# Deceit: How to Play in 2026 (Deceit 1 and Legacy Mode Guide)

What happened to the original Deceit, how you can still play it (private Deceit 1 lobbies, or Legacy Mode in Deceit 2), and a full strategy guide for both roles in the classic six-player social deception format.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of Deceit 1's wind-down (November 6, 2025) and Deceit 2's Legacy Mode (The Manor added November 20, 2025). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

> **Status:** World Makers **wound down Deceit 1** in 2025. Token purchases were turned off and the DLCs were taken off sale in July 2025, with the game **removed from the Steam store on November 6, 2025**. The studio said it was **leaving the servers online with matchmaking disabled**, so people who already own it can still play **private matches**. The reasons given were an old engine, DDoS vulnerability, cheating, and new regulations (especially in the UK). The supported way to play classic Deceit now is **Legacy Mode in Deceit 2**: a rebuild of the 2018 version of the six-player mode. Deceit 2 is free-to-play on Steam. **The Manor** came back to Legacy Mode on November 20, 2025, and **Ranked Season 105 carried over** from Deceit 1. Deceit 1 skins didn't transfer. Emblems and six remade Masquerade skins did.

## Quick Start

1. **Choose how to play:**
   - **Deceit 1 (if it's in your library):** Private matches only. Get five friends and create a private lobby.
   - **Legacy Mode (Deceit 2):** Open Deceit 2 and select **Legacy** on the Play tab. It has live matchmaking and ranked play.
2. **Six players, two Infected.** A third of the group is secretly Infected. The four Innocents need to escape. The Infected need to stop them.
3. **The map is three zones.** Get the **fuses** and restore **power** to open the way forward. The last escape is through the **safety hatch**.
4. **Blackouts are when Infected can attack.** When the lights go out, Infected can turn into their **Terror** form, which is faster and tougher and can execute Innocents.
5. **Infected drink blood to get ready.** Infected have to secretly **drink blood** to power up. Catching someone in the act is the Innocents' best evidence.
6. **Light keeps you safe.** Innocents should collect **light items** and stick to lit areas and groups.
7. **In Legacy Mode, protect the Antidote carriers.** They're the backbone of the Innocents' survival.
8. **Talk.** Voice chat is where Deceit is won or lost. Share what you've seen, form alliances, and watch who is lying.

## How a Round Works

| Phase | Innocents | Infected |
|---|---|---|
| **Wake-up** | Find out your role. Explore the first zone and gather items | Find out your partner. Plan who to target |
| **Objective gathering** | Collect fuses and light items and push toward power | Sneak blood, sabotage quietly, and steer the group apart |
| **Blackout** | Group up in the light, and be ready to fight or run | Transform into a Terror and pick off stragglers |
| **Next zone** | Repeat. Each zone gets tenser | Adapt. Your partner may already be under suspicion |
| **Escape** | Reach the safety hatch | Stop the escape, or kill enough Innocents first |

**Enraged Terrors:** If the group is too slow to restore the lights or open the escape doors, the Terrors become **enraged** and can execute without their usual limits. Speed matters.

## Maps

- **The Asylum:** The flagship map. Open medical wards where the group gathers, cramped and dark isolation rooms, and long tunnels and corridors that become chokepoints. Vents and doors link the zones.
- **The Manor:** Back in Legacy Mode since November 20, 2025, with smoother movement, better lighting, and more tension than the original.
- **Arctic:** The community voted for it to return next, but World Makers said technical pipeline limits were holding it back.

## Playing as an Innocent

- **Stay in lit areas and groups** during blackouts. A lone Innocent in the dark is the Terrors' favourite target.
- **Collect light items early** so you're not stuck in the dark when the power drops.
- **Watch for drinking.** Infected need blood. If a player keeps disappearing to the edges of rooms, or you catch them drinking, call it out with specifics: where, when, and who else saw it.
- **Protect Antidote carriers** (Legacy Mode). Losing them makes the late game much harder.
- **Build a trusted core.** Once you've confirmed two or three innocent players (you've watched them through a blackout, or seen them get attacked), move as a unit.
- **Don't split up for objectives.** "I'll get the fuse alone" is how Innocents die. Go in pairs at least.
- **Push objectives quickly.** Slow teams give the Infected more blackouts and enraged Terrors.

## Playing as the Infected

- **Blend in first.** Help with objectives, pick up items, and chat like an Innocent. Early suspicion ruins the game.
- **Drink blood carefully.** Only when nobody's looking. Getting caught drinking is the most common way the Infected get exposed.
- **Coordinate with your partner.** Split up during the day so you can vouch for each other. Converge on the same isolated target when the blackout hits.
- **Sow doubt.** Accuse an Innocent with a half-truth ("they were near the fuse box by themselves"). Every minute the Innocents spend distrusting each other is a minute they aren't hunting you.
- **Pick your targets.** Players who wander off and the Antidote carriers are the priority.
- **Don't transform in view of a group.** The less evidence the Innocents have, the easier your next blackout.

## Communication and Social Tactics

- **Evidence beats accusation.** "I saw X drinking in the ward at the second fuse" is more convincing than "X is sus".
- **Track alibis.** Who was with whom during each blackout? Only the Infected are never the victim.
- **Watch who pushes which accusations.** A player who always sides against the group, or defends someone who's clearly guilty, may be the second Infected.
- **Stay calm when accused.** Panicking and shouting looks guilty. Give specific facts about where you were.
- **Make pacts carefully.** Alliances help, but the Infected make them too.

## Deceit 1 Private Lobbies vs Legacy Mode

| | Deceit 1 (private) | Legacy Mode (Deceit 2) |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Only if it's already in your Steam library. Removed from the store | Free-to-play Deceit 2 on Steam, plus PlayStation and Xbox for Deceit 2 itself |
| Matchmaking | Disabled. Private matches only | Public matchmaking and ranked |
| Engine and support | Old CryEngine build with no further fixes. Cheating and DDoS were why it was retired | Rebuilt on a modern engine with ongoing updates |
| Maps | The original set | The Asylum and The Manor (since Nov 20, 2025) |
| Cosmetics | Your old Deceit 1 items (can't be transferred) | Deceit 2 cosmetics, emblems carried over, remade Masquerade skins |
| Best for | Nostalgia nights with a full group of friends | Everyone else |

**Setting up a private Deceit 1 night:** You need six people who all still own the game. Have one person create the private lobby and invite the others through Steam. Agree beforehand on voice channel etiquette (for example, dead players don't leak information over Discord). Nothing is patched any more, so expect the odd bug and don't rely on it for anything serious.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Wandering off alone** as an Innocent, especially right before a blackout.
- **Drinking blood in plain sight** as the Infected.
- **Accusing without evidence.** It burns trust and helps the Infected.
- **Ignoring the timer.** Slow objectives lead to enraged Terrors.
- **Hoarding light items.** Share them with your trusted group so nobody's left in the dark.
- **Buying Deceit 1 content.** It's been taken off sale, and Deceit 1 skins don't carry over to Deceit 2.

## Advanced Tips

- **Timing the blackout:** Innocents should gather in the brightest, most defensible room as the zone's objectives come close to finishing. Infected should get to their target just before the lights go.
- **Infected pair play:** One Infected "confirms" the other by vouching for them whenever suspicion comes up. Innocents should be wary of a pair who are always together.
- **Ranked in Legacy Mode:** Ranked play carried over from Deceit 1 (Season 105). Play your role consistently and don't throw games when you're found out early.
- **Private Deceit 1 lobbies:** With friends only, you can set up game nights with house rules. There's no public matchmaking.

## FAQ

**Is Deceit 1 shut down?**
It was removed from the Steam store on November 6, 2025. World Makers left the servers up with matchmaking disabled, so owners can still host private matches with friends. Public play has moved to Deceit 2's Legacy Mode.

**How do I play Legacy Mode?**
Open Deceit 2 (free-to-play on Steam) and select **Legacy** on the Play tab.

**Is The Manor in Legacy Mode?**
Yes. It came back on November 20, 2025, with smoother movement and better lighting. Arctic was voted next, but the developers said technical limits were holding it back.

**Did my Deceit 1 skins transfer?**
No. The developers said Deceit 1 skins can't transfer because the technology isn't compatible. Emblems were transferred, and six Masquerade skins were remade in Deceit 2.

**How many Infected are there?**
Two in a six-player lobby, a third of the group.

**Is Deceit 2's main mode the same as Legacy?**
No. Deceit 2's main mode is a larger, newer design with its own maps and Terrors (recent updates added a Wild West map, Bluff Gulch). Legacy Mode is the one that recreates classic Deceit.
