Dungeon Defenders: Complete Guide

A complete guide to the original Dungeon Defenders (2011), which is still actively patched by Chromatic Games in 2026: classes and their defenses, build-phase strategy, stat allocation, gear and mana, difficulties and game modes, the current DLC heroes, and what recent patches changed.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Patch 10.9.1 "Samurai Guardian" (September 22, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Protect the Eternia Crystal. Each map has one or more crystals. If enemies destroy one, you lose the wave. Everything else is secondary.
  2. Two phases. In the Build Phase you place defenses with mana; in the Combat Phase you fight alongside them. Build phases give you time to plan; ready up only when your lanes are set.
  3. Defense Units (DU) cap your defenses. Each map has a DU limit; blockades and towers cost DU and mana. Spend DU where lanes converge.
  4. Hold choke points, not the crystal. Stop enemies at chokes far from the crystal so you have time to repair.
  5. Blockade, then damage. A blockade (Squire or Apprentice) stops enemies in front of damage towers, traps and auras.
  6. Repair and upgrade between waves. Mana spent upgrading towers is usually better than building new ones once you hit your DU cap.
  7. Bank your mana. Store overflow in the Mana Bank in the Tavern; it is also spent to level up gear.
  8. Level every class a little. Multi-hero builds (building with one hero, fighting with another) are standard; the tavern lets you swap characters.
  9. Play Ranked or Open, not both for one character. Ranked characters are protected from modified items; Ranked and Open characters are kept separate.
  10. Co-op makes everything easier. Up to four players online or split-screen; drop-in, drop-out.

The Four Base Classes

Class Playstyle Defenses
Apprentice Ranged mage Magic Missile Tower, Fireball Tower, Lightning Tower, Deadly Striker Tower, Magic Blockade
Squire Melee tank Spiked Blockade, Harpoon Tower, Bouncer Blockade, Bowling Ball Turret, Slice N Dice Blockade
Huntress Ranged, stealthy Proximity Mine Trap, Gas Trap, Inferno Trap, Darkness Trap, Ethereal Spike Trap
Monk Melee/support Ensnare Aura, Electric Aura, Healing Aura, Strength Drain Aura, Enrage Aura

What Each Class Brings

DLC Heroes

Beyond the base four, the 2011 New Heroes DLC adds gender-swapped variants of the base classes (Adept, Countess, Initiate, Ranger) and the 8-player Uber Monster Fest challenge. Other hero DLCs:

Hero Notes
Series EV Beams and reflect walls; reflect walls now show projectiles reflected on the tooltip (10.9.0)
Summoner Commands minions instead of placing normal towers; mage minions heal
Jester Random and quirky defenses
Barbarian Pure combat hero, dual-wields melee weapons (DLC from January 2012)
Guardian Chromatic-era hero (Steam DLC dated February 19, 2026) with 5 defenses and 2 abilities; Divine Judgement was toned down in 10.8.3
Warden Chromatic-era forest-spirit hero (Steam DLC dated August 26, 2025)
Gunwitch Newer Chromatic-era hero
Hermit Newer Chromatic-era hero

The August 2026 dev diary says a new hero that ties in with Dungeon Defenders II is coming later in 2026, plus anime-style skins (Retro Mecha EV and Samurai Guardian are out; Warden and Summoner skins are next).

Stats and Leveling

Every character and item has hero and tower stats. You spend points from levels and from upgrading items.

Stat Affects
Hero Health Your survival
Hero Speed Movement
Hero Damage Weapon damage
Hero Casting Rate Build/upgrade/repair speed
Ability 1 / Ability 2 Class abilities
Tower Health Defense durability
Tower Attack Rate How fast defenses fire
Tower Damage Defense damage
Tower Range Defense reach (or aura radius)

Allocation rule of thumb: builder characters dump nearly everything into tower stats (Damage first for most towers, Health for blockades, Range for auras). Your combat hero dumps into Hero Health and Hero Damage. Casting Rate on the builder makes repairs fast.

Because defenses use the stats of the hero who placed them, you usually build with your tower-stat hero and then switch to a combat hero.

Build Strategy Fundamentals

A Standard Lane

  1. Blockade at the choke (Squire Spiked Blockade or Apprentice Magic Blockade).
  2. Ensnare Aura on the blockade so enemies slow down while stacked.
  3. Electric Aura or Huntress traps on the same spot to damage the whole group.
  4. Damage towers behind (Apprentice Lightning, Deadly Striker; Squire Harpoon, Bowling Ball).
  5. Healing Aura behind the lane where you fight.

Enemy Types to Plan For

Enemy Threat Counter
Goblins, Orcs, Skeletons Standard melee Blockade and aura stack
Archers and Dark Elf mages Shoot towers from range Long-range towers, or clear them yourself
Kobolds Suicide bombers that target defenses Kill early with traps and range
Ogres Huge health, heavy hits Strength Drain, high damage towers, combat hero
Djinn Disable defenses Priority target for your combat hero
Flyers (Wyverns and similar) Ignore ground lanes Harpoon, Magic Missile, Lightning towers, or hero damage
Spiders Web heroes Stay mobile, kill them early

Wave Economy

Gear, Pets and Mana

Difficulties and Modes

Difficulty Notes
Easy, Medium Learning maps
Hard, Insane Where real gear drops start
Nightmare Classic endgame difficulty; deadly enemies
Ruthless Chromatic-era difficulty that raises map-specific challenge; recent patches keep tuning it (for example forced blocking percentages in 10.9.0)

Modes include Campaign (a set number of waves per map, with bosses on certain maps), Challenges, Survival (endless waves; since 10.8.4 a configurable starting wave, default 22, which persists), Pure Strategy (no fighting, towers only), Mix Mode, and Hardcore (no respawns, better rewards). There is also PvP.

The campaign runs from The Deeper Well to The Summit, and a large number of extra maps come from DLC mission packs such as Quest for the Lost Eternia Shards, Karathiki Jungle, City in the Cliffs and Talay Mining Complex, plus Chromatic-era additions such as Etheria's Primordial Palm and Boss Rush II (December 2025).

FAQ

Is Dungeon Defenders 1 still being updated? Yes. Chromatic Games ships frequent patches in 2026, the latest being 10.9.1 on September 22, 2026, and a new hero is planned.

Which class should a beginner start with? Squire for survivability and easy blockades, or Apprentice if you want strong towers. Level a Monk soon after for auras.

Ranked or Open? Ranked for the protected online economy; Open for local play or mods. Pick one per character.

Is DD1 better than DD2 or Awakened? They are different games. DD1 has the largest map pool and the classic feel; Awakened is the modernized sequel.

Can I play solo? Yes, but it is designed for co-op. Solo players rely heavily on multi-hero building.

Do the DLC heroes matter? They are optional, but several are strong and offer different builds.
