# Chivalry 2: Complete Guide

A new-to-veteran guide to Torn Banner's medieval battlefield: melee fundamentals, every class and subclass, Team Objective play, weapon picks, progression and the state of the game in 2026.

*Researched September 2026 — current as of hotfix 2.11.4 (December 2025). The Regicide update (2.11, May 2024) was the last major content update; since then the game receives stability hotfixes only. Unofficial Servers and Skill Based Team Balance arrived with Duel of the Fêtes (March 2024). Check the linked sources if something differs.*

## Quick Start

1. **Block, then hit back.** Holding block when an attack lands is a parry; attacking immediately after is a riposte, which is faster and interrupts their next swing.
2. **Three attack types matter.** Slash (horizontal), Overhead (vertical) and Stab (thrust). Each has different reach, speed and angle — learn when to use each.
3. **Watch your stamina.** Blocking and getting hit drain it. Run out and you get disarmed.
4. **Stay with your team.** Chivalry 2 punishes lone wolves; three enemies swinging at you win every time.
5. **Pick a Footman or Knight subclass first.** They are forgiving, and the Field Engineer's objective tools are valuable.
6. **Team Objective (TO) is the heart of the game.** Push, defend, carry objectives. Big battles, big XP.
7. **Throw things.** Every weapon, torch, severed limb and item can be thrown with enough damage to finish a weakened enemy.
8. **Disengage to recover.** Health regenerates when you stop taking damage for a while, and support items (like the Officer's banner and supply options) help — backing off for a few seconds often beats trading hits at low health.
9. **Friendly fire exists.** Watch your swing arcs near teammates, especially with big weapons.

## Combat Fundamentals

| Mechanic | What it does |
|---|---|
| Slash | Wide horizontal swing; hits multiple enemies and teammates |
| Overhead | Vertical attack; tight hit area, good in crowds |
| Stab | Thrust; longest reach, narrow hit |
| Heavy attack | Hold an attack for more damage and different timing |
| Special attack | Weapon-specific move with unique properties |
| Block / Parry | Blocking at the moment of impact parries; allows a riposte |
| Riposte | Fast counterattack after a parry |
| Counter | Answering an incoming attack with the same attack type at the right moment blocks and strikes back in one move |
| Feint | Cancel an attack into another to bait a parry |
| Drag | Delay an attack by turning away to throw off parry timing |
| Accel | Speed up an attack by turning into it |
| Combo | Chain attacks for faster follow-ups |
| Kick | Breaks blocks and interrupts |
| Sprint charge | Leap attack while sprinting |
| Throw | Throw your weapon or objects for burst damage |
| Battle cry | Shout on a cooldown; use it before engaging rather than mid-duel |

### Parry and riposte in practice

1. Face the enemy squarely and block when their swing lands.
2. Immediately attack — the riposte is faster and puts you back on offence.
3. If they feint (cancel mid-swing), do not panic block again early; wait for the real attack.

### Countering

Countering means answering an attack with the same attack type (for example, an overhead against an incoming overhead) at the right moment. It defends and hits back faster than a normal parry-riposte and is a key high-level skill; it costs stamina, so do not rely on it when you are nearly out.

## Classes and Subclasses

| Class | Subclasses | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Archer | Longbowman, Crossbowman, Skirmisher | Ranged damage, javelins, support |
| Vanguard | Devastator, Raider, Ambusher | Aggressive two-handers, fast flanking |
| Footman | Poleman, Man at Arms, Field Engineer | Versatile support and objective play |
| Knight | Officer, Guardian, Crusader | Tanky frontliners with shields and heavy weapons |

Tips per class:
- **Archer**: stay behind your team; target enemy archers and wounded fighters.
- **Vanguard**: flank and hit the enemies engaged with your teammates.
- **Footman**: Field Engineer builds barricades and objective tools; Poleman keeps enemies at bay.
- **Knight**: lead pushes and hold chokepoints; Officer's banner heals nearby allies.

### Weapons worth trying

- **Messer** and **Longsword** — fast and reliable.
- **Polehammer** and **Halberd** — reach and big hits.
- **Greatsword** — strong two-hander.
- **Morning Star**, **Mace** — heavy-hitting one-handers.
- **Goedendag** — the last weapon added (Regicide update).

Every weapon has strengths; pick one and learn its reach and timing rather than chasing a "best" pick.

## Game Modes

| Mode | Details |
|---|---|
| Team Objective | Up to 64 players; phased attack/defend objectives (siege, escort, destroy) |
| Team Deathmatch | Team kill-count mode |
| Free-for-All | Every knight for themselves |
| Brawl | Mayhem with unconventional weapons (fish, chairs, bread) |
| Duels and custom play | Small-scale one-on-one fighting, largely on community-run unofficial servers |

### Team Objective maps

Launch-era staples include Lionspire, Rudhelm, Falmire, Galencourt, Darkforest, Coxwell and Aberfell. Post-launch updates added maps such as **The Razing of Askandir** (Tenosian Invasion, June 2022), **The Breach of Baudwyn**, **The Sacking of Bridgetown**, **The Assault on Thayic Stronghold**, **The Reclamation of Montcrux** (Reclamation update, November 2023) and the final map, **Regicide at Trayan Citadel** (Regicide update, May 2024). Each has attack and defend phases; learning the objectives and choke points matters as much as combat.

Tips:
- **Attackers**: push together, carry objectives, and focus enemy archers.
- **Defenders**: hold chokepoints, use barricades, and reset objectives.
- **Siege engines**: catapults, ballistas and battering rams change phases — use them.

## Mounted Combat

Horses spawn on many maps (the Reinforced update in October 2022 added them to more existing maps, such as the Rudhelm siege). On horseback you can trample foot soldiers, land front or rear horse kicks, fight with your equipped weapon, and unhorse riders with a lance.

- **Riders**: keep moving — a stationary horse is an easy kill. Make passes through the enemy line rather than stopping inside it.
- **Infantry**: polearms and spears are the answer to cavalry; stab or overhead the horse as it comes in, and side-step rather than running in a straight line.
- **Dismount near the objective** if you need to push or carry it; horses are for flanking and chasing, not for standing on a point.

## Positioning and Teamfighting

Most deaths in 64-player matches come from being outnumbered, not out-dueled.

- **Fight at the edge of your team's blob, not in front of it.** Let enemies come to your line so two or three allies can hit them.
- **Watch your flanks.** Vanguards and Raiders love hitting people who are locked in a duel.
- **Use overheads and stabs in crowds.** Narrow attacks do not clip teammates the way slashes do.
- **Third-party duels.** If a teammate is fighting someone, hit that enemy from the side — Chivalry 2 is not an honour duel simulator in TO.
- **Respect chokepoints.** Gates, stairs and bridges make a few defenders worth many attackers; defenders should hold them, attackers should push them together and with siege support.
- **Archers**: pick targets engaged with your teammates, where they cannot dodge. Stay near cover and switch to your melee sidearm when flanked.

## Settings Worth Checking

| Setting | Why |
|---|---|
| Field of view | Wider FOV shows flankers; many players raise it |
| First vs third person | Both are fully supported; third person gives more awareness, first person makes reading attack angles easier for some |
| Mouse sensitivity | Lower sensitivity makes drags and accels controllable |
| Crosshair and hit indicators | Helps judge reach and attack direction |
| Voice chat and text filters | Match chat can be loud; configure to taste |

## Progression

- **Class and weapon levels** unlock subclasses, weapons and cosmetics.
- **Gold** is earned by playing and spent on cosmetics.
- **Crowns** are the premium currency.
- **Campaign passes** (like Regicide) add cosmetic unlocks.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Lone-wolfing.** Stay with your team.
- **Wild slashing near teammates.** Friendly fire hurts your team.
- **Spamming block.** You lose stamina and get disarmed.
- **Ignoring objectives.** TO rewards objective play.
- **Chasing archers across the map.** Let flankers deal with them.
- **Fighting on at low health.** Step back behind your line and let health regenerate before re-engaging.

## Advanced Tips

- **Use feints and drags** only when opponents are parrying consistently; otherwise attack straight.
- **Accel your attacks** to beat slow parries.
- **Countering** stops enemy attacks before they land.
- **Play to your weapon's reach.** Spears and polearms should keep distance; daggers should get close.
- **Throwing items** finishes weakened enemies at range.
- **Skill Based Team Balance** keeps matches more even, so steady play pays off.
