EA SPORTS FIFA 21: Offline Guide (Servers Closed, Delisted)

A guide to what still works in FIFA 21 on PC in 2026, and how to get the most out of it: offline modes, Career Mode, gameplay fundamentals and settings.

Researched September 2026. FIFA 21's online servers are shut down and the game is no longer sold on Steam. Everything below assumes offline play. Check the linked sources if something differs.

Status at a glance

Quick Start

  1. Treat FIFA 21 as an offline football game. Kick-Off, Career Mode, Skill Games, tournaments and local House Rules are what's left.
  2. Career Mode is the main event. FIFA 21 overhauled it with interactive match sim, a new training/sharpness system and more transfer options.
  3. Launch the EA app first and sign in while you're online. The Steam version needs a linked EA account. After that, the offline modes are what you'll play.
  4. Don't buy FIFA Points. Ultimate Team is offline with the servers, and any leftover currency has nothing to spend it on.
  5. Learn the core defending controls. Jockey plus containment wins more balls than sliding tackles.
  6. Use Skill Games to learn mechanics. They're the built-in tutorial for dribbling, passing, shooting and set pieces.
  7. Set up a controller. DualShock 4 and Xbox controllers are supported. The game is built around a pad.
  8. Kick-Off with House Rules (Survival, No Rules and the others) is the best couch-party mode.

What Still Works and What Doesn't

Mode Status offline
Kick-Off (local matches) Works
House Rules (Survival, No Rules, etc.) Works locally
Career Mode: Manager Works
Career Mode: Player Works
Skill Games Works
Tournaments (offline) Works
VOLTA Football story ("The Debut") May need EA servers; expect it to be unreliable
VOLTA Squads Gone (online-only)
FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT), including Squad Battles Gone (server-based)
Online Seasons / Friendlies / Pro Clubs Gone
Squad updates / live form Frozen at the final update

If a mode on this list won't load, it's almost certainly server-dependent. There's no fix, because the servers are gone.

What's in the Game

Per the Steam store description, FIFA 21 ships with 17,000+ players, over 700 teams, 90+ stadiums and more than 30 leagues. Licensed competitions for Career Mode include the UEFA Champions League, CONMEBOL Libertadores, Premier League, LaLiga Santander and Bundesliga. All of it is frozen at the game's final 2020/21 squad data.

Choosing a Career Mode club with frozen rosters: because squads and player ratings never update, the "wonderkids" in FIFA 21 are the 2020/21 crop. Community potential lists from that season still apply exactly, which makes FIFA 21 a stable sandbox for long saves: nothing will shift under you.

Getting It Running in 2026

  1. Install from your Steam library (the store page no longer sells it, but owners keep access).
  2. Install and sign in to the EA app when prompted. The store page states you must link your EA and Steam accounts and that an internet connection and EA account are required.
  3. Launch once while online so the account link and any first-run checks complete, then stick to the offline modes listed below.
  4. If it hangs on a connecting screen, back out and pick an offline mode from the main menu; server-dependent menus won't recover.
  5. Plug in the controller before launch. DualShock 4 and Xbox controllers are supported per the store page.

Core Controls (Default Gamepad)

Action Xbox PlayStation
Short pass / header A Cross
Lobbed pass / cross X Square
Through ball Y Triangle
Shoot B Circle
Finesse shot RB + B R1 + Circle
Sprint RT R2
Skill moves Right stick Right stick
Jockey LT L2
Contain A (hold) Cross (hold)
Teammate contain RB (hold) R1 (hold)
Standing tackle B Circle
Slide tackle X Square

Timed finishing: press shoot, then press it again as the player strikes the ball. Get the timing right and the shot is far more accurate; get it wrong and it's worse. It's a gamble, so practise in Skill Games.

FIFA 21 Gameplay Features

Career Mode Deep Dive

FIFA 21's Career Mode was the most substantial update in years:

Interactive Match Sim

Simulate a match while watching a live tracker. You can jump in at any point to play the rest yourself, or make subs and tactical changes while you watch. Use it to sim easy games and take control when a match gets tight.

Training and sharpness

Players now have match sharpness, which you build through training sessions and minutes played. Plan weekly training: heavy sessions raise sharpness but use fitness, so rotate your squad. Sharp players perform above their base rating.

Career Mode tips

  1. Pick a realistic club for your first save. A mid-table team with a good academy is the most rewarding.
  2. Check the board's objectives. They affect your job security and budget.
  3. Rotate. Fitness and sharpness make a full-season XI grind down.
  4. Sim cup ties against weak teams with interactive sim, and play the big league games yourself.
  5. Scout young players with high potential. Growth is where Career Mode value comes from.

Player Career

Create a pro or pick an existing player and play only as them. Tips:

VOLTA Football

VOLTA is small-sided street football on 20+ playgrounds with a custom avatar. Its story, The Debut, is the sequel to FIFA 20's VOLTA story and features football legends as managers. VOLTA Squads (online matchmaking with up to 3 friends or the community) died with the servers. Treat the story as a bonus if it loads for you; don't buy the game for it.

House Rules (Kick-Off)

Local party variants, including Survival (a player is removed from the scoring team after each goal) and No Rules (no fouls, offsides or cards). They're good for introducing new players and for couch sessions.
