# Eternal Return: Beginner-to-Ranked Guide

A guide to Eternal Return's MOBA-meets-battle-royale loop on Lumia Island: routing, crafting, credits and the Kiosk, legendary materials, fighting as a squad, ranked, and what changed in Season 12.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of Season 12, patch 12.4 (September 17, 2026) and the 12.4a hotfix. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

## Quick Start

1. **Play Normal and the tutorials first.** Eternal Return has far more systems than a typical MOBA or battle royale. Learn your character and routes before Ranked.
2. **Pick one or two characters and one weapon type each.** Each character (Experiment) can use specific weapon types, and their build paths are different.
3. **Use the recommended route.** Before the match, pick a route (default or community). It plans your crafting targets and which areas to loot, and the game tracks what you still need.
4. **Craft, don't just loot.** You combine materials into better gear. Finish your weapon and key armor pieces before fighting other teams.
5. **Watch the Restricted Areas.** Zones close as the match advances. Standing in a restricted area drains a timer; when it runs out, you die.
6. **Earn and spend credits.** Credits come from kills, animals and over time, and buy materials, gadgets and legendary items at the Kiosk or via remote drop.
7. **Stay with your team.** Standard mode is 3-player squads. Fights are 3v3 — splitting up is the most common beginner death.
8. **Use your Tactical Skill.** Every player has a tactical skill slot (for example, Blink). Choose one that fits your character.
9. **Try the new Gambit system in Ranked** (pilot in 12.4): solo-queue players can declare a Gambit for a 200% RP multiplier (300% if the whole team does it — "King's Gambit").

## How a Match Works

- You drop onto **Lumia Island** with your squad. The island is split into named areas (e.g. Hospital, Hotel, Cemetery, Temple, School, Archery Range, Forest, and more).
- Each match runs on a **day/night cycle**. Each phase closes more areas as Restricted Areas; the safe zone shrinks until the final fight.
- You **gather materials** from boxes and the ground, and **craft** weapons, armor and consumables.
- You **hunt wildlife** (chickens, boars, wolves, bears, bats and dogs) for experience, meat and credits. Stronger monsters appear later.
- **Special bosses and objectives** (such as Wickline, Alpha and Omega) spawn at set times and drop valuable materials. Legendary resources like the **Meteorite** and **Tree of Life** spawn on set days — patch 12.4 moved Day 2 Tree of Life spawns to only the Hotel and Cemetery, and raised meteorite drops from 2 to 3.
- **Mythril** and **Force Core** are late-game materials for the strongest items. **VF Blood Samples** come from the toughest objectives.
- The last squad standing wins. Downed teammates can be revived by teammates before they're eliminated.

## Core Systems

### Credits and the Kiosk

| Source | Notes |
|---|---|
| Passive income | Credits accrue over time; patch 12.4 made Night 1 credit gain faster (1 per 1.45s instead of 1 per 1.5s) |
| Eliminations and assists | 10 credits per elimination and 8 per assist (as of 12.4) |
| Wildlife and objectives | Hunting gives credits and materials |

Spend credits at **Kiosks** (in set areas) or with remote delivery options. Typical purchases: missing materials for your build, legendary materials, and revive/utility items. Gadgets such as Mobile Kiosk and Mobile VLS cannot be placed next to **Rifts** as of 12.4.

### Vision and Information

Cameras and Drones help your team spot enemies. As of 12.4 they are destroyed automatically when your team is eliminated. Use vision to avoid third parties and to track approaching squads.

### Items and Rarity

Gear rarities go from Common (white) to Uncommon (green), Rare (blue), Epic (purple), Legendary (gold), and Mythic. Aim for a completed Epic weapon early and push Legendary pieces during the Day 2–Night 2 window.

### Character Stats

Attack Power, Skill Amplification, Attack Speed, Critical Chance, Defense, Cooldown Reduction, Omnisyphon and Movement Speed are the key stats. Your weapon type decides whether you build basic-attack or skill-damage.

### Tactical Skills

A separate skill slot usable by every character. Common options include Blink (reposition), and defensive or utility options. Many high-level players pick Blink until they know a situation calls for something else.

### Chronosphere

Late-game safe zones include a temporary Chronosphere; 12.4 reduced its second shrink area from 5m to 4m.

## Game Modes

| Mode | Notes |
|---|---|
| Normal | Casual squad matches — best for learning |
| Ranked | 3-player squad ranked; RP from placement and kills |
| Cobalt Protocol | A 4v4 team mode with its own "infusion" system (infusions reworked in 12.3) |
| Union Circuit (Beta) | Returned as a limited beta with 12.3 (September 3–16, 2026): up to 4 players form a Union and compete at set times per region with S–F tiered rankings. Check the news page for its next run. |
| Tutorials and Custom | Learn characters, practice routes |

## Ranked

Tiers go Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Meteorite, Mythril, then Demigod and Eternity at the top. RP depends on placement and eliminations.

**Season 12 ranked notes:**

- **Gambit (pilot in 12.4):** Diamond-and-below players get 2 Bullets per week (granted when logging in each Wednesday at 20:00 UTC). Declaring a Gambit gives a 200% RP multiplier; all three teammates doing it is a King's Gambit at 300%. It's high risk — only declare when you're confident.
- **Matchmaking:** stricter top-tier queues. 12.4 restricted the highest queue to Diamond 2+ in NA and Diamond 4+ in EU (and Mythril 8,300 RP+ in Asia 1); a September 23, 2026 adjustment raised the Asia Mythril queue's highest tier to 8,500 RP.

## Current Meta Notes (Season 12, patch 12.4)

Balance changes every two weeks, so check the latest patch notes before committing to a pick.

| Patch | Buffed | Nerfed |
|---|---|---|
| 12.3 (Sept 3) | Nathapon, Daniel, Leni, Leon, Lucia, Li Dailin, Mai, Bianca, Bihyung, Charlotte, Xiukai, Shoichi, Sissela, Adina, Arda, Jan, Yumin, Irem, Hart, Henry, Hyejin, Hisui, Fiora, Kenneth, Craver | Garnet, Nadine, Nicky, Darko, Elena, Yuki, Jackie, Camilo, Cathy, Ly Anh, Chiara, Sua |
| 12.4 (Sept 17) | NiaH, Daniel, Debi & Marlene, Lucia, Li Dailin, Mirka, Bihyung, Isol, Isaac, Aiden, Yumin, Hyunwoo | Nadine, Nicky, Tia, Laura, Leon, Charlotte, Zahir, Tsubame, Cathy, Echion, Emma, William, István, Alex |

Takeaways:

- **Lucia** (a recent release) got buffs in both patches and, in 12.3, a price cut from 9,900 to 8,020 A-Coin.
- **Daniel, Li Dailin, Bihyung, and Yumin** were buffed twice in a row.
- **Nadine, Nicky and Cathy** were nerfed twice — they were likely overperforming.
- Item-wise, 12.3 nerfed Dagger weapons (Maharaja, Soul Reaper) and buffed Assault Rifles (Type 95, AK-12).
- **Seres** is the next announced character (previewed September 23, 2026); check the official site for her release date and weapon.

## Beginner-Friendly Characters

Pick characters with simple kits and forgiving builds. Commonly recommended starters include Jackie (Dagger/Axe style melee), Hyunwoo (tanky brawler), Yuki (Two-handed Sword duelist), Isol (traps and guns), and Nadine (bow/crossbow ranged). Check your region's stats sites (for example dak.gg) for current win rates.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Fighting before your weapon is done.** Being a crafting step behind usually loses a fight.
- **Ignoring the route.** Wandering wastes time and leaves you under-geared.
- **Splitting from your squad.** 1v3 fights are almost unwinnable.
- **Forgetting the Restricted Area timer.** It can kill you while you loot.
- **Taking every objective fight.** Contesting Alpha/Omega or legendary spawns invites third parties. Take them when you have vision and an advantage.
- **Overspending credits early.** Save for the items that complete your build.
- **Declaring Gambits casually.** You have limited Bullets per week.

## Advanced Tips

- **Route optimization:** community routes are tuned for each character and weapon; learn a couple well, then adjust per match.
- **Timings:** memorize when bosses, meteorites and trees spawn. Being in position first wins more than raw aim.
- **Vision control:** place cameras near your route and where objectives spawn.
- **Hunt efficiently:** early wildlife gives experience and credits — kill it on your path.
- **Third-party awareness:** after a fight, heal and reposition immediately; another team is likely coming.
- **Play the Chronosphere:** late circles are small. Position before the shrink, not during.
