Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: Complete Guide

This guide covers reactive turn-based combat, character builds, Pictos and Luminas, how progression works, a spoiler-light route through the acts, and the post-game content added by the free updates.

Researched September 2026 — current as of patch v1.5.6 (30 June 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Dodge first, parry later. Dodging has a wider window and still avoids all damage. Parry once you know an enemy's rhythm. Parries restore 1 AP, and parrying every hit of a combo triggers a counterattack.
  2. Every action costs AP. Base attacks build it and skills spend it. A turn where you just attack to build AP is normal, not wasted.
  3. Use Free Aim. Shots cost 1 AP each. They hit weak points, destroy some projectiles, and can break shields. Many enemies have glowing spots that take huge damage.
  4. Equip Pictos to learn Luminas. Wear a Picto for 4 battles and you learn its effect as a Lumina. Any character can then equip that Lumina with Lumina points. This is the core build system.
  5. Put a Colour of Lumina in every character. Each one adds a Lumina point. They're found all over the world, so explore side paths.
  6. Expedition Flags are rest and save points. Resting refills HP and Tints, but also respawns enemies. Level-ups, attributes, and fast travel all go through Flags.
  7. Upgrade weapons with Chroma Catalysts. Weapon passives unlock at weapon levels 4, 10, and 20. One upgraded weapon usually beats a new unupgraded one.
  8. Change difficulty any time. Story, Expeditioner, and Expert can be swapped in the settings. Patch 1.3.0 widened parry and dodge windows by 40% on Story.
  9. Talk to your party at camp. Relationship scenes unlock extra rewards and character moments. Recoats (respec items) reset a character's attributes or skills when a build isn't working.

The Expeditioners

Character Weapon Unique mechanic Best at
Gustave Sword and pistol, mechanical arm Overcharge: charges build up and fuel a big arm blast Early breaking and single-target burst
Lune Mage focus Stains (element charges) left by her spells, consumed by others AoE, elemental weakness, healing
Maelle Rapier Stances: Defensive, Offensive, Virtuose (Virtuose gives a big damage boost) Endgame burst damage
Sciel Scythe-style blade and cards Foretell stacks on enemies, consumed for burst. Sun and Moon charges build toward Twilight Support plus huge burst
Monoco Gestral, mimicry Bestial Wheel steps change skill effects. Learns skills from enemy drops Flexible utility and huge skill list
Verso Sword Perfection ranks (D up to S) that rise as he fights well and drop when he's hit Very high damage for careful players

Gustave, Lune, Maelle, and Sciel make up the early party. Monoco and Verso join as the story moves on. Monoco learns new skills from items dropped by the enemy types he copies. Many of them can be farmed later, so don't worry if you miss one.

Pictos and Luminas

Build Archetypes

Team rule of thumb: one burst DPS, one support/enabler, one flex slot for breaking or elemental coverage. On Expert, always carry a revive option, such as Revive Tints or the Second Chance Lumina.

Route Outline (Spoiler-Light)

Act Key areas (in order)
Prologue Lumière: the Gommage and the Expedition's departure
Act I Spring Meadows → Flying Waters → Ancient Sanctuary → Gestral Village → Esquie's Nest → Stone Wave Cliffs
Act II Forgotten Battlefield → Monoco's Station → Old Lumière → the Axons (Visages, Sirene) → The Monolith, then a short interlude in the Manor
Act III The world opens up: return to Lumière, optional regions (including Verso's Drafts from v1.5.0), final choice

Esquie is your world-map mount. His movement upgrades unlock as you progress: smashing rocks, swimming, diving, and eventually flying. Each one opens optional areas with bosses, Colours of Lumina, and top-tier gear. Go back to earlier regions every time you get a new ability.

Gestral Village has arenas and merchants. Come back to the arena as you level up. Mimes hide all over the world and drop outfits and haircuts, so fight every one you see.
