Black Mesa: Walkthrough & Tips

A guide to Crowbar Collective's Half-Life remake: survival basics, weapons, a spoiler-light chapter-by-chapter walkthrough with the tricky set pieces explained, the reworked Xen, settings and console tips, and what's coming in the lighting update.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Black Mesa: Definitive Edition (Update 1.5), with a lighting and performance update in development. Check the linked sources if something differs.

Heads-up: Crowbar Collective is working on a lighting and performance update (starting with the first five chapters) and plans to roll it out in stages on the public-beta branch before moving it to the main branch (June 2026 dev update). Existing save files will break when it reaches the main branch. You'll be able to restart from your current chapter (or load a specific map through the console), so note which chapter you're on.

Quick Start

  1. Quicksave constantly. Black Mesa is a classic shooter with no regenerating health. Save before every fight and every jump.
  2. Health and HEV charge are separate. HEV (suit) armor absorbs damage; recharge it at wall-mounted HEV chargers and top up health at medical stations and medkits.
  3. Use the crowbar for crates and headcrabs. Save ammo on weak targets.
  4. Listen. Many enemies (houndeyes, tentacles, soldiers) telegraph with sound; the Blast Pit tentacles hunt you by sound.
  5. Solve set pieces instead of fighting them. Several giant enemies can't be killed with normal weapons. Look for switches, generators and machinery.
  6. Watch your step. Falls hurt, and Xen's platforming is less forgiving than the facility.
  7. Pick a difficulty and stick with it. Hard makes soldiers noticeably more dangerous; Normal is the intended first experience for most players.
  8. Expect roughly 15 to 20 hours. Xen alone is around four hours, compared with about one hour in the original Half-Life.

Weapons

Weapon Best use
Crowbar Crates, headcrabs, conserving ammo
Glock pistol Accurate chip damage early
.357 Magnum High-damage precision shots; soldiers and alien grunts
MP5 (with grenade launcher) General combat; grenades for groups
SPAS-12 shotgun Close range; alt-fire double blast
Crossbow Silent, strong; great underwater and zoomed
RPG Helicopters, tanks and big targets; laser-guided
Tau Cannon Charge shot pierces walls and launches you backwards (used for movement tricks)
Gluon Gun Continuous beam, huge damage, eats ammo fast
Hivehand Regenerating alien ammo with homing hornets
Snarks Thrown creatures that hunt enemies
Frag grenades, satchel charges, tripmines Area denial and ambushes

Ammo tip: the Magnum and crossbow are your best single-target damage for most of the game; save RPG rockets for vehicles and bosses.

Enemies to Know

Enemy Notes
Headcrab / Zombie Crowbar headcrabs; shoot zombies from range
Houndeye Shockwave attack; fight them in groups at range
Bullsquid Spits acid; strafe and shoot
Vortigaunt Charges a lightning attack; interrupt it
HECU marines Flanking, grenades; use cover and grenades back
Alien Grunt Tough, fires hornets; Magnum or explosives
Black Ops assassins Fast and agile
Ichthyosaur Underwater predator; crossbow
Gargantua Can't be beaten with small arms; use the environment

Chapter Walkthrough (Spoiler-Light)

Black Mesa follows Half-Life's 19 chapters.

  1. Black Mesa Inbound – The tram ride. No combat; soak in the atmosphere.
  2. Anomalous Materials – Get your HEV suit and push the sample. Check lockers and talk to staff for small secrets.
  3. Unforeseen Consequences – Survive the Resonance Cascade aftermath. Get the crowbar and learn the ladder and vent routes.
  4. Office Complex – Zombies and houndeyes in offices. Watch for electrified water and turret placements.
  5. "We've Got Hostiles" – The HECU marines arrive. Use cover, pick fights at corners and avoid laser tripmines.
  6. Blast Pit – The tentacle monster. It reacts to sound. Walk rather than run near it, throw grenades to distract it, and restore the oxygen, fuel and power so you can fire the rocket engine test and burn it.
  7. Power Up – A Gargantua roams the power area. Don't fight it head-on; turn the generator back on and use the facility against it.
  8. On A Rail – Ride the rail cars to launch a satellite rocket. Black Mesa shortened this chapter compared with Half-Life. Watch for turrets and soldier ambushes.
  9. Apprehension – Beware the Ichthyosaur in the water; the crossbow is your friend. You'll lose your weapons in this chapter.
  10. Residue Processing – Weaponless platforming through the processing plant. Take it slowly; this is where you rebuild your arsenal.
  11. Questionable Ethics – Laboratory combat with soldiers and aliens. Use the lab equipment and scientists' help.
  12. Surface Tension – A long, expanded outdoor chapter: helicopter, tanks, minefields and a Gargantua. Save your rockets and use cover.
  13. "Forget About Freeman!" – The marines pull out; aliens and remaining soldiers battle it out. Let them fight each other where you can.
  14. Lambda Core – Teleporter puzzles and the reactor. Pick up the Long Jump Module, which you need for Xen.
  15. Xen – The reimagined alien world: low gravity, lush environments and Xen research outposts. Practice long jumps.
  16. Gonarch's Lair – A multi-stage chase fight against the Gonarch. Keep moving, and use explosives and the heavy weapons.
  17. Interloper – A huge alien industrial complex with Vortigaunt labour, new puzzles and heavy combat. Easily the longest Xen chapter.
  18. Nihilanth – The final boss. Destroy the energy crystals feeding it first, then attack its head when it opens.
  19. Endgame – The G-Man.

Set-piece tips

Resource Management by Stage

Stage Chapters What to prioritize
Early facility Inbound to Office Complex Learn the crowbar; don't waste pistol ammo on headcrabs; grab every battery
Marine arrival "We've Got Hostiles" to On A Rail Collect grenades and MP5 grenades from fallen marines; keep the Magnum for tough enemies
Weaponless stretch Apprehension to Residue Processing Your arsenal is taken away; move carefully and pick fights only when needed
Late facility Questionable Ethics to Lambda Core Heavy weapons appear; spend rockets on vehicles only
Xen Xen to Nihilanth Ammo is scarcer and enemies tougher; keep Gluon and Tau ammo for big fights and bosses

Batteries are shared armor. Pick them up even when your suit is nearly full; overflow is wasted, so leave them for later if you're at 100.

FAQ

Is Black Mesa the same as Half-Life? It's a full fan remake with Valve's approval: same story and chapters, rebuilt levels, new voice acting and music, reworked AI and a hugely expanded Xen.

Should I play Half-Life or Black Mesa first? Either works. Black Mesa is the more modern, polished experience; the original is shorter and a piece of history.

How long is Black Mesa? Plan on roughly 15 to 20 hours. Xen alone is about four hours.

Why did my save stop working? The staged lighting update breaks existing saves when it reaches the main branch. Restart from your chapter in the New Game menu or use the map command.

Is there co-op? No official co-op campaign; multiplayer is deathmatch.

When did the Definitive Edition come out? November 25, 2020, as a free update that revamped the non-Xen levels with new lighting features and tougher encounters. The game itself left Early Access with its 1.0 release on March 6, 2020.
