# Crab Game: Complete Guide

A guide to Dani's free party game: how lobbies and hosting work, strategy for each minigame mode, the cosmetics and crate system, and what to expect from a game that hasn't been updated since 2021.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of the Christmas Update (December 9, 2021), the last official update. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

> **Status note:** Crab Game is still free and playable on Steam in September 2026, but it has not had an official update since December 2021 (Wikipedia describes development as stalled). The store page still lists up to 35 players, 28 maps and 9 game modes, though the patch notes added more maps and modes after that text was written. Expect no new content, and be aware that some old bugs are unlikely to be fixed.

## Quick Start

1. **It's a last-player-standing party game.** Everyone competes through rounds of minigames inspired by children's games until one player wins the cash prize.
2. **Join from the server list or make your own lobby.** The host picks maps and modes (the "Default" or "Modified" icon in the server list shows whether the host changed the rotation - hover it to see which).
3. **Proximity voice chat is on.** People near you can hear you. Mute or adjust it in settings if needed.
4. **Crates are free.** You get cosmetic crates as random drops after games (with a daily limit) and from daily quests.
5. **Being toxic reduces your drops.** Per the developer, being reported, banned or kicked for bad behavior (or hacking) lowers crate drop rates - but getting kicked by a salty host doesn't count against you.
6. **Private lobbies with friends are the best experience.** Public lobbies can be chaotic, and the host has full control over kicking and banning.
7. **Rebind the drop key and tune Input Latency** in settings. Lower input latency makes the mouse more responsive at the cost of FPS.
8. **Recycling is permanent.** Recycled cosmetics turn into rags and can't be recovered.

## How a Match Works

- A lobby holds up to about 35-40 players (the store page lists 35; the launch patch set the server cap to 40).
- Each round picks a map and a game mode from the host's rotation.
- Players are eliminated each round until one person is left to take the prize.
- **Spectating:** eliminated players spectate the rest of the match.
- **Practice / Free play** mode lets you explore maps without pressure.

## Game Modes and Strategy

Red Light, Green Light is the game's signature opener; the other modes below are the ones named in the launch and update patch notes. The host's settings decide which appear.

### Red Light, Green Light

- Move only when it's "green"; any movement on "red" eliminates you.
- **Stop early.** Latency means stopping at the last moment can still register as moving.
- **Don't stand directly behind other players** - you can get blocked or pushed.

### Tile Drive

- A tile-based survival mode (the round intro explains the rules); the aim is to be among the survivors when it ends.
- **Move deliberately** and watch what happens to the players ahead of you before committing.
- The launch patch fixed a bug where Tile Drive sometimes killed the winners, so it's now reliable.

### Bomb Tag

- Players carrying a bomb must tag someone else before the timer runs out.
- **If you have the bomb:** chase players who are cornered or distracted.
- **If you don't:** keep distance and use obstacles to break line of sight.

### Hide and Seek

- Seekers hunt hiders; since the Christmas Update, **seekers are frozen for the first 5 seconds** so hiders can get into position.
- **Hiders:** pick spots with multiple exits and avoid obvious corners.
- **Seekers:** listen for footsteps and voice chat; proximity chat gives people away.

### Race

- Get to the goal before other players. Race maps include Sussy Sandcastle, Lava Climb and Macaroni Mountain (Content Update 1) and Sussy Slope (Christmas Update).
- **Take efficient lines** and avoid pile-ups.

### Bustling Buttons

- Players press buttons with random outcomes (the patch notes literally call it "RNGesus").
- **Watch what happens to others** before you commit.

### Death From Above and Block Drop

- Avoid falling blocks from above (Death From Above) or blocks that drop out beneath you (Block Drop).
- **Keep moving,** watch shadows, and don't stand in crowded spots.
- Maps include Lava Dump, Salty Island and Skybox (Death From Above) and Cheeky Chamber, Peaceful Platform and Lava Drop (Block Drop).

### Dodgeball and Snow Brawl (Christmas Update)

- Dodgeball maps: Dodgy Ice, Dodgy Fields, Dodgy Streets, Dodgy Snow.
- **Dodge laterally** instead of backing away - throws are aimed where you're heading.
- Snowballs also appear on many winter-themed maps.

### The Floor is Lava and Stepping Stones (Christmas Update)

- Floor is Lava (e.g., Sandy Stones): stay on raised objects as the floor becomes deadly.
- Stepping Stones (Sandy Islands, Small Sandy Islands): hop between platforms carefully.

### Standoff

- A shooting mode added in Content Update 2 ("pew pew"), then removed from the rotation in the Christmas Update.

## Items and Combat

- Many maps have **weapons or items** to pick up. Use them to push, stun or eliminate players depending on the mode.
- **Drop key** is rebindable in settings - useful for quickly swapping items.
- The Content Update 1 notes fixed an issue where hits didn't register; the Christmas Update fixed another hit-registration bug.
- **Crouch spamming** was nerfed at launch, so it's not an effective dodge anymore.
- **Milk** is famously listed as a store-page feature. Yes, really.

## Cosmetics, Crates and Recycling

### Earning cosmetics

- When a game finishes, there's a chance of a **crate drop**; there's a **daily limit**.
- **Daily quests** also give crates.
- Being toxic, reported, banned or kicked for bad behavior, or hacking reduces drops.

### Crate contents

- Categories: **Hair, Hats, Accessories and Shoes** (50+ items in the Cosmetics Update, plus 13 in the Christmas Box).
- Rarities: **Common, Uncommon, Rare, Extraordinary and Legendary.**
- Items can have **special attributes**, including color variants in tiered rarities.
- A **Christmas Box** was added with the holiday update.

### Recycling and crafting

- In your inventory, click an item and choose **Recycle** to turn it into **rags**.
- Collect enough rags to **craft a random crate**.
- **Recycling is permanent** - double-check before recycling anything rare.
- You can open your inventory and crates in-game as well as from the main menu.

### Store

- The Steam store page lists a small set of purchasable cosmetic items (e.g., the black fedora was added to the item store in December 2021).

## Hosting Tips

- **Set a map/mode rotation** when you create the server - hover the Default/Modified icon in the server list to see what other hosts picked.
- **Kick or ban disruptive players** (the launch patch fixed kicking/banning dead players).
- **Name your lobby clearly.** Lobby names use a profanity filter.
- **Give the lobby a theme:** e.g., race-only or chaos modes; players stay longer when the rotation is fun.
- **Keep the lobby size reasonable** for your connection - huge lobbies stress the host.

## Performance and Troubleshooting

- **Stutter:** the Christmas Update notes say the developer "tried to fix some stutter issues" but wasn't sure it worked. Lower graphics settings and raise Input Latency slightly for smoother frames.
- **Stuck joining a lobby:** Content Update 2 mentions a bug where you could join a lobby forever; restart and rejoin.
- **Networking:** since Content Update 1, the game uses Steam's newer networking, which relays traffic through Steam and masks your IP.
- **Mac and Linux:** native builds exist (added in November 2021), but the solo developer noted limited testing on those platforms.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. **Recycling rare items by accident.** It can't be undone.
2. **Moving on red** in Red Light, Green Light - stop early.
3. **Crowding in survival modes.** Crowds get pushed and fall first.
4. **Talking in Hide and Seek.** Proximity chat gives away your spot.
5. **Joining random lobbies expecting fair play.** Hosts can kick anyone, and public lobbies vary a lot.
6. **Expecting new content.** The game hasn't been updated since 2021.

## Advanced Tips

- **Play the host's rotation:** check the lobby's modified modes in the server list so you know what to expect.
- **In Bomb Tag,** pass the bomb to players near walls or corners where they can't escape.
- **In Tile Drive,** read the round intro and watch how the first players fare before taking risks.
- **In Hide and Seek,** use the seekers' 5-second freeze to reach a spot away from the spawn.
- **In Dodgeball,** keep moving sideways and use cover.
- **Set up private lobbies with friends** for the best time, with custom rotations and no disruptions.

## FAQ

**Is Crab Game still playable in 2026?**
Yes. It's still free on Steam with recent reviews around 79% positive (91% all-time), but it hasn't been updated since December 2021.

**How many players can join?**
The store page says up to 35; the developer set the server cap to 40 after launch.

**Are crates free?**
Yes. Crates drop randomly after games (with a daily limit) and from daily quests, and you can craft them from rags.

**Is Crab Game based on Squid Game?**
It's clearly inspired by it - the store page jokes that it's "definitely not based on any online streaming pop culture korean tv shows."

**Will there be new updates?**
No updates have been released since December 2021, and there's no announced plan for more.

**Is it safe to play on public servers?**
Since Content Update 1, the game uses Steam's relay networking, which masks your IP. Beyond that, public lobbies are run by hosts with full kick/ban control, so play in friends' lobbies if you want a controlled experience.
