# DEVOUR: Survival Guide

How to banish Azazel in DEVOUR, the 1-4 player co-op horror game: core rules, every current map, team roles, difficulty settings, progression, and the habits that get whole lobbies killed.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of the build after the April 14, 2026 revert of patch v6.0.32 (seven maps, with The Carnival the newest; The Apartments announced for 2027). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

## Quick Start

1. **The goal is always the same: destroy ten ritual items.** Each map has its own items (goats, rats, eggs, and more) that must be found, prepared, and burned at the ritual altar.
2. **Your UV flashlight is your only weapon.** It burns fiends (minor enemies) and drains charge as you use it. Collect batteries to recharge.
3. **You cannot kill the possessed cultist (Azazel).** Avoid them, break line of sight, and hide.
4. **Azazel gets faster and angrier with every item you burn.** Early items are easy; the last few are chaos. Plan the final burns.
5. **Split up, but not too far.** Divide tasks (keys, items, batteries), but stay close enough to revive teammates.
6. **Revive downed teammates quickly.** If everyone goes down, the run ends.
7. **Learn one map at a time.** Start with The Farmhouse on Easy and work up.
8. **Talk constantly.** Positional voice chat means you'll hear teammates nearby; call out Azazel's location.
9. **Doors and item spawns are randomised.** No two runs are identical, so keys and items won't always be in the same place.

## Core Mechanics

### The Ritual
- Find ritual items scattered across the map. Some are alive and run away; some need to be prepared before burning.
- Bring each item to the ritual altar and burn it.
- After ten items, Azazel is banished and you win.

### Azazel (the Possessed Cultist)
- Each map has a unique possessed cultist hunting you.
- Azazel's speed and aggression ramp up as you burn more items; more fiends spawn too.
- If Azazel catches you, you're knocked down. Teammates can revive you; if everyone is down, you lose.

### Fiends
- Minor enemies that vary by map (for example the giant spiders on The Inn and the crows on The Manor).
- The UV flashlight burns them. Some carry away or interfere with ritual items.

### Items
| Item | Use |
|---|---|
| UV flashlight | Burns fiends and can briefly stagger the possessed cultist; drains battery |
| Batteries | Recharge the flashlight |
| Medkits | Heal you |
| Keys | Unlock doors; randomised each game |
| Map-specific tools | Fuel, cleaning, bait, and other items needed to prepare ritual objects |

### Hiding and Stealth
- Break line of sight and hide in closets, rooms, or behind obstacles.
- Azazel can hear noise; running and screaming attract attention.
- Some Azazels have unique senses or abilities, so learn each map's behaviour.

## Maps

| Map | Possessed cultist | Setting | Key features |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Farmhouse | Anna | Rural California farm | Goats; the original and easiest map |
| The Asylum | Molly | Large asylum with a basement | Rats; areas at different heights |
| The Inn | Zara | Traditional Japanese guest house | Dirty eggs that must be washed; giant spiders that grab items |
| The Town | Sam | Mercy, a gold rush ghost town and birthplace of the cult | Items prepared in one place and burned in another; Sam is "a quick shot" |
| The Slaughterhouse | Nathan | Abandoned meat factory in Chicago | Claustrophobic; freezer rooms that lock; Nathan uses vents |
| The Manor | See in-game | Classic haunted house | Crows; doll heads that must be cleaned |
| The Carnival | See in-game | Demonic carnival | Newest map, released in autumn 2025 around the Halloween event |

**Coming next**: The Apartments, set in a Brooklyn housing block with Frank, a possessed mob boss, is estimated for 2027 per the June 2026 sneak peek. It's the first DEVOUR map in a big modern city: a rundown multi-storey housing block with individual apartments, a ground-floor shop/cafe, and an outdoor area with alleys and a subway exit. Frank fights with his fists, so expect a very physical Azazel.

## Map Tips

### The Farmhouse
- Learn the layout: the house, barn, and outdoor ritual area.
- Goats wander; herd or carry them to the altar.
- Azazel is at her calmest before the first burn; use those early minutes to grab keys and batteries.

### The Asylum
- Multiple floors and a basement make navigation hard; memorise stairwells.
- Fiends pile up in the narrow corridors; keep UV charged.
- Molly can't be locked behind the basement door at the top of the stairs any more (fixed in v6.0.29), so don't plan around that old trick.
- Rats need to be caught and brought to the altar.

### The Inn
- Dirty eggs must be washed before burning.
- Spiders carry dropped items away; don't leave items lying around.
- Zara stalks the corridors; stay coordinated.

### The Town
- Open outdoor spaces and buildings; Sam is dangerous at range.
- Use buildings to break line of sight.

### The Slaughterhouse
- Tight corridors; freezer rooms can lock you in.
- Nathan can move through vents.

### The Manor
- Crows can take heads; keep them moving.
- Doll heads must be cleaned before use.

### The Carnival
- The newest map, with its own ritual items and minions; check the in-game ritual objective for what to collect.
- Treat your first runs as scouting: learn the altar route and item spawns on Easy before bringing it up to Hard.

## Difficulty Levels

| Difficulty | Notes |
|---|---|
| Easy | Learning the map |
| Normal | Standard challenge |
| Hard | Faster Azazel, more fiends |
| Nightmare | The ultimate challenge; minimal margin for error |

Beating maps on higher difficulties unlocks achievements and some cosmetic rewards (for example, the 2025 Christmas event's Ice Wraith outfit required a Hard or Nightmare win as Sam).

## Progression

- Earn experience each game to increase your **Cult Rank**.
- Ranks award **Ritual Tokens**, which unlock **Perks** that help in runs. Spend your first tokens on perks that make mistakes less fatal, then on perks that suit your usual role.
- Cosmetic outfits and robes unlock through events, achievements, and collectibles.
- **Collectibles:** events hide collectibles across the maps. For example, the 2025 Christmas event hid 70 presents (10 on each of the 7 maps) that unlocked a Christmas robe, and the event ran a 1.5x EXP boost. Outfits earned in events stay unlocked after the event ends.
- **Supporter Edition:** an optional DLC on Steam that supports the developers; the base game has all maps.

## Recent Patches

| Version | Date | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| v6.0.29 | December 19, 2025 | Molly can no longer be trapped behind the Asylum basement door; fixes for doll heads on The Manor and Azazel screams on burn |
| v6.0.31 | January 18, 2026 | Stops Azazels getting stuck on players; fixes a Slaughterhouse freezer door exploit; doors opened by exploits now close when locked, so Azazel can't be trapped |
| v6.0.32 | April 13, 2026 | Many knockout and item-visibility fixes (for example, spiders on The Inn could see hidden dropped items, and enemies could see players reviving or washing eggs) |
| Revert | April 14, 2026 | v6.0.32 rolled back because speedrunners and regular players relied on some of the "bugs" |

The takeaway: exploits that trap Azazel have been patched out and stay patched, but the fixes from v6.0.32 are not currently live.

## Team Roles

| Role | Job |
|---|---|
| Item runner | Finds and brings ritual items to the altar |
| Key finder | Finds keys and unlocks doors |
| Battery supplier | Keeps everyone's UV charged |
| Lookout | Tracks Azazel and calls out their position |

Roles are informal, but agreeing on them at the start saves time.

## A Typical Run, Phase by Phase

**Opening (before the first burn)**
- Azazel is least aggressive now. Sweep the nearest rooms for keys, batteries, and ritual items.
- Call out what you find and where. Leave nothing important on the floor if the map has item-stealing fiends.
- Identify the route between the main item areas and the altar.

**Middle (roughly the third to seventh burn)**
- Fiend spawns increase and Azazel speeds up. Keep one player focused on tracking Azazel and calling positions.
- Keep UV charge topped up; fiends become more frequent.
- Start staging items near, but not on top of, the altar so you can chain burns later.

**Endgame (the last few burns)**
- This is where most runs die. Have every remaining item ready before you start.
- Use a lure: one player draws Azazel to the far side of the map while the others burn items in quick succession.
- If someone goes down, decide immediately whether to revive or push the final burn; hesitation kills teams.

**Solo runs**
- Solo is the same ritual with no revives, so every mistake is fatal. Stage items carefully and spend more time hiding and less time running.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Burning items without a plan.** Azazel gets faster with every burn. Plan the final few.
- **Wasting UV charge.** Only use UV on fiends when needed.
- **Splitting up too far.** You won't be able to revive each other.
- **Leaving items on the floor.** Some fiends take them.
- **Screaming or running near Azazel.** Noise attracts attention.
- **Ignoring keys.** Locked doors often hide items.

## Advanced Tips

- **Stockpile items before burning.** Gather several items near the altar, then burn them quickly one after another.
- **Distract Azazel.** One player lures Azazel away while others burn items.
- **Learn Azazel behaviour.** Each has unique traits.
- **Save batteries for the endgame.** Fiend spawns increase as the ritual progresses.
- **Use VR.** DEVOUR supports VR at no extra cost for an even scarier experience.

## FAQ

**Can I play DEVOUR solo?**
Yes, but it's much harder. It's designed for 1 to 4 players.

**How many maps are there?**
Seven as of September 2026: The Farmhouse, The Asylum, The Inn, The Town, The Slaughterhouse, The Manor, and The Carnival. The Apartments is planned for 2027.

**Can I play on cloud or Mac?**
Yes to both. The Steam version runs natively on macOS (10.15 or later) as well as Windows, and since December 2025 DEVOUR is on GeForce NOW, which lets you stream it on Windows, Mac, Android, iOS/iPadOS, and ChromeOS. You need to own it on Steam, and NVIDIA recommends 25 Mbps or more for 1080p.

**Does DEVOUR support VR?**
Yes, with no extra purchase.

**Why did patch v6.0.32 get reverted?**
Some bug fixes affected strategies used by speedrunners and regular players, so the developers reverted it on April 14, 2026.

**How long is a game?**
Sessions can last up to an hour.
