This guide covers the PC Complete Edition of Dynasty Warriors 8 with Xtreme Legends: the combat systems that actually matter (affinity, Storm Rush, Switch Counter, Rage), how to approach Story, Free, Ambition and Challenge modes, unlocking hypothetical routes, and getting the 44 Steam achievements.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC patch (7 March 2019 update). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Status: this is a finished, single-player/local game. KOEI TECMO's last PC patch was on 7 March 2019 (crash and controller-detection fixes). The PC version has no online multiplayer, but it does support local shared/split-screen co-op, which also works through Steam Remote Play Together.

| Roster | 80+ playable characters across Wei, Wu, Shu, Jin and Other |
| DLC on Steam | Around 21 separate packs (costumes, scenarios and so on); not included unless listed in your purchase |
| Achievements | 44 Steam achievements |
The five characters added by Xtreme Legends are Chen Gong, Fa Zheng, Lu Lingqi, Yu Jin and Zhu Ran. There's an achievement ("New Friends") for clearing a stage with all five, so you'll use them anyway.
The Warriors formula hasn't changed. You have a normal attack string, and pressing the charge attack button at different points in that string gives different charge attacks. You also have a jump, a guard and a Musou (special) attack that spends Musou gauge. Some characters have EX attacks that come off particular points in the combo. There's an achievement, "Attack Ace", for beating an officer with EX Attack 1 and EX Attack 2 in the same battle.
Every character has three Musou attack types, and all three unlock as the character progresses: a standing Musou, an aerial Musou and an alternate one.
| Your weapon | Strong against | Weak against |
|---|---|---|
| Heaven | Earth | Man |
| Earth | Man | Heaven |
| Man | Heaven | Earth |
The affinity icon shows above an enemy officer's health bar. What happens in each matchup:
When an officer attacks and you have the disadvantage, switch weapons as the heavy hit comes in. You'll avoid the blow, knock the officer back and come out holding the other weapon. That's why your second weapon should be the affinity that beats your first weapon's weakness. For example, if your main weapon is Heaven (weak to Man), carry an Earth weapon, because Earth beats Man.
Rage fills as you fight and take hits. Activating it raises your stats, merges your Musou bars into one and refills it automatically while Rage lasts. Using a Musou during Rage gives you the character's powerful Rage Musou finisher. Good times to pop it:
Weapons come in star/quality tiers and can carry attributes (elemental and utility effects such as Flame, Ice, Lightning, Slash or Absorb). In Ambition Mode and the shops you can fuse weapons to move attributes onto your favourite weapon. There's an achievement ("First Fusion") for doing it the first time.
Rules of thumb:
Crates and defeated enemies drop healing food, Musou-refilling items and temporary buffs (attack, defence, speed). On harder difficulties, save healing drops for when you really need them: step past them and come back later.
Each faction story is a string of historical battles. You pick from a few officers per stage, and the objectives change depending on who you play. At certain key battles the story branches between a historical path and a hypothetical path. You reach the hypothetical path by completing the extra conditions that show up during those battles, which usually means saving an officer who dies in history or taking a key point before a scripted event.
Xtreme Legends adds Lu Bu's story and a set of new hypothetical scenarios. There are achievements for clearing every XL stage ("Victory Call"), every XL hypothetical ("Crossroads"), every XL goal ("Goal Getter") and every XL stage on Ultimate ("Ultimate Warrior").
Story tips
Free Mode lets you replay any unlocked stage with any unlocked character, including on the opposing side. Use it to:
Ambition Mode is the long-haul mode. The base game had you building the Tongquetai tower to invite Emperor Xian. Xtreme Legends reworked it into campaign play across regions: you fight a sequence of battles in an area, raise its subjugation rate, recruit officers and grow your forces.
Key systems:
| System | What it does |
|---|---|
| Battle types | Skirmishes (materials), raids (fame) and large-scale battles (recruit officers) |
| Bodyguards | Officers who follow you into battle. You can strengthen them and order them to use battle skills |
| Leadership | Officers have a leadership level. Raising one to the maximum unlocks "Famous Commander" |
| Campaigns | Clearing areas and reaching 100% subjugation drives most of the Ambition achievements |
Ambition tips
Challenge Mode is arcade-style and scored, and it gives customizable weapons as rewards based on your score. It has five courses, each with its own "rank #1" achievement:
| Course | What it's about | Achievement |
|---|---|---|
| Rampage | K.O. as many enemies as you can within the limit | Rampage Master |
| Speed Run | Reach the goal as fast as possible | Speed Run Master |
| Inferno | Scored course with its own rule set (read the briefing) | Inferno Master |
| Arena | Scored combat course (read the briefing) | Arena Master |
| Bridge Melee | Knock enemies off a bridge | Bridge Melee Master |
"Martial Arts Master" is for ranking #1 in all five. Your rank is shown after each run, so retry a course until you top it. Build a character with high speed and wide sweeping attacks for Rampage, and fast movement for Speed Run.
Ultimate is the hardest setting. It's needed for several achievements: finishing a stage in under two minutes ("Lightning Speed"), killing 1,000 enemies in one battle ("Mighty Warrior"), finishing a stage without taking damage ("Matchless Warrior") and clearing every XL stage ("Ultimate Warrior").
Suggested order:
| Type | Examples |
|---|---|
| Cumulative | "Golden Dream" (100,000 gold total), "Carnage" (100,000 K.O.s total) |
| Character growth | "Seasoned Veteran" (an officer at max level), "Famous Commander" (max leadership) |
| Skill screen | Crossed Pike, War Trident, Art of War Scroll, Woven Cloth and Flame Bow "Expert" achievements (open the Equip Skills screen after learning each skill) |
| Gallery | "Story Buff", "Wallpaper Compiler", "Event Aficionado", "Movie Maven", "Musou Collector" (all secondary special weapons) |
| Completion | "Total Unifier" (unite all lands in Ambition Mode), "True Warrior of the 3 Kingdoms" (everything) |
The cumulative gold and K.O. counters fill up naturally. Don't grind for them on their own.
Does the PC version have online co-op? No. The Windows version has no online multiplayer. It supports local split-screen co-op, which you can play online with a friend through Steam Remote Play Together.
Is Xtreme Legends included, or is it DLC? The Complete Edition includes both the base Dynasty Warriors 8 content and Xtreme Legends. The separate cosmetic and scenario packs on the store are extra.
How do I unlock hypothetical stages? Meet the special conditions shown during key Story battles. They're usually rescues or objectives captured before a set time, and they send the story down the "what if" branch.
What's the hardest difficulty? Ultimate. Several achievements need it, so build a character before you try.
Who are the new Xtreme Legends characters? Chen Gong, Fa Zheng, Lu Lingqi, Yu Jin and Zhu Ran.
Why do my saves disappear after changing language? Saves are grouped by language family (EN/FR/DE, Chinese, Japanese). Switch back to your original group to see them again.
Should I play this or Dynasty Warriors: Origins? They're different games. Origins (released January 2025) follows a single original protagonist with a new combat system. DW8 XL is the big-roster, classic-style entry.
