Dorfromantik: Complete Guide

How tiles, quests and scoring actually work in Dorfromantik, plus a high-score strategy, mode breakdown, achievement tips and the mistakes that end runs early.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Patch 1.2.3 (July 2026) and the September 2026 Monthly Challenge ("Industry"). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. The stack is your life bar. The game ends when you run out of tiles, so every decision is really about earning more tiles than you spend.
  2. Quests are the main tile income. Tiles with a quest marker ask you to grow a group (forest, village, field, water, rail) to a target size (some targets are minimums, some are exact counts). Completing them refunds tiles to your stack.
  3. Perfect placements also pay tiles. When a tile completes a hex where all six sides match their neighbors, you get a bonus. Chasing perfects in the early game is how long runs start.
  4. Rivers and rail are strict. River and track edges must connect to matching edges, so those tiles have fewer legal spots. Plan space for them before they show up.
  5. Don't smother quest groups. If you close off a forest that still needs 20 trees, that quest is dead. Keep open edges on any group with an active quest.
  6. Look at the next tile. The UI shows what's coming, so place the current tile with the next one in mind.
  7. Expand in a compact blob. Spread-out, stringy maps produce awkward holes you can never fill perfectly.
  8. Unlocks come from long-term tasks and achievements. New tiles, biomes and quest types appear as you play, so early runs aren't wasted even when they score low.

How Tiles Work

Each hex tile has six edges, and each edge is one land type:

Land type Notes
Forest Scores by tree count; big forests feed many quests
Village Houses; very common quest target
Field (grain) Counts fields; closeable groups for Self-Sufficiency achievements
Water Lakes and rivers. River edges must connect to water
Railroad Track edges must connect to track
Barren / meadow Empty grassland. Flexible filler that matches meadow

A tile can contain anywhere from one to six land types. In a standard run your first tile is a plain grass tile and the stack starts with 40 random tiles. You can only place the top tile, but you can see the top three, so you always have a little lookahead.

Scoring basics

Quests

Quest tiles show a small marker with a land type and a number. The quest is tied to the group that the quest tile belongs to.

Quest priority rules of thumb

  1. Finish quests that are close to done first — they're cheap tiles.
  2. Don't merge two quest groups carelessly: a merged group can overshoot one target while still counting toward another. Know which targets you're chasing.
  3. Keep a "spillway" — open edges on the far side of big groups — so you always have somewhere to put more trees or houses.
  4. Rail and river quests need long lines. Leave the ends of a line pointing at open space.

Special and Preplaced Tiles

As you explore outward you'll run into preplaced tiles on the map — special objects that give long-term tasks. Connecting them (for example by building a matching group to them) completes the task and unlocks new content. The "Explorer" achievements count how many preplaced tiles you've connected, up to 50.

Special quest objects from the store description illustrate the idea: a windmill wants to border a number of grain fields, a locomotive wants to connect to a length of track, and a deer wants a forest with a big tree count. These unlock over time and add new quest types to runs.

Game Modes

Mode What it is Best for
Classic (standard) The core score run: limited stack, quests refund tiles Learning, leaderboards
Quick Mode Short session with a limited number of tiles Coffee breaks
Hard Mode Tougher rules for high-score chasers Players who have mastered Classic
Creative Mode Unlimited tiles, no pressure Building pretty landscapes
Custom Mode Build your own ruleset and share it Experimenting, community challenges
Monthly Mode A new fixed challenge each month Fresh twists, e.g. August 2026 "Big Lake," September 2026 "Industry"

Monthly challenges change the rules noticeably. September 2026's "Industry" leans on a no-trees theme, while August 2026's "Big Lake" had densely filled tiles, higher quest numbers, lots of water and no train tracks. Read the challenge description before you play so you know which group types to prioritize.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Advanced Tips

FAQ

How do I get more tiles? Complete quests and make perfect placements. Those are the only real sources of new tiles in standard runs.

Why can't I place this tile here? River and rail edges must connect to matching edges. If a tile has a river or track, it only fits where those line up.

What does the flag on a quest mean? It's a closing quest: the group needs to be fully enclosed, not just big.

Is Dorfromantik multiplayer? No. The video game is single-player. Competitive and co-op play exist in the board game line (The Board Game, The Duel, Sakura, Light Luggage, plus a South Seas edition and Head to Head announced for 2026).

What platforms is it on? PC (April 2022), Nintendo Switch (September 2022), PlayStation and Xbox (August 2025), and macOS (June 2026).

Is there DLC? Yes — the Medieval Biome Pack, plus two soundtrack volumes.

How do I unlock new biomes and tiles? Complete long-term tasks from preplaced tiles and hit achievement milestones; unlocks carry over between runs.
