Eternal Return: Beginner-to-Ranked Guide

A guide to Eternal Return's MOBA-meets-battle-royale loop on Lumia Island: routing, crafting, credits and the Kiosk, legendary materials, fighting as a squad, ranked, and what changed in Season 12.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Season 12, patch 12.4 (September 17, 2026) and the 12.4a hotfix. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Play Normal and the tutorials first. Eternal Return has far more systems than a typical MOBA or battle royale. Learn your character and routes before Ranked.
  2. Pick one or two characters and one weapon type each. Each character (Experiment) can use specific weapon types, and their build paths are different.
  3. Use the recommended route. Before the match, pick a route (default or community). It plans your crafting targets and which areas to loot, and the game tracks what you still need.
  4. Craft, don't just loot. You combine materials into better gear. Finish your weapon and key armor pieces before fighting other teams.
  5. Watch the Restricted Areas. Zones close as the match advances. Standing in a restricted area drains a timer; when it runs out, you die.
  6. Earn and spend credits. Credits come from kills, animals and over time, and buy materials, gadgets and legendary items at the Kiosk or via remote drop.
  7. Stay with your team. Standard mode is 3-player squads. Fights are 3v3 — splitting up is the most common beginner death.
  8. Use your Tactical Skill. Every player has a tactical skill slot (for example, Blink). Choose one that fits your character.
  9. Try the new Gambit system in Ranked (pilot in 12.4): solo-queue players can declare a Gambit for a 200% RP multiplier (300% if the whole team does it — "King's Gambit").

How a Match Works

Core Systems

Credits and the Kiosk

Source Notes
Passive income Credits accrue over time; patch 12.4 made Night 1 credit gain faster (1 per 1.45s instead of 1 per 1.5s)
Eliminations and assists 10 credits per elimination and 8 per assist (as of 12.4)
Wildlife and objectives Hunting gives credits and materials

Spend credits at Kiosks (in set areas) or with remote delivery options. Typical purchases: missing materials for your build, legendary materials, and revive/utility items. Gadgets such as Mobile Kiosk and Mobile VLS cannot be placed next to Rifts as of 12.4.

Vision and Information

Cameras and Drones help your team spot enemies. As of 12.4 they are destroyed automatically when your team is eliminated. Use vision to avoid third parties and to track approaching squads.

Items and Rarity

Gear rarities go from Common (white) to Uncommon (green), Rare (blue), Epic (purple), Legendary (gold), and Mythic. Aim for a completed Epic weapon early and push Legendary pieces during the Day 2–Night 2 window.

Character Stats

Attack Power, Skill Amplification, Attack Speed, Critical Chance, Defense, Cooldown Reduction, Omnisyphon and Movement Speed are the key stats. Your weapon type decides whether you build basic-attack or skill-damage.

Tactical Skills

A separate skill slot usable by every character. Common options include Blink (reposition), and defensive or utility options. Many high-level players pick Blink until they know a situation calls for something else.

Chronosphere

Late-game safe zones include a temporary Chronosphere; 12.4 reduced its second shrink area from 5m to 4m.

Game Modes

Mode Notes
Normal Casual squad matches — best for learning
Ranked 3-player squad ranked; RP from placement and kills
Cobalt Protocol A 4v4 team mode with its own "infusion" system (infusions reworked in 12.3)
Union Circuit (Beta) Returned as a limited beta with 12.3 (September 3–16, 2026): up to 4 players form a Union and compete at set times per region with S–F tiered rankings. Check the news page for its next run.

Ranked

Tiers go Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Meteorite, Mythril, then Demigod and Eternity at the top. RP depends on placement and eliminations.
