Black Desert has 30+ classes, each with an Awakening (new weapon, new skills) or Succession (stronger original weapon) path you choose at level 56.

New classes often get launch events and stronger-than-average tuning — check current patch notes. For your first character, pick the one whose combos you enjoy: you'll be pressing them for hundreds of hours.
Combat is action-based, non-target. Skills are combos of keys, e.g. Shift + Left Mouse, S + Right Mouse, or quickslots on 1–0. Learn these:

Olvia Academy is a term-based program for level 60+ characters. Find its emblem on the left side of the minimap and navigate to Emma Bartali to enroll (make sure the "General" quest type is enabled). It offers progression quests, Academy Coins for enhancement materials and hammers, and server buffs. The current "Combat BOOST from Olvia Academy" quest chain runs until November 12, 2026 (under Quests (O) - New; complete in order).
Rule of thumb: use guaranteed paths first, event materials second, and raw RNG last.
Grind in the highest zone your Gear Score comfortably handles. Recommended Gear Score is shown on the map for each zone. The newest zones are in Edania (Edania Part 2 is the current top-tier area). Before Edania, older top spots include Ulukita and the Land of Morning Light's harder areas.

Spend Contribution Points to invest in nodes and connect them to towns. Hire workers at Worker Managers; they gather on nodes automatically, which is passive income. Houses in towns can become residences, storage, or workshops.
The Central Market (Marketplace) is where you buy and sell almost everything. Sales are taxed; a Value Pack reduces the tax. Pre-orders fill in queue order.
From September 17 to October 8, 2026 you can fish three types of Pearl-Bearing Clams anywhere; the Precious one sells for 30,000,000 silver.

Is Black Desert free-to-play? No. On Steam it's buy-to-play with a Pearl Shop. Frequent sales make it cheap.
