Elite Dangerous: Complete Guide

From your first Sidewinder launch to engineering, big-money careers, and the 2026 additions (Operations, the Nomad and Rhino surface mining), this guide covers the systems that matter for a new or returning Commander.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Rhino SRV Update (2 September 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Do the tutorials first. The training scenarios (docking, supercruise, combat, SRV) teach the flight model that the rest of the game assumes you know. Elite is famously hands-off after that.
  2. Bind your controls properly. The game is playable on keyboard and mouse, HOTAS, or controller, but the defaults leave important functions unbound. Set up throttle, boost, frame shift drive, landing gear, cargo scoop, hardpoints, and the four panels before flying.
  3. Always carry the credits for your rebuy. If your ship is destroyed you pay an insurance "rebuy" (a percentage of the ship's value). If you cannot pay, you lose the ship. The rebuy cost is shown on your right-hand panel.
  4. Get a Docking Computer early (or learn manual docking well). Being slow in the "no fire zone" and loitering in the station slot gets you fined or shot.
  5. Use the Galaxy Map filters. Find stations with outfitting, shipyards, black markets, and Interstellar Factors using the map's search and filters; third-party tools such as Inara and Spansh make this far faster.
  6. Pick a money-maker and upgrade into a better ship. The Cobra Mk III, Adder, and Type-6 are classic first upgrades. Early exobiology, trading, and missions all work.
  7. Scoop fuel. Stars of class K, G, B, F, O, A, M ("KGB FOAM") are scoopable. Fit a Fuel Scoop on anything that travels.
  8. Stay in Solo or Private Group while learning if you prefer. Everything except direct player interaction is identical across modes and your progress is shared.
  9. Odyssey is where everything current lives. New ships, on-foot content, Operations, and surface mining are built on the Odyssey client.

Core Systems

Flight modes

Mode What it is Key tip
Normal space Combat, docking, landing Keep throttle in the blue zone for best turning
Supercruise Faster-than-light travel within a system Hit 75% throttle at 7 seconds to target for a clean drop
Hyperspace jump FSD jump to another star system Charge, align, jump; mass lock blocks charging
Glide Planetary approach phase Keep your nose within the safe angle

Ship modules in brief

Every ship has core internals (Power Plant, Thrusters, Frame Shift Drive, Life Support, Power Distributor, Sensors, Fuel Tank), optional internals (cargo racks, shields, scoops, scanners, cabins, hangars), hardpoints (weapons), and utility mounts (shield boosters, heat sinks, chaff, scanners). Module class (1 to 8) is size; rating (A to E) is quality. A-rated is best overall, D-rated is lightest (ideal for thrusters and FSD on explorers).

Engineering

Engineers unlock by meeting requirements (reputation, referrals, delivered items). Each blueprint grade (1 to 5) costs materials: raw (mined or collected on planets), manufactured (from wrecks, signal sources, and ship scanning), and encoded (data scanned from ships, beacons, and settlements). Experimental effects are the final layer. On foot, the Odyssey engineers upgrade suits and weapons using on-foot components and data.

Priorities for most builds: FSD Increased Range first (it changes everything about travel), then shields, thrusters, and power distributor. Pinned blueprints let you upgrade on the go without returning to the engineer.

The Guardian FSD Booster (unlocked through Guardian technology brokers with materials gathered at Guardian sites) adds flat jump range and is worth doing once you are comfortable leaving the bubble.

Operations and Merc Coins (Operations Update, July 2026)

The Operations Update (1 July 2026) added squad-based scenarios launched from a new Operation Runner deployment vessel. You can start one alone or with a squad, with optional matchmaking to fill slots. Six Operations shipped:

Operation Objective
Counter Attack Infiltrate an attacked Megaship, track down who did it, then goad them into a fight at their base
Burning Rescue Free the inhabitants of a station under siege by blowing the door clamps while fighting off enemies
Megaship Massacre Reclaim Retake an offline Megaship from looters, then fight enemy ships back to safety against the clock
Megaship Massacre Strike Sneak aboard a Megaship and eliminate hostile crew before time runs out
Surface Rescue Rescue a planet port's inhabitants before the attackers return with reinforcements
Pirate Hunt Destroy enough of a Pirate Boss's fleet to draw them out, then kill them

Operations reward Merc Coins, an earnable currency that buys ship modules (weapons, core and optional internals) and engineering blueprints. Follow-up patches in early July fixed missing rewards and restored exploration data lost around the 2 July maintenance; if your visited-star cache looks wrong, use Resync Local Data under the main menu's Help and Info section.

Money-Making Careers

Career Starting ship Notes
Exobiology Any jump-capable ship with an SRV, or the Nomad Scan organics on planet surfaces with the Genetic Sampler; very high payouts for first footfall and rare species
Trading Type-6, Python, Type-9, Cutter Buy low, sell high; use a route planner for loops
Mining (laser/core) Type-6, Python, Type-11 Prospector Hotspots in rings; refine and sell high-demand commodities
Surface mining Rhino SRV New in September 2026; see below
Bounty hunting Vulture, Krait Mk II, Python Mk II Resource Extraction Sites and Compromised Nav Beacons
Passenger missions Lynx Highliner, Beluga, Orca Lynx carries up to 225 passengers with Mk II cabins
Colonisation Any hauler Claim and build out systems (System Colonisation)
Operations Combat and on-foot loadouts Merc Coins and engineered gear

Exobiology tips: Each species needs three samples taken a minimum distance apart (the distance varies by genus). The Composition Scanner and Detailed Surface Scanner help you locate signals; the new Nomad has a built-in Mk II Biological Scanner that detects biological signals from the cockpit. Sell data at Vista Genomics.

New in 2026

Lynx Highliner (April 2026)

A medium Zorgon Peterson passenger liner available for credits to all Odyssey owners. It supports Mk II Business and Economy Passenger Cabins with a 1.5x capacity increase. The update also added bulk evacuation passenger missions and medium-pad passenger variants, and increased passenger spawn rates in colonised systems.

Nomad (July 2026)

A small ship-launched vessel for planetary exploration, deployed from a compatible vessel bay (Mk I and Mk II). Park your big explorer in orbit or nearby, fly the Nomad down to hard-to-reach organics, then return. Narrow helicopter-style landing skids let it perch on uneven terrain. At launch it was sold as Arx packages (Standard 16,520, Stellar 33,000, Galactic 60,000 Arx). Frontier has historically released new ships for credits some time after the Arx early-access window; check in-game shipyards for current availability.

Rhino SRV and Surface Mining (September 2026)

Vodel's Rhino is a heavy, armoured SRV built for extraction:

The Detailed Surface Scanner now reveals Planetary Mining Locations on planets. Deposits have density levels, deplete, and replenish over time; rig efficiency depends on deposit density and temperature. New commodities include Bastnäsite, Deuterium, Diamond, Helium, Helium-3, Iridium, Magnesite, Olivine, Periclase dunite, Quartz pyroxenite, Ruby, Sapphire, and Thortveitite. Launch packages were Standard (16,520 Arx), Stellar (33,000 Arx), Galactic (60,000 Arx), and a Type-11 Prospector bundle (100,000 Arx). Frontier listed a known issue at launch where the Rhino collected 9 chunks instead of the intended 12.

Balance values on surface mining are explicitly an "initial balance pass," so expect payouts to change.

What's next

The September 2026 Dev Log teased a major feature re-work planned for later in 2026 and a returning "icon" ship. No details were confirmed at the time of writing.

FAQ

Is Elite Dangerous free to play? No. The base game is paid. Odyssey content (on-foot, new ships, Operations) requires owning Odyssey on PC. Arx is the premium currency for cosmetics and early-access ship packages.

What's the best first ship upgrade? The Cobra Mk III is the classic multi-role pick; the Adder or Type-6 for early hauling; the Viper Mk III for early combat.

How do I make money fast as a beginner? Exobiology and mission stacking are the most reliable early routes. Mining becomes lucrative once you have a medium ship with a refinery.

Do I need a HOTAS? No. Keyboard and mouse is highly precise. A HOTAS adds immersion, not an advantage.

Can I play solo? Yes. Solo mode shares the same galaxy, economy, and progress.

How does the Rhino compare to the Scarab SRV? The Rhino is a heavy utility SRV with a refinery, deposit scanner, and mining rigs, plus seats for three. The Scarab remains the light SRV for general surface driving and material gathering.
