FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster: Complete Guide

A practical guide to both games in the PC collection: the systems that matter in FFX (Sphere Grid, Overdrives, Celestial Weapons, missables) and FFX-2 (dresspheres, Garment Grids, story completion), plus PC-specific tips.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the last PC patch (March 2019). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Pick the Expert Sphere Grid if you want freedom. At the start of FFX you choose Standard or Expert. Expert puts every character in a tighter starting pocket but lets them branch far earlier, which makes custom builds easier. Standard is fine for a relaxed first playthrough.
  2. Swap party members constantly. In FFX, a character only earns AP if they act in a battle. Swap someone in for one action and they get a share. This is the single biggest levelling habit.
  3. Grab every Al Bhed Primer. There are 26 volumes. They translate Al Bhed dialogue, and some can be permanently missed if you leave an area. Rule of thumb: explore every corner before advancing the story.
  4. Do the Cloister of Trials treasures. Each temple hides a Destruction Sphere treasure. Collecting all of them is required for an optional aeon later, and at least one (Bevelle) is only available during the story.
  5. Don't skip the Jecht Shot on the boat to Luca. The Jecht Shot minigame on the ship is a one-time opportunity.
  6. Use the PC boosters if you want. The PC version has 5 game boosters, including high speed and no encounters. High speed makes grinding and endgame farming dramatically faster.
  7. FFX-2 is very different. It's a fast, job-swapping ATB game with a chaptered structure and a completion percentage. Play it after FFX; the story assumes you've seen FFX's ending.
  8. Save at every save sphere. The PC version adds auto-save, but manual saves are still how you protect missable content.

FINAL FANTASY X: Core Systems

Conditional Turn-Based (CTB) combat

FFX battles are strictly turn-based. The turn order list on the right shows who acts next, and it updates as you hover over different commands. Use this:

Character roles

Character Early role Weapon specialty
Tidus Speed, Haste, Cheer, Delay Good against fast enemies
Yuna White Magic and aeons Summoner
Wakka Ranged attacks Hits flying enemies
Lulu Black Magic Hits flans and elemental enemies
Kimahri Flexible; Lancet steals Ronso Rages Adapts to any grid path
Auron Armor-breaking heavy hits Pierces armored enemies
Rikku Steal, Use, item Mix Hits mechanical enemies fast

The golden early-game rule: fliers to Wakka, armored to Auron, elemental/flan to Lulu, fast things to Tidus.

The Sphere Grid

Overdrives

Each character has an Overdrive gauge. Their Overdrive commands are:

Character Overdrive How it grows
Tidus Swordplay Learns new moves as he uses Overdrives
Auron Bushido Unlocked by collecting Jecht Spheres
Wakka Slots Reels won from optional content
Lulu Fury Chain spells with rapid stick rotation
Kimahri Ronso Rage Learned via Lancet on specific enemies
Rikku Mix Combine two items; experiment
Yuna Grand Summon Summons an aeon with a full gauge

Overdrive Modes control how the gauge fills. The default (Stoic) fills when you take damage. Change it in the menu once other modes unlock; filling from actions that happen every battle is much faster.

Aeons

Aeons are Yuna's summons. They take hits instead of the party and have their own Overdrives. Many boss fights are easier if you open with an aeon to absorb big attacks. Optional aeons include Yojimbo (Cavern of the Stolen Fayth, paid by gil), Anima (requires all Destruction Sphere treasures, then a visit to Baaj Temple), and the Magus Sisters (requires two key items found late in the game).

FFX Missables and One-Time Events

FFX Endgame: Celestial Weapons

Each character has an ultimate weapon that needs a Crest and a Sigil to fully power up, plus the Celestial Mirror (found by restoring a mirror at Macalania Woods).

Character Celestial Weapon Known hard requirement
Tidus Caladbolg Sun Sigil from the Calm Lands chocobo race
Yuna Nirvana Moon Sigil from defeating Belgemine's aeons at Remiem Temple
Auron Masamune Mars Sigil from Monster Arena captures
Wakka World Champion Jupiter Sigil from Blitzball
Lulu Onion Knight Venus Sigil from dodging lightning in the Thunder Plains
Kimahri Spirit Lance Minigame-based Sigil
Rikku Godhand Minigame-based Sigil

The Sigils are the grind. The chocobo race (Tidus) and lightning dodging (Lulu, 200 consecutive dodges) are the most notorious. Tips:

Monster Arena and superbosses

The Monster Arena in the Calm Lands lets you capture fiends with special weapons and unlock arena-created monsters. It's also where you build the gear for the true endgame. The International content adds the Dark Aeons, corrupted versions of Yuna's aeons that appear around the world after a certain story point, and the final hidden boss Penance. These are far beyond story-level stats; they expect maxed characters and customised gear.

Endgame build priorities

FINAL FANTASY X-2: Core Systems

FFX-2 is set two years after FFX. Yuna, Rikku and Paine are sphere hunters working out of the airship Celsius.

Active Time Battle and chaining

Combat is real-time ATB. Attacks that land close together form chains, increasing damage. Three characters attacking in quick succession is how you shred bosses.

Dresspheres and Garment Grids

Early dressphere Use
Gunner Fast, reliable damage (Yuna's default)
Thief Steal and fast turns (Rikku's default)
Warrior Physical damage and breaks (Paine's default)
White Mage Healing
Black Mage Elemental damage
Songstress Support and debuffs

Story Completion and chapters

FFX-2 is divided into five chapters. Each chapter opens missions across Spira; many scenes and hot spots only exist in one chapter. Your story completion percentage rises with every scene, minigame and mission you see. Reaching 100 percent unlocks a secret ending scene; the regular good ending also depends on specific events and choices, so follow a guide if you want it. New Game Plus carries your items and completion percentage over.

Practical advice: don't chase 100 percent blind on your first run. Many points are tied to small conversations in specific chapters. Use a chapter-by-chapter checklist from a completion guide, or accept a partial run and use New Game Plus.

FAQ

Which game should I play first? FFX. FFX-2 is a direct sequel and starts two years after FFX's ending.

Standard or Expert Sphere Grid? Expert for customisation and a slightly stronger late game. Standard is gentler and closer to the original release. Both are viable for the whole game.

What are the PC boosters? Five toggles available in both games, including high speed and no encounters. They can be switched on and off during play.

Is there anything permanently missable in FFX? Yes: the Jecht Shot minigame, some Al Bhed Primers, and the Destruction Sphere treasure in Bevelle (needed for Anima). Most other collectibles can be picked up with the airship later.

How do I get the perfect ending in FFX-2? Reach 100 percent story completion, which unlocks the secret ending. That requires seeing specific scenes and completing missions across all five chapters; New Game Plus keeps your percentage if you fall short.

Is Last Mission required? No. It's a standalone bonus dungeon launched from the main menu.

Is the game still being patched? No major gameplay updates since March 2019, when a patch was rolled back to fix an offline-play issue. It remains on sale on Steam.
