Beat Saber: Complete Guide
Everything you need to get better at Beat Saber on PC VR: how scoring works, swing technique, difficulty progression, modifiers, the song library and DLC, the latest updates, multiplayer, and PC modding.
Researched September 2026 — current as of v1.45.1 (September 14, 2026, Unity 6000.3.19f1 upgrade). The "biggest update ever" with the new Flux mode is announced for Spring 2027. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Match color and direction. Red notes = left saber, blue notes = right saber; slash in the arrow direction. Dot notes can be cut in any direction.
- Swing from the elbow and wrist, not the shoulder. Big full-arm swings tire you out fast; efficient swings let you play harder levels.
- Follow through. Score depends on the angle before and after the cut. Full swings score higher.
- Avoid bombs and walls. Bombs break your combo; walls (obstacles) drain energy if your head goes into them.
- Progress one difficulty at a time: Easy, Normal, Hard, Expert, Expert+.
- Use No Fail while learning a hard song, but know that it lowers your score.
- Play the Campaign for structured challenges; it's being refreshed in the 2027 update.
- Stretch and hydrate. It's a workout; take breaks.
Scoring
| Part |
Max points |
How to earn |
| Pre-swing |
70 |
A full swing into the note |
| Post-swing |
30 |
A full follow-through after the cut |
| Accuracy |
15 |
Cut close to the center of the note |
| Total per note |
115 |
All three combined |
- Multiplier grows to 8x with a combo; a miss or bomb halves it.
- Chains and arcs (added in later updates) score differently from regular notes: a chain's head note is cut like a normal block and its linked segments score small fixed amounts, while arcs are swing guides that connect two notes rather than targets in themselves. Check the in-game tooltips for exact values.
- Ranks (SS, S, A, B, and so on) depend on your percentage of the max score.

Technique
- Grip: hold controllers loosely; tension tires your arms.
- Stance: feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent.
- Swing: use your wrists and elbows, keep sabers in the "ready" position between notes.
- Reset: after a downward swing, return upward smoothly for the next note.
- Read ahead: look at notes coming, not the one you're slicing.
- Walls: duck and lean with your whole body, not just your head.
- Accuracy: aim for the center of the note to get the 15 accuracy points.
Song Library and DLC

Coming in Spring 2027: the biggest update ever
Announced September 24, 2026:
- Flux: a new single-player mode built around hand tracking, where your hands are the weapons. You'll use Flux Powers like the Flux Tether (power between your palms that slices notes) and punch other note targets. Destroying notes builds Jolt energy; squeeze your fists while slicing to trigger a Jolt for big scores. Controllers are also supported.
- 35 songs at launch for Flux from the Original Soundtracks, Extras, and Anniversary packs, with more planned.
- Refreshed Campaign with a light narrative, new barriers and missions, and checkpoints that unlock exclusive rewards.
- New menu UI and first-time player experience.
- First-ever progression and rewards system.
Common Patterns and How to Read Them
| Pattern |
What it is |
How to handle |
| Stack |
Two or more notes of the same color on top of each other |
Cut them in a single swing through both |
| Window |
Notes spaced so you swing through a gap |
Keep the swing wide and follow through |
| Crossover |
Your arms cross to reach notes on the opposite side |
Lead with the hand that has the next note; uncross immediately |
| Reset |
A note that requires you to reposition your saber |
Use a small wrist flick, not a full arm swing |
| Arc |
A curved line connecting two notes |
Let it guide your swing path from the first note into the second |
| Chain |
A head note followed by linked segments |
Cut the head, then follow through the segments |
| Wall run |
Walls that force you to move or duck |
Move early and keep your head clear |
A Four-Week Progression Plan
- Week 1: Normal and Hard on free songs; focus on posture, relaxed grip, and full follow-through.
- Week 2: Pass Hard maps without No Fail; start chasing A and S ranks.
- Week 3: Expert on songs you know well; use Practice mode for tough sections.
- Week 4: Expert+ on one favorite map; work on accuracy on easier maps in between.
Multiplayer and Party Mode
- Online multiplayer: up to 5-player cross-play matches.
- Party Mode: pass the headset and compete on a local leaderboard.
- Leaderboards: global leaderboards for each song and difficulty.
- Render scale: fixed in v1.45.1; adjust for performance.
- Mirror settings: high and medium mirror presets had several fixes in v1.45.1.
- Room setup: make sure your play area is clear; Beat Saber is very active.
- Saber offset: adjust saber position/rotation in settings for comfort.
- Environment colors: customize colors for visibility.
PC Modding
- Custom songs and mods are popular on PC (via community tools and sites like BeatSaver, plus leaderboards like ScoreSaber and BeatLeader).
- Big engine updates break mods. The July 2026 URP switch and September 2026 Unity 6 upgrade are exactly the kind of updates that break mods until authors catch up. Community mod managers can keep an older game version installed for modding, and Beat Games published a
1.44.1_legacy build alongside the URP switch for players who need the pre-URP version.
- Official Level Editor: Beat Games' own Level Editor gets regular fixes (e.g., in v1.45.1).
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Swinging too hard. Efficient swings last longer.
- Skipping difficulties. Build fundamentals first.
- Ignoring follow-through. It's 30 points per note.
- Playing tired. Accuracy drops quickly.
- Updating a modded install blindly. Back up or use a manager before updating.
- Poor play space. Clear furniture and pets.
Advanced Tips
- Practice mode lets you play sections at lower speed.
- Watch top players' replays to learn swing flow.
- Learn patterns: stacks, windows, crossovers, and resets.
- Use Faster Song to train reading speed.
- Warm up on easier songs before Expert+.
- Chase accuracy on easier maps to build clean habits.
