  10. Some areas are one-time only. Explore thoroughly when a story area feels "special."

The Zodiac Job System

Each character picks two of twelve jobs, each with its own license board. A character can't take the same job twice, but several characters can share a job.

Job Main weapon type Role
White Mage Rods Healing, White Magick
Black Mage Staves Offensive Black Magick
Time Battlemage Crossbows Time Magick (Haste, Slow, and more), heavy armor
Red Battlemage Maces Mixed white and black magick, support; can use shields
Knight Swords Heavy armor and shields; frontline tank
Monk Poles Frontline damage, self-sustaining technicks
Machinist Guns Ranged damage that ignores defense
Uhlan Spears Heavy armor, frontline damage
Foebreaker Axes and hammers Breaking enemy stats (defense, magick resistance)
Archer Bows Ranged physical damage
Shikari Daggers Fast light-armor fighter, stealing
Bushi Katanas High-damage melee

Some jobs also get secondary weapon types on their boards; the table lists each job's signature weapon. Check the board itself before buying gear.

These are commonly recommended combinations, not the only good ones. Treat them as safe starting points:

Pairing Why it works
Knight + White Mage Durable healer-tank; great for a beginner's Basch or Ashe
Machinist + Time Battlemage Guns plus Haste and Time Magick support
Uhlan + Shikari Two strong weapon trees with complementary armor
Black Mage + Monk Offensive caster with a sturdier body and utility technicks
Foebreaker + Machinist Debuffs to soften bosses, plus reliable ranged damage
Archer + Uhlan Ranged damage with heavy armor
Red Battlemage + Monk Flexible support with self-sufficiency
Bushi + Uhlan Pure frontline damage

Party balance rule of thumb: make sure at least two characters can cast healing magick and at least one can use Time Magick for Haste. Everything else is flexible.

Who should take which job?

Characters don't have stat bonuses tied to jobs in a way that locks you in, so pick what you like. Many players give casters to Penelo, Fran, and Ashe and frontline roles to Basch, Vaan, and Balthier, but any split works.

Tips:

Gambits: Let the AI Fight for You

Gambits are "if this, then that" rules. The game checks them from top to bottom and does the first one that applies.

A starter set

Healer:

  1. Ally: status = KO → Raise (or Phoenix Down)
  2. Ally: HP below 50% → Cura (or Cure)
  3. Ally: any status ailment → matching cure (Esuna, Remedy, etc.)
  4. Foe: party leader's target → Attack

Fighter:

  1. Ally: status = KO → Phoenix Down
  2. Self: HP below 30% → Potion (or Hi-Potion)
  3. Foe: party leader's target → Attack

Time Battlemage support:

  1. Ally: any without Haste → Haste
  2. Ally: HP below 50% → Cura
  3. Foe: party leader's target → Attack

Gambit tips

Espers and Quickenings

Espers are summons. In The Zodiac Age, each Esper can be licensed by only one character, so think about who gets which.

The thirteen Espers: Belias, Mateus, Adrammelech, Zalera, Cúchulainn, Shemhazai, Hashmal, Famfrit, Zeromus, Exodus, Chaos, Ultima, and Zodiark. Some come from the story; the rest are optional superbosses. Obtaining every Esper earns "High Summoner."

Quickenings are powerful special attacks licensed on the boards. Chaining them together into Concurrences deals huge damage. Performing every Concurrence is the "Mist Walker" achievement.

Hunts and Clan Centurio

Notable endgame marks and bosses (from the achievement list): Deathgaze, Gilgamesh, Fafnir, the Behemoth King, the Hell Wyrm, Carrot, Ultima, Zodiark, and Yiazmat (the final and longest hunt).
