Disco Elysium - The Final Cut: Complete Guide

A spoiler-light guide to Disco Elysium - The Final Cut: character creation, skill checks, the Thought Cabinet, money and health management, a day-by-day route for the investigation, missable content and achievement tips.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the December 17, 2025 patch (Unity security fix). The game is complete and no longer gets content updates. Check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. There is no "wrong" build, but there are unfun ones. A lopsided character (one attribute at 5 or 6) produces the funniest, most distinctive runs. Balanced builds are safer but blander.
  2. Failing is content. Many of the best scenes come from failed checks. Don't reload every failure. Save before red checks you care about, though.
  3. White checks can be retried; red checks can't. A white check reopens after you raise the relevant skill or find new information. A red check is a one-time roll.
  4. Talk to Kim Kitsuragi about everything. Your partner is your moral compass, your tutorial and the best character in the game. His approval quietly shapes many scenes.
  5. Money is tight early. You owe money at the Whirling-in-Rags for your room (and for the damage you did while drunk). Collect empty bottles ("tare") and sell them to the Frittte and other stores, and pick up any loot you see.
  6. Clothes are stat gear. Every clothing item changes skills. Swap outfits before important checks.
  7. Time passes with dialogue, not with walking. Clock time advances as you read dialogue lines. Shops close at night and some characters are only around at certain hours.
  8. The Thought Cabinet is a second skill tree. Thoughts take real (in-game) time to internalize and can permanently buff or debuff you.
  9. Keep your Health and Morale up. Either bar hitting zero ends the game. Healing items restore them.
  10. Turn on the full voice acting. The Final Cut voices every line in English; it is part of the experience.

Money

Early money sources that work for any build:

Don't sell unique items you haven't identified as useless. Some unlock quests or thoughts later.

The Thought Cabinet

Thoughts unlock from dialogue and discoveries. You equip a thought into a slot, and it "researches" over a set amount of in-game time (often with a temporary penalty) before internalizing into a permanent effect.

FAQ

Is Disco Elysium - The Final Cut the version to play? Yes. The Final Cut (March 30, 2021) was a free update for existing PC and macOS owners, so on Steam it replaced the original release. It adds full voice acting (over 1.2 million words), four political vision quests and extra content. An Android version adapted as a visual novel followed on August 5, 2025.

Can I fail the game? Yes. Your Health or Morale hitting zero ends it, and a few specific choices and failed checks produce early game-over screens. Save regularly.

How long is it? One playthrough runs roughly 20 to 40 hours depending on how much side content you pursue.

Does it have combat? Not in the usual sense. Fights and dangerous moments are resolved through dialogue and skill checks.

What is the best starting build? For a first run, the Sensitive or Thinker archetypes are the most forgiving and show off the dialogue system. Physical builds are fun but can struggle with money and morale.

Is there a sequel? No direct sequel. ZA/UM's next game, ZERO PARADES: For Dead Spies, is a new espionage RPG released on PC in May 2026, with a free Director's Cut update arriving October 1, 2026.
