Deceit: How to Play in 2026 (Deceit 1 and Legacy Mode Guide)

What happened to the original Deceit, how you can still play it (private Deceit 1 lobbies, or Legacy Mode in Deceit 2), and a full strategy guide for both roles in the classic six-player social deception format.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Deceit 1's wind-down (November 6, 2025) and Deceit 2's Legacy Mode (The Manor added November 20, 2025). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status: World Makers wound down Deceit 1 in 2025. Token purchases were turned off and the DLCs were taken off sale in July 2025, with the game removed from the Steam store on November 6, 2025. The studio said it was leaving the servers online with matchmaking disabled, so people who already own it can still play private matches. The reasons given were an old engine, DDoS vulnerability, cheating, and new regulations (especially in the UK). The supported way to play classic Deceit now is Legacy Mode in Deceit 2: a rebuild of the 2018 version of the six-player mode. Deceit 2 is free-to-play on Steam. The Manor came back to Legacy Mode on November 20, 2025, and Ranked Season 105 carried over from Deceit 1. Deceit 1 skins didn't transfer. Emblems and six remade Masquerade skins did.

Quick Start

  1. Choose how to play:
  2. Six players, two Infected. A third of the group is secretly Infected. The four Innocents need to escape. The Infected need to stop them.
  3. The map is three zones. Get the fuses and restore power to open the way forward. The last escape is through the safety hatch.
  4. Blackouts are when Infected can attack. When the lights go out, Infected can turn into their Terror form, which is faster and tougher and can execute Innocents.
  5. Infected drink blood to get ready. Infected have to secretly drink blood to power up. Catching someone in the act is the Innocents' best evidence.
  6. Light keeps you safe. Innocents should collect light items and stick to lit areas and groups.
  7. In Legacy Mode, protect the Antidote carriers. They're the backbone of the Innocents' survival.
  8. Talk. Voice chat is where Deceit is won or lost. Share what you've seen, form alliances, and watch who is lying.

How a Round Works

Phase Innocents Infected
Wake-up Find out your role. Explore the first zone and gather items Find out your partner. Plan who to target
Objective gathering Collect fuses and light items and push toward power Sneak blood, sabotage quietly, and steer the group apart
Blackout Group up in the light, and be ready to fight or run Transform into a Terror and pick off stragglers
Next zone Repeat. Each zone gets tenser Adapt. Your partner may already be under suspicion
Escape Reach the safety hatch Stop the escape, or kill enough Innocents first

Enraged Terrors: If the group is too slow to restore the lights or open the escape doors, the Terrors become enraged and can execute without their usual limits. Speed matters.

Matchmaking Disabled. Private matches only Public matchmaking and ranked
Engine and support Old CryEngine build with no further fixes. Cheating and DDoS were why it was retired Rebuilt on a modern engine with ongoing updates
Maps The original set The Asylum and The Manor (since Nov 20, 2025)
Cosmetics Your old Deceit 1 items (can't be transferred) Deceit 2 cosmetics, emblems carried over, remade Masquerade skins
Best for Nostalgia nights with a full group of friends Everyone else

Setting up a private Deceit 1 night: You need six people who all still own the game. Have one person create the private lobby and invite the others through Steam. Agree beforehand on voice channel etiquette (for example, dead players don't leak information over Discord). Nothing is patched any more, so expect the odd bug and don't rely on it for anything serious.

FAQ

Is Deceit 1 shut down? It was removed from the Steam store on November 6, 2025. World Makers left the servers up with matchmaking disabled, so owners can still host private matches with friends. Public play has moved to Deceit 2's Legacy Mode.

How do I play Legacy Mode? Open Deceit 2 (free-to-play on Steam) and select Legacy on the Play tab.

Is The Manor in Legacy Mode? Yes. It came back on November 20, 2025, with smoother movement and better lighting. Arctic was voted next, but the developers said technical limits were holding it back.

Did my Deceit 1 skins transfer? No. The developers said Deceit 1 skins can't transfer because the technology isn't compatible. Emblems were transferred, and six Masquerade skins were remade in Deceit 2.

How many Infected are there? Two in a six-player lobby, a third of the group.

Is Deceit 2's main mode the same as Legacy? No. Deceit 2's main mode is a larger, newer design with its own maps and Terrors (recent updates added a Wild West map, Bluff Gulch). Legacy Mode is the one that recreates classic Deceit.
