# FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE: Complete Guide

Everything you need to get through Midgar and the Yuffie episode on PC: how the hybrid combat actually works, materia and weapon upgrades, the 18 chapters, Hard mode, and the new Streamlined Progression options added in 2026.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of version 1.007 (February 18, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

## Quick Start

1. **Stagger is everything.** Damage on a normal enemy is modest; damage on a Staggered enemy is huge. Every fight is about filling the orange Stagger bar, then unloading.
2. **Attacks build ATB; ATB pays for abilities, spells and items.** Basic attacks exist mostly to charge the ATB gauge. Don't just mash, spend ATB as soon as a gauge fills.
3. **Switch characters constantly.** AI-controlled allies build ATB slowly. Swapping to them and attacking fills their gauge far faster, and you can issue commands to allies from the shortcut menu without switching.
4. **Assess every new enemy.** Equip the Assess materia early. It reveals weaknesses and, crucially, tells you how to Pressure the enemy, which makes staggering much faster.
5. **Upgrade every weapon, not just the one you use.** Each weapon has its own core skills and a skill tree (Weapon Upgrades). Using a weapon's ability until proficiency is 100 percent teaches the character that ability permanently.
6. **Materia levels matter more than weapon choice early.** Keep your main spell materia equipped all the time so they level up.
7. **Guard is stronger than dodge against most attacks.** Holding guard reduces damage and still builds a bit of ATB; dodge rolls don't make you invincible.
8. **Do side quests in the open chapters.** Chapters 3, 8, 9 and 14 have side quests that give materia, accessories and key rewards.
9. **Save before bosses; use benches and vending machines.** Benches restore HP and MP and let you shop.
10. **Want to just enjoy the story?** Since version 1.006 (January 2026), the Streamlined Progression options let you turn on things like always-full HP and MP or 9999 damage per hit, individually and at any time.

## What's in INTERGRADE

| Content | Notes |
| --- | --- |
| FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE | The full 18-chapter game, covering the story up to the escape from Midgar |
| FF7R EPISODE INTERmission | A separate episode starring Yuffie Kisaragi as she infiltrates Midgar |
| Gift Box items | Cacstar weapon (INTERmission only), Midgar Bangle, Shinra Bangle, Corneo Armlet, Superstar Belt, Mako Crystal, Seraphic Earrings, and the Carbuncle, Chocobo Chick and Cactuar summon materia |
| Version 1.007 additions | Revival Earrings and a Survival Set, also claimed from the Gift Box |

Claim Gift Box items from the main menu. They're strong early: Seraphic Earrings and Mako Crystal make the first chapters noticeably easier. If you want a traditional challenge, skip them.

## Combat Fundamentals

### The core loop

1. **Attack** to build ATB.
2. **Spend ATB** on abilities, spells and items via the command menu (time slows to a crawl while it's open).
3. **Pressure** the enemy (hit its weakness or do what Assess says) to make the Stagger bar climb fast.
4. **Stagger**, then boost the damage multiplier and unload your strongest abilities and Limit Breaks.

### Character roles

| Character | Role | Standout abilities |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cloud | All-rounder; Operator mode for speed, Punisher mode for heavy hits and counters | Braver, Focused Thrust, Triple Slash, Infinity's End, Blade Burst, Counterstance |
| Barret | Ranged damage and tank; hits fliers | Focused Shot, Maximum Fury, Lifesaver |
| Tifa | Fastest stagger and highest multiplier | Unbridled Strength, Divekick, Overpower, Starshower, True Strike (Purple Pain), Omnistrike, Rise and Fall |
| Aerith | Mage and healer; very fragile | Tempest, Arcane Ward, Lustrous Shield, Ray of Judgment, ATB Ward, Soul Drain |

Key synergies:

- **Tifa builds the multiplier.** Unbridled Strength raises her chi level, upgrading her unique skill from Whirling Uppercut to Omnistrike to Rise and Fall. Once an enemy is Staggered, True Strike (learned from the late-game Purple Pain) adds a huge stagger-damage bonus.
- **Aerith's Arcane Ward** makes spells cast inside it fire twice. Stand in it and cast your biggest spell.
- **Focused Thrust and Focused Shot** are designed to fill the Stagger bar; use them when an enemy is Pressured.

### Limit Breaks and Summons

- **Limit gauge** fills as you take damage or stagger enemies. Each character starts with one Limit Break and learns a second later. Cloud's are Cross-Slash and Ascension; Barret's are Fire in the Hole and Catastrophe; Tifa's are Somersault and Dolphin Flurry; Aerith's are Healing Wind and Planet's Protection.
- **Summons** appear only in certain bigger fights when the summon gauge fills. Equip summon materia on the character with the most ATB to spare. The summon stays for a while and acts on its own, then finishes with a powerful attack.

## Materia

Materia slots are on weapons and armor. Linked slots let support materia pair with another materia.

| Materia type | Good early picks | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Magic (green) | Healing, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind | Heal and hit weaknesses |
| Support (blue) | Elemental, Magnify | Elemental + element on weapon adds damage; on armor adds resistance. Magnify + Healing heals the whole party |
| Complete (yellow) | Assess, Steal, Chakra, Prayer | Assess is mandatory |
| Independent (purple) | HP Up, MP Up, ATB Boost, Steadfast Block, First Strike, Parry | Stat and utility boosts |
| Summon (red) | Ifrit, Shiva and others | Big-fight damage |

Tips:

- Always carry **Healing** and **Revival** on at least one party member.
- **Elemental + Lightning on Cloud's weapon** is great against machines through much of the game.
- Level materia you need later (like Healing on Aerith) on whoever is in the party now.
- **Chadley** in the slums sells new materia after you complete his **Battle Intel** reports, and runs combat simulator fights that award summon materia.

## Weapons and Weapon Upgrades

- Each character has six weapons. Every weapon has a unique ability you can learn by raising proficiency.
- **SP** from levelling each weapon unlocks nodes (attack, magic, materia slots, HP, and unique effects). You can reset a weapon's tree for free.
- **Manuscripts** found in the world raise every weapon's SP cap.

| Character | Weapon examples |
| --- | --- |
| Cloud | Buster Sword, Iron Blade, Nail Bat, Hardedge, Mythril Saber, Twin Stinger |
| Tifa | Leather Gloves, Metal Knuckles, Sonic Strikers, Feathered Gloves, Mythril Claws, Purple Pain |
| Barret | Gatling Gun, Light Machine Gun, Big Bertha, Steel Pincers, Wrecking Ball, EKG Cannon |
| Aerith | Guard Stick, Silver Staff, Arcane Scepter, Bladed Staff, Mythril Rod, Reinforced Staff |

## Chapter Outline

| # | Chapter | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | The Destruction of Mako Reactor 1 | Tutorial; Cloud and Barret |
| 2 | Fateful Encounters | Short, linear |
| 3 | Home Sweet Slum | First side-quest hub; meet Chadley |
| 4 | Mad Dash | Jessie, Biggs and Wedge mission |
| 5 | Dogged Pursuit | Tunnels |
| 6 | Light the Way | Puzzle-heavy with robotic arms |
| 7 | A Trap is Sprung | Reactor infiltration |
| 8 | Budding Bodyguard | Aerith joins; side quests in Sector 5 |
| 9 | The Town that Never Sleeps | Wall Market; your choices affect an outfit scene |
| 10 | Rough Waters | Sewers |
| 11 | Haunted | Train graveyard |
| 12 | Fight for Survival | Sector 7 pillar |
| 13 | A Broken World | Aftermath |
| 14 | In Search of Hope | Last big side-quest chapter; includes a scene that varies with your earlier side quests and choices |
| 15 | The Day Midgar Stood Still | Leads into Shinra territory |
| 16 | The Belly of the Beast | Shinra infiltration |
| 17 | Deliverance from Chaos | Shinra HQ; includes the combat simulator |
| 18 | Destiny's Crossroads | Finale |

**Nothing is permanently missable.** After you finish the game, Chapter Selection lets you replay any chapter, keeping your levels, gear and materia.

## Hard Mode

Hard unlocks after the credits and is played from Chapter Selection.

- **No items** can be used.
- **Benches don't restore MP.** Every MP point has to last until the end of a chapter.
- Enemies are much stronger, and you earn boosted EXP and AP.

Hard mode survival:

- Bring **Prayer** and **Chakra** for healing without MP, and keep **Revival** on your sturdiest character.
- **Magnify + Healing** is expensive; save it for emergencies.
- **Steadfast Block, Parry and ATB Boost** are huge for survivability and tempo.
- Learn boss patterns in Normal first; Hard bosses punish unguarded big attacks.

## EPISODE INTERmission (Yuffie)

A standalone two-chapter story you launch from the main menu.

- Yuffie fights at range and melee by **throwing and retrieving** her shuriken. Ninjutsu lets her change the element of her attacks, which makes it easy to hit weaknesses.
- **Sonon** is her AI partner. In **Synergy** mode Yuffie and Sonon attack together, and some abilities have linked versions.
- **Fort Condor** is a side board game you play against NPCs across Midgar. Each win gets you new pieces; it's worth doing for rewards.
- The **Cacstar** weapon from the Gift Box only works in INTERmission.

## Streamlined Progression (v1.006+)

Added in January 2026. Each option can be toggled individually in the options menu at any time:

- Always have full HP and MP
- Cause 9999 damage with every hit
- Always carry the maximum number of each item (with some exceptions)

Useful for story replays before FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION (April 8, 2027), or for grinding manuscripts and side content quickly.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Mashing basic attack and never opening the command menu.** ATB unused is damage and healing wasted.
- **Playing only Cloud.** Tifa and Aerith are far stronger when you control them directly.
- **Ignoring Assess.** Many enemies look immune until you learn their Pressure trigger.
- **Not re-slotting materia after party changes.** When someone leaves the party, their materia stays with them. Check before bosses.
- **Dodge-rolling everything.** Many attacks outrange a dodge. Guard, and use Punisher mode's counter as Cloud.
- **Skipping side quests in Chapters 3, 8, 9 and 14.** They hand out useful materia and accessories.
- **Starting Hard mode without Prayer/Chakra and a plan for MP.**

## Advanced Tips

- **Cloud's Punisher mode + guard** counters melee hits automatically; very strong against humanoids.
- **Tifa: build chi with Unbridled Strength, then spend it on Rise and Fall or True Strike during Stagger** to push the multiplier.
- **Aerith's Arcane Ward + a big spell** doubles the spell. Great for boss burn phases.
- **Queue ally commands** through shortcut settings so you rarely switch menus.
- **Level summons early,** they get stronger with materia level.
- **Use Chapter Selection to farm AP** for materia in chapters with dense fights and a nearby bench.

## FAQ

**Is FF7 Remake a full remake of FFVII?**
No. It's the first part of a trilogy and covers the Midgar section. FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH (on Steam since January 2025) is part two, and FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION launches April 8, 2027.

**Can I miss anything?**
No. Chapter Selection unlocks after the first playthrough, and every side quest and collectible can be picked up afterwards.

**Should I play INTERmission before or after the main game?**
After. It's set during the main story but contains ties to the ending and to REBIRTH.

**What does Hard mode change?**
No items, no MP recovery at benches, much stronger enemies, and boosted EXP and AP.

**What are the Streamlined Progression options?**
Toggles added in version 1.006: full HP/MP, 9999 damage per hit, and maximum items. Each can be set individually from the options menu.

**Does save data carry over to later games?**
Square Enix has stated players with REMAKE INTERGRADE and/or REBIRTH save data will unlock special bonuses in FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION.
