# FIFA 22: Offline Player's Guide

How to get the most out of FIFA 22 on PC today: what still works, Career Mode (manager, Create a Club, and player), controls, attacking and defending fundamentals, and the settings that matter.

EA's FIFA licence ended on 31 December 2022, and the series continues as **EA Sports FC**. EA **shut down FIFA 22's online servers on November 4, 2024** on PC and consoles (Stadia went earlier, on January 18, 2023). Online modes such as Ultimate Team, VOLTA, Pro Clubs, and online Seasons no longer work. If you already own it, the offline modes below are still fully playable. If you want online football today, look at the current EA Sports FC release instead.

## Quick Start

1. **Know what's still playable.** Kick-Off, Career Mode (Manager and Player), Tournaments, Skill Games, and the Practice Arena are all offline. That's still a huge game.
2. **Use a controller.** FIFA 22 supports DualShock 4 and Xbox controllers on Steam. Keyboard works, but skill moves and precise passing are much easier on a pad.
3. **Learn to jockey.** Holding the jockey button (L2/LT) and staying goal-side beats rushing in with tackles.
4. **Pass more, sprint less.** Constant sprinting drains stamina and makes your first touch heavy. Short, simple passes win games against the AI.
5. **Finesse shots from the edge of the box** are the most reliable way to beat the keeper at the far post.

## Gameplay Fundamentals

### What changed in FIFA 22

- **HyperMotion** — new animations built from motion capture of 22 players in full-intensity matches. On PC, HyperMotion was *not* included; it was a PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Stadia feature. The PC version shares the older-generation gameplay base.
- **Explosive Sprint** — a burst of acceleration that makes quick direction changes deadly. Use it to beat defenders on the turn, not in straight lines.
- **Goalkeeper rework** — keepers behave more consistently and make fewer comical errors than in FIFA 21.

### Attacking tips

- **Build play patiently.** Pass across the back, draw the AI out, then play through the gaps. The AI pressures the ball carrier, so quick one-twos pull defenders out of position.
- **Timed finishing** — press shoot again at the right moment (the indicator turns green) for a more accurate shot. It's high risk: a red timing is worse than a normal shot. Practice it in Skill Games before relying on it.
- **Crosses** work better as low, driven crosses to the near post than high balls to the penalty spot.
- **Use your fullbacks.** Instruct them to overlap and switch play; the AI often leaves the far side open.
- **Skill moves.** Players with 4 or 5 star skills can do elaborate moves, but simple ones — ball roll, drag back, heel-to-heel — are usually enough.

- **Jockey and wait.** Let the attacker make the first move. Tackle when the ball is away from their feet.
- **Don't pull your center-backs out.** Switching to a defender and running at the ball leaves a gap behind. Use teammate contain to pressure instead.
- **Secondary press sparingly.** Holding teammate contain for too long drags your shape apart.
- **Slide tackles** are for last-ditch moments or when you're sure you'll get the ball; a mistimed slide in the box is a penalty.

### Tactics

- **Custom Tactics.** Set defensive style (Balanced, Press after Possession Loss, Constant Pressure, etc.) and offensive style (Balanced, Possession, Fast Build Up, Long Ball, etc.), then width and depth.
- **Constant Pressure** tires players quickly; use it for short periods.
- **Player Instructions** let you set things like "Stay Back While Attacking" for fullbacks or "Get In Behind" for strikers.

## Career Mode

### Manager Career

Your job is to meet board objectives (domestic success, youth development, finances, brand exposure) while managing budgets and squad morale.

- **Transfer budget and wage budget** are separate. You can move money between them in the budget screen.
- **Negotiations** involve the transfer fee, then the player's contract. Add-ons like sell-on clauses can lower the up-front fee.
- **Loans with option to buy** are a cheap way to trial a player.
- **Squad morale and match sharpness** matter. Players who don't play lose sharpness and morale; rotate your squad.
- **Training** — set up training sessions to boost sharpness and improve attributes. Use the recommended drill for each player's role.

### Scouting and youth

- Hire scouts with high Experience and Judgement ratings. Send them to countries known for strong youth prospects.
- Youth players with a high potential range are the best long-term investment. Promote them when they're ready and give them minutes.
- The global transfer network lets you scout senior players by position and attribute requirements.

### Create a Club (new in FIFA 22)

You design a club and pick a league for it to replace an existing team.

1. **Name, crest, kits, and stadium.** Purely cosmetic, but a big part of the fun.
2. **Club expectations.** Choose things like transfer budget and the board's priorities.
3. **Squad setup.** Choose the squad's average age and overall rating range. A low-rated, young squad makes for a long rebuild; a high-rated older squad starts strong but declines.

Tip: start in a lower league for a slower, more satisfying climb. Promotion and relegation work normally.

### Player Career

You create or pick a player and play only that player's role.

- **Growth** — XP from matches and training upgrades skills. Pick a skill tree that suits your position.
- You can take control of the whole match on occasions, but in most games you focus on your player.

- **Mods.** Community tools (such as mod managers and editors built on the Frosty toolkit) add updated kits, faces, and squads. They are third-party and unsupported; back up saves before using them.
