Destiny 2: Complete Guide (Renegades Era, 2026)

What Destiny 2 looks like now that active development has ended: what's in the game, how Power, gear tiers and Armor 3.0 work, what to do as a new or returning Guardian, and how the endgame loop fits together.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Season: Lawless (Year 8) with the Monument of Triumph update (June 9, 2026), the final content update. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Where Destiny 2 Stands in September 2026

Bottom line: the game is stable and "complete" for now. Current activities, loot and meta won't shift much unless Bungie releases the un-vaulting content.

Quick Start

  1. Base Destiny 2 is free-to-play. Expansions (The Edge of Fate, Renegades, and older ones) are paid; since June 2026 they're all bundled in Destiny 2: The Collection. You can play much of the Portal, Crucible, strikes and the free content without buying anything.
  2. Pick a class based on how you like to play. Hunter (mobility, dodge), Titan (tanky, barricades), Warlock (healing rifts, grenades). All can use every weapon.
  3. Renegades raised the Power cap (widely reported as 550; confirm in-game). New characters start low and climb. A catch-up boost has been available from Ikora for new players; check in the Tower if you're at low Power.
  4. Use the Portal. Since The Edge of Fate, the Portal is the main hub for matchmade activities (Solo Ops, Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops).
  5. Chase gear tiers. Weapons and armor drop in Tiers 1–5. Tier 5 is the best, with the highest stats and extra perk options. Higher difficulty and better grades raise your odds.
  6. Learn Armor 3.0 stats. The six stats are now Weapons, Health, Class, Grenade, Super and Melee, and can go up to 200.
  7. Get the Praxic Blade. Renegades' lightsaber-style Exotic sword comes from the Fire and Ice Exotic mission on Europa.
  8. Try Lawless Frontier. It's Renegades' main open-world activity and a fun way to level.
  9. Don't overthink subclass choice early. Prismatic lets you mix Light and Darkness abilities and is a strong default once unlocked.

Classes and Subclasses

Class Strengths Class ability
Hunter Mobility, invisibility, precision Dodge
Titan Durability, melee, crowd control Barricade
Warlock Healing, grenades, support Rift

Subclasses: Solar, Arc, Void (Light); Stasis, Strand (Darkness); and Prismatic, which combines abilities from both. Each subclass has Aspects (major traits) and Fragments (small modifiers).

Power and Progression

Gear Tiers and Armor 3.0

Introduced in The Edge of Fate (July 2025) and still in place:

Stat (new name) Replaces What it boosts
Weapons Mobility Weapon handling, reload, damage against non-bosses
Health Resilience Health regen on orb pickup, shield strength
Class Recovery Class ability cooldown, overshields
Grenade Discipline Grenade cooldown and damage
Super Intellect Super energy gain and damage
Melee Strength Melee cooldown and damage

Armor archetypes (each favors two stats): Gunner (Weapons + Grenade), Brawler (Melee + Health), Specialist (Class + Weapons), Grenadier (Grenade + Super), Paragon (Super + Melee), Bulwark (Health + Class). Build around the two stats your subclass cares about most, then fill the rest.

The Endgame Loop

  1. Hit the Power cap with Portal activities and Lawless Frontier.
  2. Farm Tier 5 gear from Pinnacle Ops, dungeons and raids at high difficulty.
  3. Build around Armor 3.0 stats and set bonuses.
  4. Run Pantheon for the hardest boss content and exclusive rewards.
  5. Chase Exotic catalysts, including all four Praxic Blade catalysts (Echoing Blade, Upper Hand, Hyperblade from Fire and Ice on Legendary; Energy Conduit from Equilibrium).
  6. Crucible Ops and Trials-style PvP for the competitive crowd.

FAQ

Is Destiny 2 still being updated? Monument of Triumph (June 2026) was the final content update. Servers stay up, and on September 21, 2026 Bungie announced plans to restore vaulted campaigns, destinations and raids, with no firm date yet. Small bug fixes continue.

What's the current Power cap? Widely reported as 550 in Renegades; confirm on your in-game Power screen.

How do I get the lightsaber (Praxic Blade)? Complete the Fire and Ice Exotic mission on Europa (Renegades). Three catalysts come from the mission, and the fourth from the Equilibrium dungeon.

Is Destiny 2 free? The base game and some activities are free. Expansions like The Edge of Fate and Renegades are paid.

What's the Portal? The matchmaking hub introduced in The Edge of Fate. It groups activities into Solo Ops, Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops and Crucible Ops.

Should I start playing Destiny 2 in 2026? If you want a finished game with a huge amount of content, yes. Just know that active development has ended and future content depends on Bungie's un-vaulting plans.
