# FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster: Complete Guide

A practical guide to both games in the PC collection: the systems that matter in FFX (Sphere Grid, Overdrives, Celestial Weapons, missables) and FFX-2 (dresspheres, Garment Grids, story completion), plus PC-specific tips.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of the last PC patch (March 2019). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

## Quick Start

1. **Pick the Expert Sphere Grid if you want freedom.** At the start of FFX you choose Standard or Expert. Expert puts every character in a tighter starting pocket but lets them branch far earlier, which makes custom builds easier. Standard is fine for a relaxed first playthrough.
2. **Swap party members constantly.** In FFX, a character only earns AP if they act in a battle. Swap someone in for one action and they get a share. This is the single biggest levelling habit.
3. **Grab every Al Bhed Primer.** There are 26 volumes. They translate Al Bhed dialogue, and some can be permanently missed if you leave an area. Rule of thumb: explore every corner before advancing the story.
4. **Do the Cloister of Trials treasures.** Each temple hides a Destruction Sphere treasure. Collecting all of them is required for an optional aeon later, and at least one (Bevelle) is only available during the story.
5. **Don't skip the Jecht Shot on the boat to Luca.** The Jecht Shot minigame on the ship is a one-time opportunity.
6. **Use the PC boosters if you want.** The PC version has 5 game boosters, including high speed and no encounters. High speed makes grinding and endgame farming dramatically faster.
7. **FFX-2 is very different.** It's a fast, job-swapping ATB game with a chaptered structure and a completion percentage. Play it after FFX; the story assumes you've seen FFX's ending.
8. **Save at every save sphere.** The PC version adds auto-save, but manual saves are still how you protect missable content.

## What's Included

The remaster is built on the International versions of both games, which were previously only released in Japan and Europe.

| Game / extra | Notes |
| --- | --- |
| FINAL FANTASY X | Includes the Expert Sphere Grid and the International-only superbosses (the Dark Aeons and Penance) |
| FINAL FANTASY X-2 | Includes extra dresspheres, the Creature Creator system and new minigames |
| Last Mission | A grid-based, roguelike-style bonus dungeon set after X-2 |
| Eternal Calm | A short movie that bridges the two games |
| FINAL FANTASY X: Will | An audio drama made for the remaster |

**PC extras:** 4K support, remastered/rearranged soundtrack (sixty FFX tracks were rearranged; X-2's music is unchanged), FMV skip, auto-save, volume controls, and 5 game boosters including high speed and no-encounter modes.

## FINAL FANTASY X: Core Systems

### Conditional Turn-Based (CTB) combat

FFX battles are strictly turn-based. The turn order list on the right shows who acts next, and it updates as you hover over different commands. Use this:

- **Haste** gives more turns; **Slow** takes them away from enemies. Both are very strong.
- **Delay Attack and Delay Buster** (Sphere Grid skills) push an enemy's next turn back.
- **Swapping characters is free** and doesn't cost a turn. If Kimahri's turn comes up and you need Yuna, swap and act immediately.

### Character roles

| Character | Early role | Weapon specialty |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tidus | Speed, Haste, Cheer, Delay | Good against fast enemies |
| Yuna | White Magic and aeons | Summoner |
| Wakka | Ranged attacks | Hits flying enemies |
| Lulu | Black Magic | Hits flans and elemental enemies |
| Kimahri | Flexible; Lancet steals Ronso Rages | Adapts to any grid path |
| Auron | Armor-breaking heavy hits | Pierces armored enemies |
| Rikku | Steal, Use, item Mix | Hits mechanical enemies fast |

The golden early-game rule: **fliers to Wakka, armored to Auron, elemental/flan to Lulu, fast things to Tidus.**

### The Sphere Grid

- Characters gain **S.Lv** from AP. Each S.Lv lets them move one node.
- Use **Power, Mana, Speed and Ability Spheres** to activate nodes (stats and abilities).
- Gated lock nodes need **Key Spheres** (Lv. 1 to Lv. 4). Later you'll find teleport-type spheres that let a character jump to another location on the grid.
- Once a character reaches the end of their own section, walk them into another character's path. That's how Tidus learns White Magic or Lulu picks up Haste.

### Overdrives

Each character has an Overdrive gauge. Their Overdrive commands are:

| Character | Overdrive | How it grows |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tidus | Swordplay | Learns new moves as he uses Overdrives |
| Auron | Bushido | Unlocked by collecting Jecht Spheres |
| Wakka | Slots | Reels won from optional content |
| Lulu | Fury | Chain spells with rapid stick rotation |
| Kimahri | Ronso Rage | Learned via Lancet on specific enemies |
| Rikku | Mix | Combine two items; experiment |
| Yuna | Grand Summon | Summons an aeon with a full gauge |

**Overdrive Modes** control how the gauge fills. The default (Stoic) fills when you take damage. Change it in the menu once other modes unlock; filling from actions that happen every battle is much faster.

### Aeons

Aeons are Yuna's summons. They take hits instead of the party and have their own Overdrives. Many boss fights are easier if you open with an aeon to absorb big attacks. Optional aeons include **Yojimbo** (Cavern of the Stolen Fayth, paid by gil), **Anima** (requires all Destruction Sphere treasures, then a visit to Baaj Temple), and **the Magus Sisters** (requires two key items found late in the game).

## FFX Missables and One-Time Events

- **Jecht Shot** on the ship to Luca.
- **Al Bhed Primers**, especially those in Home and areas you can't return to during the late story. Pick up every Primer as soon as you see it.
- **Destruction Sphere treasures** in every Cloister of Trials. The Bevelle one is tied to the story visit.
- **Luca Blitzball tournament** plays out during the story; later Blitzball is optional.
- **Jecht Spheres** for Auron's Overdrives are spread across the world; most can be collected later with the airship.

## FFX Endgame: Celestial Weapons

Each character has an ultimate weapon that needs a Crest and a Sigil to fully power up, plus the Celestial Mirror (found by restoring a mirror at Macalania Woods).

| Character | Celestial Weapon | Known hard requirement |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tidus | Caladbolg | Sun Sigil from the Calm Lands chocobo race |
| Yuna | Nirvana | Moon Sigil from defeating Belgemine's aeons at Remiem Temple |
| Auron | Masamune | Mars Sigil from Monster Arena captures |
| Wakka | World Champion | Jupiter Sigil from Blitzball |
| Lulu | Onion Knight | Venus Sigil from dodging lightning in the Thunder Plains |
| Kimahri | Spirit Lance | Minigame-based Sigil |
| Rikku | Godhand | Minigame-based Sigil |

The Sigils are the grind. The **chocobo race** (Tidus) and **lightning dodging** (Lulu, 200 consecutive dodges) are the most notorious. Tips:

- Lightning dodging: stand still in open ground, watch for the screen flash and press confirm immediately. Do it in short sessions with the no-encounter booster on so random battles don't break your concentration.
- Chocobo race: learn the course, grab balloons, dodge birds. It's pure practice; there's no stat that helps.

### Monster Arena and superbosses

The **Monster Arena** in the Calm Lands lets you capture fiends with special weapons and unlock arena-created monsters. It's also where you build the gear for the true endgame. The International content adds the **Dark Aeons**, corrupted versions of Yuna's aeons that appear around the world after a certain story point, and the final hidden boss **Penance**. These are far beyond story-level stats; they expect maxed characters and customised gear.

### Endgame build priorities

- **Break Damage Limit** on weapons lets hits go past 9,999.
- **Break HP Limit** on armor lets HP go past 9,999.
- **Auto-Haste, Auto-Protect/Shell, Ribbon** (status immunity) are the classic defensive picks.
- Push every character around the whole grid and use **Clear Spheres** plus stat spheres to max stats.

## FINAL FANTASY X-2: Core Systems

FFX-2 is set two years after FFX. Yuna, Rikku and Paine are sphere hunters working out of the airship Celsius.

### Active Time Battle and chaining

Combat is real-time ATB. Attacks that land close together form **chains**, increasing damage. Three characters attacking in quick succession is how you shred bosses.

### Dresspheres and Garment Grids

- **Dresspheres** are jobs. Swap them mid-battle through the equipped **Garment Grid**.
- Each Garment Grid has a set of slots and gates. Passing through a gate by changing dresspheres triggers a bonus, and some grids grant passive abilities.
- Every dressphere has its own ability list learned with AP. Job levels are kept per character.
- The International version adds the **Psychic** and **Festivalist** dresspheres.

| Early dressphere | Use |
| --- | --- |
| Gunner | Fast, reliable damage (Yuna's default) |
| Thief | Steal and fast turns (Rikku's default) |
| Warrior | Physical damage and breaks (Paine's default) |
| White Mage | Healing |
| Black Mage | Elemental damage |
| Songstress | Support and debuffs |

### Story Completion and chapters

FFX-2 is divided into five chapters. Each chapter opens missions across Spira; many scenes and hot spots only exist in one chapter. Your **story completion percentage** rises with every scene, minigame and mission you see. Reaching 100 percent unlocks a secret ending scene; the regular good ending also depends on specific events and choices, so follow a guide if you want it. New Game Plus carries your items and completion percentage over.

Practical advice: don't chase 100 percent blind on your first run. Many points are tied to small conversations in specific chapters. Use a chapter-by-chapter checklist from a completion guide, or accept a partial run and use New Game Plus.

### Creature Creator and Last Mission

- **Creature Creator** lets you capture fiends and some NPCs and train them to fight alongside the party.
- **Last Mission** is a separate, floor-by-floor dungeon with random encounters, playable from the main menu. It uses the X-2 cast and mechanics in a grid format.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Only fighting with three characters in FFX.** Benched characters get no AP. Swap everyone in.
- **Ignoring Overdrive Modes.** Leaving everyone on the default mode wastes huge amounts of Overdrive use.
- **Selling or ignoring stat spheres.** Keep them for the grid.
- **Skipping Kimahri's Lancet.** He only learns Ronso Rages by using Lancet on enemies that have them.
- **Leaving an area with Primers unchecked.** Some are permanent misses.
- **Attempting the Dark Aeons at story level.** They are tuned for fully developed characters.
- **Playing FFX-2 like a turn-based game.** It rewards fast inputs and chains, not careful waiting.
- **Skimming X-2 chapters.** Missing a single scene can keep you from 100 percent completion.

## Advanced Tips

- **Use high speed booster for grinding and sigil prep.** It shortens farming sessions dramatically in both games.
- **Turn off encounters for exploring and collecting,** then turn them back on for AP grinding.
- **Overkill enemies** for extra AP and better drops in FFX.
- **Delay Buster lock** on bosses: chaining Tidus/Auron delay attacks can keep some bosses from acting for several turns.
- **Customize** in FFX by using items to add abilities to empty equipment slots. Early on, adding Sensor or elemental protections makes tough fights much easier.
- **FFX-2 dressphere changes** heal status and trigger Garment Grid bonuses, so switching mid-battle is often better than using an item.
- **Save before every Sigil attempt** and before each Dark Aeon so a failed run costs minutes, not hours.

## FAQ

**Which game should I play first?**
FFX. FFX-2 is a direct sequel and starts two years after FFX's ending.

**Standard or Expert Sphere Grid?**
Expert for customisation and a slightly stronger late game. Standard is gentler and closer to the original release. Both are viable for the whole game.

**What are the PC boosters?**
Five toggles available in both games, including high speed and no encounters. They can be switched on and off during play.

**Is there anything permanently missable in FFX?**
Yes: the Jecht Shot minigame, some Al Bhed Primers, and the Destruction Sphere treasure in Bevelle (needed for Anima). Most other collectibles can be picked up with the airship later.

**How do I get the perfect ending in FFX-2?**
Reach 100 percent story completion, which unlocks the secret ending. That requires seeing specific scenes and completing missions across all five chapters; New Game Plus keeps your percentage if you fall short.

**Is Last Mission required?**
No. It's a standalone bonus dungeon launched from the main menu.

**Is the game still being patched?**
No major gameplay updates since March 2019, when a patch was rolled back to fix an offline-play issue. It remains on sale on Steam.
