Far Cry Primal: Complete Guide

This guide covers Far Cry Primal on PC: what to prioritize in your first hours in Oros, how beast taming and the Owl work, building up the Wenja village and its specialists, the legendary beasts, outposts and forts, and the achievements worth planning for, including Survivor mode.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC build (Steam Achievements added 13 February 2025). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status: a finished single-player game with no more balance patches. On 13 February 2025 Ubisoft added Steam Achievements. If you already unlocked achievements in Ubisoft Connect, launch the game once through Steam and they sync automatically. The Steam version still runs through Ubisoft Connect.

Quick Start

  1. Use the Owl before every fight. Takkar's owl scouts ahead and tags enemies and targets. Tag first, attack second.
  2. Tame a beast early. Throw bait at a feeding predator and tame it. A companion changes the whole game.
  3. Fight at night only when you mean to. Predators are much more aggressive after dark. Gather and hunt during the day.
  4. Collect everything as you move. Wood, stone, reeds, plants and skins feed your crafting and hut upgrades. Most early bottlenecks are material shortages.
  5. Recruit the specialists. Each specialist (Sayla, Tensay, Jayma, Karoosh, Wogah and others) unlocks a set of skills, crafting and missions.
  6. Upgrade huts. Hut upgrades unlock skills and better weapon tiers. The "Home Improvement" and "Real Estate Baron" achievements track this.
  7. Capture bonfires and outposts. They're your fast-travel points and safe zones, and they grow the Wenja population.
  8. Learn your weapons. Club for knockdowns, spear for big hits and throws, bow for range, sling (unlocked later in the story) for quiet ranged hits. Carry all of them.
  9. Heal your beast. Tamed beasts can go down. Heal them instead of losing them. There's even an achievement for doing it 25 times.

The Setting and Factions

You play Takkar, a Wenja hunter, in the valley of Oros around 10,000 BCE. There are three tribes:

Tribe Leader Style
Wenja Takkar (you, as it grows) Scattered hunters you gather into a village
Udam Ull Warlike northern cave-dwellers. Brutal melee
Izila Batari Southern, agrarian fire-worshippers. Fire weapons

The main story ends with the two tribal arcs: "The Hunt for Ull" and "The Fall of Batari" (both are achievements).

Core Systems

The Owl

The owl is your drone. Early on it lets you:

Beast Master progression adds owl attack abilities, including diving attacks and dropping explosives. "Feathered Friend" is for killing 15 enemies with the owl. Owl strikes are strong for picking off lone archers before a stealth approach.

Beast taming

Throw bait near a predator that's eating, then approach and tame it while it feeds. Tamed beasts:

Beast roles, roughly:

Beast type Strength
Stealth predators (big cats such as the jaguar) Silent kills, so they suit outposts
Wolves and dogs Early reliable companions that track enemies
Bears Tanks that soak damage in open fights
Sabretooth Fast, hard-hitting, and rideable
Rare and legendary beasts Stronger versions with better stats

"Menagerie" is for taming 7 beasts and "Fancy Friend" for 1 rare beast.

Legendary beasts (Beast Master missions)

Tensay's Beast Master line leads to the legendary beasts. The achievements confirm these ones:

Beast Achievement
Bloodfang Sabretooth "Here Kitty": tame it
Great Scar Bear "Big Teddy": tame it
Snowblood Wolf "Good Boy": tame it
Bloodtusk Mammoth "Endangered": fight it

The Bloodfang Sabretooth is the endgame favourite: fast, rideable and deadly. Go for it once Tensay's line opens up and you have plenty of healing and a strong bow.

Weapons and crafting

There are no guns. You craft primitive weapons from materials you gather:

Weapon Use
Club Melee knockdowns. Can be lit on fire
Spear Heavy thrown or melee damage. Long-range spear kills are an achievement ("Right On Target": 50+ feet)
Bow Your main ranged weapon ("Bullseye": arrow kill at 70+ feet)
Sling Quiet ranged option, unlocked later in the story
Throwing shards Fast, quiet thrown damage
Bombs Sting bombs (bees), fire, and poison that turns enemies on each other
Hunting traps Place, lure, finish

Rules of thumb:

The Wenja village

The village is your base. You grow it by:

  1. Recruiting specialists through story and side missions.
  2. Building and upgrading huts with gathered materials. Each upgrade unlocks skills and weapon upgrades.
  3. Growing the population by rescuing Wenja, capturing bonfires and outposts, and doing "Help Wenja" events. "Subdivisions" is for reaching 20 population.

A bigger village also pays out resources into its stash over time. Collect them when you visit.

Specialists and skills

Specialist Joins via / known for
Sayla The first Wenja you meet. Gathering
Tensay The shaman. Beast Master skills and the legendary beasts ("Spiritual Advisor")
Jayma Hunter. Archery and hunting ("Gray Huntress")
Karoosh Warrior ("Deadeye")
Wogah Crafter. Weapons and tools ("Mister Fix-It")
Others Later recruits, including Urki and defectors from the enemy tribes, add their own lines

"Twelve Labors" is for completing 12 specialist missions and "Expert Wenja" for learning every skill.

Skill priorities for a new player:

  1. Beast taming and riding skills (from Tensay).
  2. Extra health and stealth takedown skills, including chain takedowns.
  3. Gathering boosts, which speed up everything else.
  4. Owl attack upgrades.
  5. Bigger ammo pouches and bags. Craft pouches from skins you hunt, because capacity matters a lot.

Open World Activities

Activity What it gives
Bonfires Fast travel, safe zones, a bigger territory
Outposts Territory and population ("Skirmish": 10, "Expansion": all)
Forts Major enemy strongholds ("Conquest": all)
Help Wenja Population and rewards ("Good Neighbor": 15)
Beast Kill quests Rare skins ("Master Tracker": 5)
Tribal Clash Big fights between tribes ("Crush Your Enemies": 10)
Collectibles and hidden locations "Mapmaker" (15 hidden locations), "Cave Hoarder" (80 collectibles)

Outpost approach (reliable)

  1. Send the owl up and tag everyone.
  2. Kill lone archers with the owl strike or bow from outside.
  3. Send your stealth beast after isolated targets.
  4. Throw a poison bomb into the biggest group.
  5. Clean up with takedowns ("Killer's Belief": 25).
  6. Go loud with fire and your bear if it falls apart.

Forts are harder. Do Wogah and Karoosh upgrades first and bring your strongest tamed beast.

Survivor Mode and Difficulty

Survivor mode "drastically increases the game's difficulty". It can be combined with a Second Chance option or with Permadeath, and each combination has its own achievement. The survivor achievements are "TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN" (any difficulty), its (2ND CHANCE) and (PERMADEATH) variants, and "SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST" (Expert + Permadeath). Ubisoft's own jokey text for that last one says "No-one will ever achieve it" (people have, after many attempts).
