# Cossacks 3: Beginner-to-Advanced Guide

How to run a Cossacks 3 economy that can feed thousands of soldiers, how formations and resources really work, and how to survive your first skirmish and multiplayer games.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of the last major gameplay patch (2.1.5.91.5955, June 2018); the game still sells with its five DLC packs but has had no balance patches since. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

## Quick Start

1. **It is a remake of Cossacks: European Wars (2001).** If you know the original, the economy, formations and six resources all work the same way.
2. **Six resources: food, wood, stone, gold, iron, coal.** Every one of them matters in a long game. Ranged units and artillery burn **iron and coal** every time they fire; gold pays upkeep.
3. **Peasants never stop being the answer.** Keep your Town Center producing peasants almost nonstop for the first 10–15 minutes.
4. **Unit costs rise as you build more of them.** Each new unit of a type costs more than the last, so a huge army is also an economy check.
5. **Use formations.** An officer and a drummer let you group infantry into formations with morale and defensive bonuses. Loose blobs of musketeers melt.
6. **Peace time is your friend.** In skirmish and most multiplayer lobbies, set peace time (no attacks allowed) while you learn. Use it to build a full economy.
7. **Don't run out of food or gold.** Famine kills your people; empty treasury makes mercenaries and ships turn on you.
8. **Scout the terrain.** Height gives ranged units real advantages, and forests/rivers funnel armies.

## Resources and What They Do

| Resource | How you get it | What eats it |
|---|---|---|
| Food | Fields worked by peasants near mills; fishing boats on water maps | Every unit's upkeep; famine kills units if it hits zero |
| Wood | Peasants chop forests | Almost every building, early units, ships |
| Stone | Peasants gather from rock outcrops | Buildings, walls, many upgrades |
| Gold | Gold mines (garrison peasants inside) | Upkeep for mercenaries/ships, expensive units and upgrades; units that need upkeep mutiny if gold runs out |
| Iron | Iron mines | Military units, and consumed by firearms each shot |
| Coal | Coal mines | Consumed by firearms and artillery each shot |

Key rules:

- **Mines are worked by peasants inside them.** Upgrading a mine raises how many peasants fit. Upgraded, full mines are where your late-game economy comes from.
- **Gold is the hidden trap.** New players ignore gold because early units do not seem to need it; then the army grows, upkeep starts to drain, and everything falls apart.
- **Firearms without coal and iron do not fire.** A mass of musketeers is useless if your coal mine got raided. Protect mines with towers or a small garrison.
- **Market:** you can trade resources at the market at a loss. It is the emergency fix, not an economy.
- **Team trading:** since the June 2018 patch, teammates (and players without a team) can send resources to each other in multiplayer and random maps after 15 minutes of game time.

## Economy Opening (skirmish/random map, normal start)

This is a safe, general order that works for every nation. Adjust to map and starting options.

1. **Peasants, peasants, peasants.** Queue peasants from the Town Center continuously.
2. **Houses** for population as you go, then a **mill** and send peasants to the fields. Food is the first bottleneck.
3. **Wood and stone** workers next. Build a storehouse near forests if the trees are far away.
4. **Blacksmith** — unlocks economic and military upgrades and is a prerequisite for a lot of buildings.
5. **Mines:** get **stone and gold** gathering started early, then **iron and coal** before you plan to field musketeers in numbers.
6. **17th-century barracks** for your first pikemen and musketeers, **stables** for cavalry.
7. Keep expanding: more mills and fields, mine upgrades, farming upgrades. Economic upgrades pay for themselves fast.
8. **Academy** and later tech for 18th-century troops, artillery and advanced upgrades.

### Starting options (lobby)

The 2018 patch added extra starting setups you can pick for faster games:

- **Village** — Town Center, two houses, blacksmith, stables and 17th-century barracks.
- **XVII century barracks** — blacksmith, two 17th-century barracks and two log cabins.
- **Log cabins** — four log cabins.
- **Union** — start with an allied nation's peasants.

Also look at **peace time** and **starting resources** in the lobby. Long peace time plus high resources is the most relaxed way to learn.

## Army Basics

### Unit roles

| Role | Examples (generic types) | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Pikemen | Early and 18th-century pike infantry | Cheap line holders, anti-cavalry |
| Musketeers | Line infantry | Main damage from range, need coal and iron |
| Grenadiers | Elite infantry | Anti-building and strong line infantry |
| Light cavalry | Hussars and similar | Raiding peasants, chasing routed units |
| Heavy cavalry | Cuirassiers, reiters and similar | Smashing infantry that is out of formation |
| Artillery | Cannons, howitzers, mortars | Sieges, blasting dense formations |
| Ships | Yachts, galleys, frigates, ships of the line | Naval control, coastal bombardment |

Nations have unique units that stand in for or add to these roles, such as the Polish **winged hussars**, Turkish **janissaries** or Ukrainian **serdiuks**. Read your nation's barracks tooltip before your first match.

### Formations and morale

- Select infantry of one type plus **an officer and a drummer**, then choose a formation. Classic Cossacks formation sizes are 15, 36, 72, 120 and 196 soldiers.
- Formations move together, hold shape, and get morale and defensive bonuses, especially with a **stand ground** order.
- Units have **morale**. Heavy losses, especially from cavalry charges or cannon fire, can make them rout.
- A formation is built from exactly one of those sizes of a single unit type, so train infantry in batches that match the size you want.

### Combat rules of thumb

- **Volley, then melee.** Musketeers reload slowly. Let the first volley land on a packed enemy, then either reload or send pikes/cavalry in.
- **Cavalry punishes loose infantry** and anything reloading. Keep pikemen in front of or beside musketeers.
- **Artillery wins sieges and breaks deathballs,** but it is fragile and expensive in coal and iron. Escort it.
- **High ground matters.** Landscape strongly affects range and tactics; fight uphill only if you must.
- **Raid the economy.** Light cavalry into enemy fields and mines is often more damaging than a head-on battle.

## Naval Play

- Water maps (Coastal, Lakes, Rivers and similar random map types) make ports and fishing boats a big part of the food economy.
- As of the 2018 patch, **ports** were weakened (HP down to 50,000), **galleys** lost HP (down to 35,000) and consume 33% more gold, and **ships of the line** gained HP (up to 95,000). Heavy warships are the late-game naval hammer.
- Port upgrades include one that lets woodworkers repair ships.
- Gold upkeep for big ships is serious. If your treasury empties mid-battle you can lose your fleet.

## Campaigns and Single Player

- The base game's historical campaigns are Turin, Khotyn, Edgehill, Mogilev and la Manche.
- DLC campaigns cover Poland, Prussia, Sweden, Scotland, Turkey, Spain and the Netherlands.
- Many missions give fixed armies with limited or no economy. Preserve units, use terrain and formations, and do not waste artillery ammunition.
- Random-map skirmish against AI is the best practice ground for multiplayer.

## Multiplayer Notes

- Up to 8 players, free-for-all or teams, with optional AI.
- The official ranked ladder (rating seasons in 2018 moved to an Elo system) used fixed options with 2v2 teams. The competitive community has been small but active for years; expect experienced players.
- Hotkeys can be remapped in settings. Learn hotkeys for selecting idle peasants, building production and grouping formations; in large games your APM goes into the economy.
- Watch for early cavalry raids. A handful of towers or a couple of pikemen near your mills is cheap insurance.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Stopping peasant production** once the army starts. The economy should keep growing until the late game.
- **Forgetting coal and iron.** Musketeers and cannons silently stop shooting when these hit zero.
- **Ignoring gold upkeep** until mercenaries or ships turn against you.
- **Fighting in blobs** instead of formations.
- **Charging cavalry into pikes** or into a fresh volley.
- **Leaving mines unprotected.** A raid on your mines can stop your whole army.
- **Over-building one unit type** — remember costs climb with each unit you make.

## Advanced Tips

- **Mix your army.** Pikes in front, musketeers behind, cavalry on the flanks, cannons protected at the back.
- **Timing attacks** around the end of peace time: have your army at the border the moment it ends.
- **Upgrade mines early** in long games. Mines with more peasants multiply your income without new buildings.
- **Use the market sparingly** to fix a single missing resource for a critical upgrade.
- **Walls and towers** buy time against raids while you build up. In team games, one player can wall off chokepoints while the other builds army.
- **Rotate formations.** Pull a battered formation back, re-form with fresh troops.
- **Use allies' resources.** In team games, feed a teammate whose army is fighting right now.

## FAQ

**Is Cossacks 3 still supported?**
The last big patch was in June 2018. GSC still runs sales (including a 30th-anniversary sale in November 2025) and the servers work, but don't expect new balance changes.

**Do I need the DLC?**
No. The base game has 12 nations and five campaigns. DLC adds nations, campaigns and landscapes.

**Why are my musketeers not shooting?**
You are out of coal or iron. Check mines and resources.

**Why are my units dying on their own?**
Famine. Food has run out. Build more fields and mills or trade at the market.

**What is "peace time"?**
A lobby setting that forbids attacks for a set number of minutes so everyone can build their economy.

**How do formations work?**
Select infantry plus an officer and a drummer and pick a formation from the command panel.

**Is it good for new RTS players?**
Yes if you like slow economic buildup and big battles. Start with long peace time against the AI.
