A practical guide to the Steam edition of Dwarf Fortress: picking an embark, your first year's build order, food and drink, industry chains, keeping dwarves happy, defense, and the threats that end most forts, plus what the 2026 patches changed.
Researched September 2026 — current as of patch 53.16 (August 5, 2026). The Myth & Magic update is in development and not yet released. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
| Feature | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Trees | Wood for beds, barrels, bins, charcoal |
| Soil or sand layers | Farms and glass-making |
| Water (brook or river) | Drinking water, wells, hospital needs |
| Mountain or hill | Easy to dig into and defend |
| No aquifer | Aquifers flood digging; beginners should avoid heavy ones |
| Calm/neutral biome | Fewer undead, evil weather and savage wildlife |
| Flux stone (limestone, marble, etc.) | Needed later for steel |
| Iron ore (hematite, magnetite, limonite) | Weapons and armor |
The embark screen shows biome, aquifer and surrounding info. Play Now gives you a standard loadout. Prepare Carefully lets you trade skills and items; spare points are best spent on a pick, an axe, extra food and booze, and skilled Miners, Carpenters and a Grower.
A simple, reliable opening. Adjust to your site.
By the end of year one you want: steady food and drink, everyone in a bedroom, a working trade setup and a basic militia.
Appoint these through the nobles/positions menu as early as your population allows:
| Position | Why you want it |
|---|---|
| Manager | Enables work orders (the main automation tool); wants a meager office |
| Bookkeeper | Accurate stock counts, which work-order conditions rely on; wants a meager office |
| Broker | Handles trading at the depot |
| Chief Medical Dwarf | Hospital diagnosis and treatment |
| Militia Commander | Commands squads |
| Messenger | Diplomatic missions from the world screen (greatly expanded in 53.13) |
Later arrivals such as the mayor, sheriff/captain of the guard and nobility bring demands (rooms, items, mandates). Meeting their room requirements keeps them from souring morale.
| Chain | Buildings and inputs | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Food | Farm plots, Kitchen, Butcher's Shop, Fishery | Meals, a key happiness source |
| Booze | Still plus plants | Drinks for work speed and happiness |
| Wood | Woodcutters, Carpenter's Workshop | Beds, barrels, bins, charcoal |
| Stone | Miners, Mason's Workshop | Furniture, blocks, doors |
| Metal | Smelter, Metalsmith's Forge, fuel (charcoal or coke) or magma | Weapons, armor, tools |
| Steel | Iron plus flux plus fuel | Best mundane weapons and armor |
| Cloth | Farmer's Workshop (plants) or Loom (thread), Clothier's Shop | Clothes; worn-out clothes upset dwarves |
| Leather | Tanner's Shop, Leather Works | Armor, bags, waterskins |
| Glass | Glass Furnace, sand, fuel | Windows, vials, goblets |
Magma is a huge upgrade: magma forges and smelters need no fuel. It is found deep down (magma sea) or in volcanoes.
Once you have a manager, use work orders with conditions (for example, "brew when fewer than a certain number of drinks are in stock") to automate production. A small set of standing orders for booze, meals, barrels and bins removes most micromanagement.
Dwarves remember experiences. Stress builds from bad memories (sleeping on the floor, seeing corpses, rain, bad food, a friend's death) and drops with good ones (fine meals, nice rooms, socializing, worship, hobbies).
Strange moods: occasionally a dwarf claims a workshop to build an artifact. They'll demand specific materials; if they can't get them, they can go insane. Keep a variety of raw materials in stock.
| Threat | What happens | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Tantrum spiral | Unhappy dwarves fight and break things, making others unhappy | Happiness infrastructure, removing corpses, a sheriff and jail |
| Goblin sieges | Armed invasions from hostile civilizations | Choke points, traps, militia, a drawbridge |
| Megabeasts (dragons, hydras, rocs) | Attacks attracted by your wealth | Trapped entrances, a strong militia, sealing up |
| Forgotten beasts | Unique cavern monsters, some with deadly syndromes | Keep caverns sealed until prepared |
| Werebeasts and vampires | Infections and killers inside the fort | Watch for suspicious deaths; justice system |
| Flooding or magma | Digging into aquifers, rivers or magma | Check the tile before digging, dig carefully |
| Miasma | Rotting food and corpses indoors | Refuse stockpiles, good storage, burial |
| Starvation and dehydration | Food or drink run out | Work orders and stock checks |
| Patch | Date | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 53.11 | March 2026 | Good food thoughts easier to get; dwarves seek better meals; stability fixes |
| 53.12 | April 2026 | Standing orders to auto-accept or reject petitions; warm/damp stone warning toggles; trade menu improvements; squad disband confirmation |
| 53.13 | May 2026 | Messenger diplomacy missions |
| 53.14 | May 2026 | Crash fix for announcements |
| 53.15 | June 2026 | Dino Update: 100 extinct animals and matching animal people (new world required, frequency options) |
| 53.16 | August 2026 | Tavern over-drinking fix, dinosaurs grow slower, visiting scholars stop taking your books, other fixes |
Myth & Magic is the next major update and is still in development as of September 2026. Don't expect wizards in your current saves yet.
Is the Steam version different from the free classic version? It's the same simulation with a graphical tileset, mouse-driven interface, tutorials and music. Bay 12 also maintains a free classic ASCII version.
Do I need a new world for the dinosaurs? Yes. The 100 extinct animals from patch 53.15 need a newly generated world. The animal-people graphics update works in old saves.
When is Myth & Magic coming out? The developers haven't announced a release date as of September 2026. Kitfox said it would show a first look at Myth & Magic gameplay at Gamescom in late August 2026.
Why won't my dwarves drink or eat? Check stockpiles and access: food or drink might be forbidden, in a blocked area, or claimed by a job. Also check that you actually have drink in stock.
How do I stop a tantrum spiral? Deal with the source (corpses, a lack of rooms, bad food), give dwarves social and religious spaces, and use the justice system to jail violent dwarves.
What's a good second fort challenge? Try an aquifer embark, a savage or evil biome, or a site with no trees.
