Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition: Complete Guide

Covers all five characters (Nero, Dante, Vergil, Lady and Trish), the difficulty ladder, Bloody Palace, boss tips, how to spend Proud Souls and Red Orbs, and a roadmap to every achievement.

Researched September 2026. Current as of Capcom's August 4, 2026 update (verified Windows 11 compatibility and bug fixes). Check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Skills refund at full value. Proud Souls buy skills between missions, and you can un-learn a skill to get all its Proud Souls back. Experiment freely.
  2. Learn Nero's Exceed timing. Revving Red Queen fills the Exceed gauge (up to 3 levels). Timing the rev right after a swing lands boosted attacks without charging. This is Nero's core damage tool.
  3. The Devil Bringer is your Swiss-army arm. Snatch pulls enemies to you (or you to them), and Buster does context-specific throws, including big damage on bosses.
  4. Style rank means more orbs. Varied attacks and not getting hit raise your Stylish Rank (D up to SSS) and increase Red Orb drops.
  5. Dante switches styles on the fly. Trickster, Swordmaster, Gunslinger and Royal Guard are all available in combat, and he unlocks Dark Slayer late in his story arc.
  6. Buy health and Devil Trigger upgrades. Blue Orbs (and fragments) extend health and Purple Orbs extend the Devil Trigger gauge. They're the best Red Orb purchases.
  7. Turn on Turbo Mode if you want the classic DMC3-like pace. It makes the game run about 20% faster, and Bloody Palace has a Turbo achievement.
  8. Secret Missions are hidden in the main missions. Look for secret-mission markers in side rooms and odd corners. Clearing them all is an achievement and rewards Blue Orb fragments.

Difficulty Ladder

Mode Notes
Human Easiest. Achievements "Easy Does It" and "The Best of the Rest" (S ranks).
Devil Hunter Normal. "Done and Done" and "A Cut Above" (S ranks).
Son of Sparda Tougher enemy placement and behavior. "Hardly A Simple Task" and "A Stunning Feat".
Dante Must Die Enemies Devil Trigger. Very aggressive. "All Bow Before You" and "Never Say Die".
Legendary Dark Knight (SE) Huge crowds of enemies at once. "What Legends Are Made Of" and "I Am Legendary".
Heaven or Hell You and enemies die in one hit. "Step into the Light".
Hell and Hell You die in one hit, enemies have normal health. "Tonight, We Dine in Hell".

Harder modes unlock by clearing the previous ones. The easiest order for achievements: Devil Hunter, then Son of Sparda, then Dante Must Die, with Legendary Dark Knight and the one-hit modes last.

Bosses (and the SSS-rank achievements)

Every boss below has an achievement for an SSS ranking on Son of Sparda or higher, so they're worth practicing.

Boss Tips Achievement
Berial A fire demon. Break its fire, then punish its legs and face when it goes down. Buster it when stunned. Flame Out
Bael / Dagon Frog-like demons that hide and lure you in. Hit the body, not the lures, and use Snatch to close gaps. Leap Frog
Echidna Serpent and plant hybrid. Dodge the charge and punish the opening. Buster during stuns. Bad Seed
Angelo Credo Shield and spear knight. Break the guard, then combo. Watch for spear throws. One Winged Devil
Angelo Agnus Summons flying enemies. Clear adds fast, then punish Agnus himself. For Science!
Dante (fought as Nero) A duel. Don't overcommit. Punish after his combos and Buster when he's vulnerable. Down A Notch
The Savior A giant construct. Destroy the weak points to expose the core. False Prophet

Sanctus (the Order's leader) is the final boss and pilots The Savior during the finale. There's no dedicated boss achievement for him, but his fight counts toward your mission grade on ranked runs. Keep your distance from his projectile patterns, use Snatch to close in when he's exposed, and Buster him at every opening.

SSS ranks: your mission grade (D to SSS) depends on time, style points, orbs collected, and item use. Don't use items, keep your style rank high, and move fast.

Bloody Palace

A survival tower of stages with a timer. Each character has a "clear all Bloody Palace stages" achievement ("Bring It On!" Nero, "I Live For This" Dante, "Might Makes Right" Vergil, "Bazooka Babe" Lady, "Filled With Light" Trish, plus "House Of Pain" for all characters).

Other Bloody Palace achievements:
