Dungeon Defenders II: Complete Guide

A current guide to Dungeon Defenders II in 2026: how the tower-defense and action layers fit together, heroes and defenses, the progression ladder into Chaos and Onslaught, gear and shards, and what the 2026 updates (The Golden Crusade and The Harvest Moon Festival) added.

Researched September 2026 — current as of The Harvest Moon Festival update (10 September 2026) and its hotfix (16 September 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. You defend Eternia Crystals. Each map has one or more crystals and lanes the Old Ones' army walks down. Build defenses in the Build Phase, then fight in the Combat Phase. Lose all the crystals and you lose the wave.
  2. Defense Units (DU) are your build budget. Every defense costs DU and Mana. DU is split evenly between players in co-op, so coordinate who builds where.
  3. You don't have to play only one hero. You can swap between heroes on your deck, even mid-map, and the defenses from every hero stay on the field. Most good builds mix defenses from three or four heroes.
  4. Start with the four originals. The Squire, Apprentice, Huntress and Monk teach you the fundamentals (blockades, towers, traps, auras) and are all still viable.
  5. Your defense stats matter more than your hero stats on most builders. Stack Defense Power, Defense Health and Defense Attack Rate on gear for the heroes whose towers you use.
  6. Shards are the build. Shards socket into gear and change how defenses and abilities behave. Equipment is the frame; shards are the engine.
  7. Follow the difficulty ladder. Campaign, then Hard, Insane and Nightmare, then the Chaos tiers. Each step drops better gear.
  8. Use Find My Item and the shard vault. Recent hotfixes made them much more useful (claim-all mailbox, selling and disenchanting straight from the vault).
  9. Catch seasonal events. The Harvest Moon Festival is running now, with a limited-time map (The Royal Tavern) and event rewards.

Core Loop

Phase What you do Tips
Build Phase Place, upgrade and repair defenses; set up hero loadouts Build blockades at chokepoints, then damage towers behind them. Don't forget air lanes
Combat Phase Fight alongside your defenses, repair, pick up loot Watch the minimap for lane breaks. Kill the priority enemies (see below)
Between maps Tavern and town: gear, shards, upgrades, crafting Sort loot often and upgrade your best pieces

Priority enemies

Heroes

The original four

Hero Role Signature defenses
Squire Tank / builder Spike Blockade (the classic wall), Cannonball Tower, Ballista (anti-air)
Apprentice Mage / builder Flameburst Tower, Arcane Barrier, Earthshatter Tower, Frostbite Tower
Huntress Ranger / builder Explosive Trap, Poison Dart Tower, Geyser Trap
Monk Support / builder Lightning Aura, Boost Aura, Serpent's Coil, Skyguard Tower

New hero abilities (Harvest Moon Festival, September 2026)

The Squire, Huntress and Apprentice each lost their generic Heal ability and got a new signature one in its place:

Hero New ability What it does
Squire Wounded Pride Heals and gains a damage boost that's bigger the lower his health was when cast
Huntress Adrenaline Rush Increased damage, movement speed and jump height, plus healing over time
Apprentice Overcharge Empowers attacks so every hit deals increased damage

The same update raised the Monk's Pole Smash damage by 70% and let it be cast while moving. New shards support the abilities: Overcharge Power (bigger Overcharge boost) and Second Wind (Adrenaline Rush restores Mana over 8 seconds).

The Templar (The Golden Crusade, June 2026)

The newest hero is a golden paladin built around the Gilded debuff, which turns enemies to gold so they take increased damage.

Ability Effect
Shield Bash Frontal area damage; enemies hit become Gilded
Divine Judgment Ground slam plus a lingering zone that damages enemies; allies inside take reduced damage
Smite A pillar of mystical fire at a target spot. Damages enemies over time and heals nearby allies
Aegis Shield Three golden shields around the Templar and nearby allies: damage reduction and healing over time
Defense Type Notes
Midas Trap Trap Pressure rune; enemies caught are transmuted to gold and take increased damage. A hotfix stopped it damaging other defenses
Golden Knight Armor Blockade Very durable animated armour
Anti-Air Cannon Anti-air Only targets flying enemies, at extreme range
Divine Relic Damage A hotfix fixed its damage type so it no longer triggers hero-damage effects

Other heroes on the roster include the Abyss Lord, Series EV2, Lavamancer, Dryad, Mystic, Gunwitch, Adept and Initiate, each with their own defenses and synergies.

Progression Ladder

Stage Goal
Campaign Learn maps, unlock heroes, reach max level
Hard / Insane / Nightmare Farm gear with good defense stats; start shard collecting
Chaos tiers The main endgame ladder. Each tier needs more item power and drops better gear and shards. The top tiers run into double digits
Onslaught An endless floor-by-floor climb. Since Hotfix 5 (14 July 2026), loot depends directly on your floor number, not your Power Rating, with capped drop enhancements (default 6/10)
Elemental Rumble Special variants with elemental enemies. The Golden Crusade added Golden and Poison elements and matching gear sets (Golden Set, Poison Set)
Mastery Per-map challenges for extra rewards and progression
Ancient Power Resets part of your progression in exchange for permanent power points. The main long-term account progression
Incursions Special map variants with their own objectives and rewards

FAQ

Is Dungeon Defenders II still updated in 2026? Yes. The Golden Crusade (23 June 2026) added the Templar, two Promenade maps (Promenade Golden Dawn and Promenade Nightfall) and a new Airship and Goblin Mech boss. The Harvest Moon Festival followed on 10 September 2026.

Is it free to play? Yes, the base game is free on Steam, with optional paid content.

Who's the best starting hero? The Squire or the Apprentice. Both have simple, strong defenses and teach blockade and tower placement.

How do I get to the Royal Tavern? Use the event doors in the Tavern and Town. It isn't selectable from the War Table.

What replaced Heal? The Squire, Huntress and Apprentice now have Wounded Pride, Adrenaline Rush and Overcharge respectively.

Why did my Onslaught drops change in July 2026? Hotfix 5 tied Onslaught loot to your current floor number rather than Power Rating, matched Chaos tier tags to the floor, and capped drop enhancement (default 6/10). This fixed tier mismatches and drops arriving already maxed out.
