Fallout 76: Complete Guide

Everything a new or returning Vault Dweller needs in Appalachia as of fall 2026: first hours, S.P.E.C.I.A.L. and perk cards, build archetypes, C.A.M.P. building, currencies, the endgame loop, and the current Slasher update and Season 26.

Researched September 2026. Current as of "The Slasher" update (September 15, 2026) and Season 26: Beware the Blood Moon. Live games change, so check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Follow the Overseer's trail first. Leaving Vault 76 starts the main questline, which teaches crafting, C.A.M.P. building, and the map's early regions (the Forest). Wastelanders content (the Wayward, the Foundation, and the Crater) opens up soon after.
  2. Pick up everything early, then learn to scrap. Junk scraps into components at any workbench. Adhesive, screws, springs, gears, and aluminum are the ones you'll always want.
  3. Place your C.A.M.P. early. It's a free fast-travel point, a stash box, workbenches, water purifiers, and crop plots. Move it anytime (it costs a few caps).
  4. Weight is the early-game enemy. Keep junk scrapped, sell or drop spare weapons, and stash what you can. Stash space is limited unless you have Fallout 1st's Scrapbox.
  5. Take perk cards seriously. At level 50 your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. is fully assigned. Plan a build early (see below) and move points around later if needed.
  6. Join a public team (Social menu). Teams share XP bonuses and team perks, and you still play solo if you want. The "Casual" team is a good default.
  7. Do daily and weekly challenges and Seasons. S.C.O.R.E. from challenges earns Season tickets. Season 26 has Blood Moon cosmetics, and a Legacy Season is running alongside it.
  8. Show up to public events. Events like Eviction Notice, Moonshine Jamboree, Radiation Rumble, and the Infestations world activity are the best XP, loot, and Legendary scrip sources for most levels.
  9. Don't panic about PvP. Adventure mode PvP is opt-in. Damage is tiny unless you fight back, and you can turn on Pacifist in the settings.

Build Archetypes

These are well-established playstyles, not exact card lists. Perk values have changed several times (for example, The Slasher buffed Lone Wanderer's damage reduction to all damage types, and Nocturnal Fortitude's HP), so verify card text in-game.

Build Core idea Key perks and gear
Commando Automatic rifles, often VATS Commando (Perception), Tank Killer, Concentrated Fire, Grim Reaper's Sprint
Rifleman / Sniper Semi-auto rifles, big hits Rifleman, Tank Killer, Covert Operative (stealth), Better Criticals
Heavy Gunner / PA tank Miniguns, gatling lasers, and Power Armor Heavy Gunner (Strength), Stabilized (in PA), Power User, Bullet Shield
Melee Two-handed (Slugger) or one-handed (Gladiator) Slugger or Gladiator, Incisor, Martial Artist, Bloody Mess
Unarmed Fists and gauntlets Iron Fist, Incisor, Martial Artist
Shotgun Close-range burst Shotgunner, Enforcer (stagger and cripple), Skeet Shooter
Bloodied Stays at low health for massive damage Nerd Rage, Adrenal Reaction, Bloodied legendaries, Unyielding armor
Full-health Stays at full health for reliability Vampire's or Aristocrat's weapons, Overeater's or Vanguard's armor

Mutations (from radiation, or reliably from serums) add big buffs with drawbacks. Starched Genes keeps them, and Class Freak reduces their downsides. Adrenal Reaction, Marsupial, Speed Demon, Herd Mentality, Twisted Muscles (melee), and Bird Bones are common picks.

Playable Ghoul (added in the Ghoul Within update, March 2025): At higher level you can become a ghoul through a questline. Ghouls use a Glow and Feral meter and get ghoul-only perks. It's a big change, so read the quest warnings before committing.

The optional subscription adds private worlds, the Scrapbox (unlimited junk storage), the Survival Tent (a second fast-travel point and stash), monthly Atoms, and exclusive cosmetics. It's not required, but the Scrapbox is the biggest quality-of-life perk in the game. Bethesda periodically runs free "Limited Preview" trials (one ran June 7 to 15, 2026).

FAQ

Is Fallout 76 worth playing solo? Yes. Most quests and much of the map work solo. Lone Wanderer (buffed in The Slasher) and public teams make solo play smoother, and events are drop-in.

What is the current season? Season 26: Beware the Blood Moon, which launched with The Slasher on September 15, 2026, plus the Legacy Season running alongside it.

Where do I start The Slasher? Tune your Pip-Boy radio to the "Breaking News" station. The story updates weekly through the fall.

Is there a level cap? There's no hard level cap. S.P.E.C.I.A.L. assignment finishes at level 50, and after that you keep earning perk cards and legendary perk slots.

How do I become a ghoul? Through the Ghoul Within questline, available at higher level. It's a major choice, so read the warnings carefully.

Is Fallout 1st required? No. It's convenient (Scrapbox, private worlds, tent) but everything important is earnable without it.

Is PvP forced? No. In Adventure mode, PvP only happens if both sides engage, and Pacifist mode prevents accidental fights.
