# DiRT Rally 2.0: Complete Guide

A guide to DiRT Rally 2.0 as it stands in 2026: what still works online after Clubs shut down, how to learn to drive fast without binning the car, pacenotes, setup, career and team management, and which car classes to start with.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of the final game build; Racenet Clubs ended on July 8, 2026 (other online modes remain). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

> **Online status (September 2026):** Per the Steam store notice, **Clubs are no longer available** from **July 8, 2026**, because the website hosting Racenet Clubs was sunset. Trying to open Clubs in-game gives an error. **Time Trial, My Team career events (daily/weekly/monthly), and Quick Play Multiplayer continue to work.** EA's online service updates page is the place to check for further changes.

## Quick Start

1. **Start slow, finish stages.** In rally, a clean run beats a fast crash every time. Damage carries over between stages and repair time at service is limited.
2. **Listen to your co-driver.** Pacenotes describe corners by severity and length. Learning to trust them is the single biggest skill jump.
3. **Begin with a forgiving car.** Front-wheel-drive historic cars (H1) and modern R2/R5 cars are more predictable than Group B monsters or rear-drive classics.
4. **Pick the right camera.** Bonnet or cockpit cam gives better feel than chase cam once you are used to it.
5. **Set up your wheel or pad properly.** Adjust steering linearity and deadzones for a pad; set rotation and force feedback for a wheel before blaming the physics.
6. **Tyre choice matters.** Choose compounds for the surface and weather at each service. Surfaces degrade over the course of an event.
7. **Do the Time Trial and daily events** to practice online without Clubs; they still work in 2026.
8. **Tune later.** The default setups are fine for learning. Change one thing at a time once you know what the car is doing.

## Modes

| Mode | Status (Sept 2026) | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Career (My Team) | Works | Build a team, hire staff, buy cars, enter events and championships |
| Custom Championship / Free Play | Works (offline) | Your own events on any location |
| Time Trial | Works | Single stage leaderboards |
| Daily / Weekly / Monthly events | Works | Community challenges inside My Team |
| Quick Play Multiplayer | Works | Online head-to-head rallycross matchmaking |
| Racenet Clubs | **Discontinued July 8, 2026** | Private community championships |
| Rallycross | Works | Circuit racing against others on mixed surfaces |

## Locations

**Base game rally locations:** New Zealand, Argentina, Spain, Poland, Australia and the USA.

Additional rally locations came through the season content and DLC packs (Germany, Finland, Monte Carlo, Sweden, Wales, Greece and Scotland), so the Game of the Year edition or season passes add a lot of variety.

| Location | Surface character |
|---|---|
| New Zealand | Fast, flowing gravel with big crests |
| Argentina | Rough gravel, rocks, water splashes |
| Spain | Tarmac; precision braking |
| Poland | Fast, narrow forest gravel with jumps |
| Australia | Loose, slippery gravel |
| USA (New England) | Tight tarmac and gravel roads through woodland |

## Driving Fundamentals

### Weight transfer

Rally cars rotate through weight transfer. Brake in a straight line, ease off the brakes as you turn in (trail braking), and let the rear rotate. Lifting off the throttle mid-corner shifts weight forward and can tighten your line, or snap a rear-drive car around.

### Car layouts

| Layout | Behaviour | Technique |
|---|---|---|
| Front-wheel drive | Understeer-prone, stable | Trail brake, use handbrake for hairpins, stay on throttle |
| Rear-wheel drive | Oversteer, power slides | Gentle throttle, counter-steer early, short-shift in low grip |
| Four-wheel drive | Fast, balanced, heavy | Brake early, let the diff pull you through |

### The handbrake

Use it for hairpins and tight junctions, not ordinary bends. In 4WD cars, a long handbrake pull fights the drivetrain and kills momentum; use a quick tap to rotate the car and get straight back on throttle (dipping the clutch with it helps if you drive manual).

### Surfaces and degradation

Gravel stages develop ruts and loose "marbles" off-line as the event progresses. Tarmac can be dusty from cars cutting corners. Rain and wet surfaces drastically reduce grip. Stay on the clean line.

## Pacenotes

Your co-driver calls corners with a number or descriptor for severity (for example 6 is fast, 1 is very slow, plus "hairpin" and "square") and cues like "don't cut", "over crest", "into", "tightens" and "opens". Tips:

- Adjust **pacenote call timing** in the options if calls come too late or too early.
- Pay attention to **"don't cut"** and **"caution"**; they often hide rocks or ditches.
- When learning, drive to the notes, not to what you can see.

## Career and Team Management

- **My Team:** you manage cars, staff, and finances. Enter events to earn credits and reputation.
- **Staff (engineers):** better engineers repair faster at service, and some staff bonuses matter for longer events. Keep your crew's contracts in mind.
- **Service areas:** you get a fixed repair window. Prioritize damage that affects speed and safety (suspension, steering, gearbox) over cosmetic.
- **Buying cars:** start with one competitive car in a single class and win there, rather than buying cheap cars across many classes.
- **Upgrades:** car parts improve reliability and performance as you use them.

## Car Classes to Start With

| Class | Why |
|---|---|
| H1 (FWD) | Slow and forgiving; learn lines and pacenotes |
| R2 | Modern FWD; accessible and fun on gravel |
| F2 Kit Car | Fast FWD; good step up |
| R5 / NR4/R4 | Modern 4WD; forgiving grip, very quick |
| Group A | Classic 4WD rally, e.g. the famous Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Subaru models |
| Group B (RWD/4WD) | Very powerful, twitchy; tackle later |
| H2/H3 RWD | Great for learning car control once comfortable |

The store page highlights cars such as the **VW Polo GTI R5**, **Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X**, **Citroen C3 R5** and the **Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R**.

## Tuning Primer

Change one thing at a time, then drive the same stage again.

| Problem | Try |
|---|---|
| Understeer on corner entry | Softer front anti-roll bar, more rearward brake bias |
| Oversteer on exit (RWD/4WD) | Softer rear springs or anti-roll bar, gentler throttle map/diff |
| Bottoming out on jumps | Raise ride height, stiffen springs or bump damping |
| Car feels nervous at speed | Slightly stiffer setup, less aggressive alignment |
| Running out of gears on straights | Longer final drive |

## Wheel and Controller Settings

- **Wheel:** set your wheel's rotation in its driver software to suit rally cars (roughly 540 to 720 degrees is a common starting range), and avoid force feedback clipping; strong but not maxed is ideal.
- **Controller:** increase steering deadzone slightly, lower steering linearity, and consider reducing steering saturation to avoid snap oversteer.
- **VR:** the game supports VR headsets on PC, but it is demanding; lower settings first.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Driving at 100% on the first stage.** Build a margin.
- **Handbraking every corner.** It scrubs speed in normal bends.
- **Ignoring damage.** A damaged radiator or suspension will end an event.
- **Spending all credits on cars early.** You need staff and repairs too.
- **Starting in Group B.** Learn in FWD/R5 first.
- **Trying to open Clubs.** They are offline since July 8, 2026; use Time Trial or daily events.
- **Skipping pacenote timing settings.**

## Advanced Tips

- **Left-foot braking** helps 4WD cars rotate while staying on throttle.
- **Scandinavian flick:** a quick weight shift away from the corner before turning in sets the car up for tight bends on loose surfaces.
- **Look through the corner,** not at the bonnet; especially important in cockpit view.
- **Short-shift in the wet** to reduce wheelspin.
- **Save setups per location.** A gravel setup that works in Poland may be awful in Argentina.
- **Practice Time Trial on one stage** until you know it, then move on; muscle memory builds faster than random stages.
