Escape Simulator: Complete Guide

A spoiler-free guide to Escape Simulator: how to think like an escape-room solver, co-op tips, what rooms and DLC are available, cross-platform play after the 2026 Xbox launch, the community rooms, and how to build your own.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the June 2026 updates (Multiplayer server fix and Steam Frame beta support). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Pick up and examine everything. If it isn't nailed down, you can grab it, rotate it and look at every side. Clues hide on the undersides of objects, inside books and behind furniture.
  2. Move furniture and smash things. Pots break, drawers open, furniture slides. Destruction is part of the design.
  3. Pin clues to your screen. You can pin a clue (a note, a symbol, a page) so it stays visible while you work on another puzzle. Use it constantly.
  4. Start with the four main packs — Labyrinth of Egypt, Adrift in Space, Edgewood Mansion and Omega Corporation — then the extras.
  5. Play co-op with 2 to 3 people on built-in rooms. The developers recommend up to three for official rooms; more is allowed but gets chaotic.
  6. Use hints when stuck. There's no shame; rooms are designed by real-life escape room operators and some leaps are tough.
  7. Try community rooms. Over 4,000 community rooms exist via Steam Workshop, plus mod.io for cross-platform sharing.
  8. Cross-play works with Xbox since May 2026, so you can play with friends on Xbox, Game Pass and the Windows PC Store.

DLC

Paid DLC packs add more rooms. Recent ones include the Magic DLC (made with Somnium Games) and the Spy DLC (2025), which received hint and multiplayer fixes in its September 2025 hotfix. Check the store page for the full current DLC list.

How to Solve Rooms

Escape rooms follow patterns. Learning them speeds everything up.

The search pass

  1. Sweep the room. Open every drawer, look under and behind every object, check walls, ceilings and floors.
  2. Collect everything portable. Keys, tools, notes, odd objects.
  3. Note every lock. Count combination locks, keypads, padlocks, directional locks, symbol panels. Each one is a puzzle waiting for a clue.
  4. Match clues to locks. A four-digit lock needs a four-digit clue; a symbol panel needs a symbol sequence.

Common puzzle types

Type What to look for
Number codes Counts of objects, dates, clocks, math on notes
Symbol/color sequences Order of paintings, colored items, lights
Hidden text UV lights, reflections, text on object undersides
Physical puzzles Placing objects on pedestals, fitting pieces, weights
Riddles Books and notes with wordplay
Mechanisms Levers, gears, pipes; order matters
Spatial Maps, floor tiles, compass directions

Co-op Tips

Cross-platform play

Since the 27 May 2026 update, Escape Simulator supports cross-platform multiplayer with Xbox (including Game Pass and the Windows PC Store). A hotfix on 28 May improved cross-platform stability, versioning and Workshop room multiplayer. On 8 June 2026, the multiplayer code server moved to a new host to fix a problem where some ASUS routers' AiProtection feature blocked connections.

If friends can't connect: make sure everyone is on the latest version, and if you have an ASUS router, check its security settings (the server move should have fixed most cases).

Community Rooms and the Room Editor

Playing community rooms

Building your own

The built-in room editor lets you design rooms with objects, locks and logic, then share them.

Pine Studio features community builders in its "Meet the Builders" posts — worth reading for design tips.

VR and New Platforms

Escape Simulator 2

Escape Simulator 2 released on 27 October 2025 with 12 new, larger rooms (about 50 minutes each), a social Lobby, rebuilt graphics/physics/networking, autosave, drop-in multiplayer and Room Editor 2.0 (in beta). Pine Studio has said it will keep releasing content for the first game too, and the April 2026 announcement confirmed ongoing support for both.
