Dota 2 — Climbing Out of Low MMR: Lanes, Map, Roles and Objectives

Dota 2 · Patch 7.41 (latest 7.41f) · Updated Sept 2026

Low-MMR games aren't lost to a lack of mechanics. They're lost to the same few habits: people fighting when they should farm, farming when they should push, walking into fog, and losing a won game because nobody touched a tower. Fix those habits and you'll climb on almost any hero. This guide sticks to the fundamentals that hold up patch after patch, with the few map details that changed in 7.41 called out where they matter.

Returning after a break? Facets are gone as of 7.41, and innate abilities now either give a fixed bonus or scale with hero level instead of with your other skills. Heroes play more like their base kits again, so you can skip the facet research and read the hero's tooltips instead.

1. The laning stage decides more than you think

The first 10 minutes set your item timings for the rest of the game. A carry who goes 40 last hits at 10 minutes instead of 20 is effectively one big item ahead, and that gap usually grows from there.

Last hits and denies

Creep equilibrium: where the wave meets matters

The spot where the two creep waves fight is the equilibrium. You want it slightly on your side of the river, close to your tower:

How to control it:

7.41 also nudged the lane creep meeting points toward the offlane, with temporary creep speed adjustments that run until the 7:30 mark. The principle is the same; just don't expect the first clash to happen where it used to.

Pulling (for supports)

A pull means hitting a neutral camp at the right moment and walking away so the neutrals chase you into your own lane creeps. The creeps then fight the neutrals instead of the enemy wave. It does three things:

  1. Your lane creeps die out of lane, so the enemy wave pushes toward your tower (good equilibrium).
  2. The enemy core loses that whole wave of gold and experience.
  3. Your side collects the neutral gold and XP instead.

Timing depends on the camp and your walking path. Neutrals respawn at the top of each minute, so pulls happen at a fixed second mark each minute. Find the timing for your safe-lane small camp in a demo lobby once; it doesn't change mid-game. A double pull (stack the camp at around xx:53, then pull the stacked camp) buries even more creeps.

Don't over-pull. If the lane is already under your tower, a pull will drag it into the enemy's tower range next wave, which is the opposite of what you want. Pull when the lane is at the midpoint or pushing toward the enemy.

When to trade hits

Harass the enemy when they walk up to last-hit. Their attack is committed to the creep, and creeps only aggro onto you when you hit a hero, so step back right after. If you hit a hero and their creeps start chasing you, you just traded HP for nothing. Watch the enemy's mana and their key spell cooldowns. The moment their stun or nuke is down is your window.

2. Map awareness and vision

At low MMR a lot of deaths come from walking into fog with no information. The fix is a habit, not a talent.

Warding basics

Wards are cheap and win games. You don't need pro spots, just the right idea:

SituationWhat to wardWhy
Laning (defensive)The river/rune approach and the paths gankers use to your laneSee rotations early and protect your cores
Laning (offensive)Near the enemy's pull camp or side of the laneDeny pulls, spot their support leaving
You're aheadDeeper into enemy jungle, near their farming routesFind pickoffs and choke their farm
You're behindYour own jungle entrances and high groundFarm safely and see pushes coming
Before an objectiveAround Roshan or the Tormentor, before you commitFights at objectives go to whoever has vision

3. Roles: what positions 1–5 actually do

Most low-MMR games have two people trying to be the carry and nobody playing support. Know your job:

PosRoleLaneMain jobCommon mistake
1Carry (hard carry)Safe laneFarm efficiently, become the strongest hero lateJoining every fight at 12 minutes with no items
2MidMid laneWin the solo lane, then make plays around the map with a level/item leadStaying in mid forever and never rotating
3OfflaneOff lanePressure the enemy carry, survive, be the frontline initiatorDying repeatedly in lane to "pressure"
4Soft supportOff lane (roams)Harass, gank, stack camps, contest runes, make spaceTaking farm from cores
5Hard supportSafe laneProtect the carry, pull, ward, buy utility itemsLeaving the carry alone to die at 3 minutes
More on the core roles (pos 1–3)

Carry: Your job is gold per minute. Clear the lane, then a jungle camp, then the next wave. Show up to fights you're sure about, and to fights at objectives near you. If you're not fighting, you should be farming a lane on your side of the map.

Mid: You get the solo XP lead, so use it. Watch rune timings, push your wave before you leave mid, and rotate to a side lane when their hero is low or overextended. Keep the enemy mid's position in mind for your team.

Offlane: You're often in the hardest lane. Getting levels and not dying counts as a win. After laning you're the one who starts fights and soaks spells, so build durability and team items when the game calls for it.

More on the support roles (pos 4–5)

Pos 4: Help your offlaner early, then look for kills in other lanes when the enemy overextends. Stack camps for your carry and mid. Contest bounty runes.

Pos 5: Stay with your carry in lane, pull, deny, and keep vision up. Buy the team's utility: wards, sentries, smoke, and the defensive items that save your cores.

Both: Don't last-hit when a core is nearby. Supports that die a lot while warding are fine; supports that die farming aren't.

4. Farming patterns after the laning stage

When lanes break up, your gold income depends on moving efficiently. Idle time is the enemy.

5. When to group (and when not to)

Grouping isn't good or bad. It depends on your plan. Ask one question: what are we grouping to take?

Group up when…Split up / farm when…
You've just won a fight or they're missing heroes: go hit a buildingYou're behind and fighting 5v5 means losing
Your lineup is strong at this time of the game and theirs isn't yetYour carry needs items to matter and the enemy isn't pushing
An objective is up: Roshan, Tormentor, a tower you can takeThe enemy is grouped and you can't fight them: push the opposite lane instead
The enemy is pushing your towersThere's no objective and no vision. You'd just be walking around in fog as a group
The low-MMR trap: five heroes walking mid, hitting nothing, getting caught one by one. If you're grouped, you should be pushing a wave into a tower or setting up vision for an objective. Otherwise, go farm.

Also: after winning a fight, take something. A tower, Roshan, the Tormentor, or at the very least a free stack of enemy jungle. Kills that don't turn into objectives just give the enemy gold back later.

6. Objectives: what actually wins games

You win by destroying the Ancient, not by getting kills. Buildings give your whole team gold and open up the map.
