Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY Edition: Complete Guide

A full guide to Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Edition on PC: Freeflow combat and predator fundamentals, upgrade priorities, a story walkthrough outline with boss strategies, how to hunt all 240 Riddler challenges, the GOTY challenge maps, and tips for running it on modern PCs.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC release of the Game of the Year Edition. Classic game; no further patches expected.

Edition Notes

Version What's included
Original PC release (2009) Base game with PhysX effects
Game of the Year Edition (2010, Steam app 35140) Base game plus extra Challenge Maps, including Crime Alley, Scarecrow Nightmare, Totally Insane, and Nocturnal Hunter (the last two from the Insane Night Map Pack)
Return to Arkham (2016) Unreal Engine 4 remaster for PS4 and Xbox One only; not on PC

Quick Start

  1. Combat is rhythm, not button mashing. Strike, counter when the lightning icon appears over an enemy, and keep your combo going for bonus XP.
  2. Knife enemies need Cape Stun. Stun, then strike; don't try to punch through a knife.
  3. Armed enemies change the game. When guards carry guns, switch to predator tactics: stay on gargoyles, isolate targets, and never fight in the open.
  4. Detective Mode is your radar. It shows enemies (and whether they're armed), weak walls, interactive objects, and Riddler secrets. Use it constantly in predator rooms.
  5. Upgrade armor early, then combat moves, then gadget upgrades.
  6. Riddler content is everywhere. Pick up the maps as they become available; you'll return to earlier areas with new gadgets to finish them.
  7. Save points are automatic. The game autosaves at checkpoints; there's no manual save.
  8. Challenge Maps are separate. Combat and Predator challenges from the main menu are where you practice and chase scores.

Story Walkthrough Outline

The game follows one night on Arkham Island. The Joker escapes as Harley Quinn seizes the asylum's security, and Batman must rescue Commissioner Gordon and stop the Joker's Titan plan. The areas come in roughly this order (per the Gamepressure walkthrough), with Arkham Island's outdoor sections connecting them and trips to the Batcave for new gadgets in between:

Section What to do Key fights
Intensive Treatment Escort the Joker in; things go wrong First combat and predator tutorials
Medical Facility Rescue the doctors; Scarecrow's first hallucination Scarecrow Nightmare 1
Arkham Mansion Forensics tracking and hostage rooms Scarecrow Nightmare 2
Penitentiary Harley Quinn's turf Harley's predator rooms
Botanical Gardens Poison Ivy's plants spread across the island Titan-powered plants
Intensive Treatment (return) and Killer Croc's Lair Descend into the sewers to collect the spores Batman needs for a weed killer Scarecrow Nightmare 3, Killer Croc
Finale Stop Ivy, then face the Joker Poison Ivy, Titan Joker

Victor Zsasz shows up early in Intensive Treatment (the Patient Pacification Chamber) and again in Arkham Mansion, where he threatens Dr. Young. Bane is fought after the Medical Facility and before Arkham Mansion's Administration wing; the Steam achievement order confirms this sequence.

Achievements Worth Planning For

The GOTY Edition has 47 Steam achievements. Story ones come naturally; these need planning:

Achievement Requirement (from Steam) Tip
Biggest Bang Deliver an explosive knock out blow to the Joker (Hard difficulty) Needs a full Hard run; Easy and Normal have their own versions (Big Bang, Bigger Bang)
Crack The E Nigma Solve every riddle on the island Grab each area's Riddler map first
World's Greatest Detective Spirit of Amadeus Arkham revealed Find every Chronicle of Arkham
Freak Show Rodeo Ride a Titan henchman and knock down 5 thugs Easiest in a Titan challenge map
Mano-a-mano Defeat Titan henchman without using Batarangs Dodge, Cape Stun, and punch instead
Rope-a-dope-a-dope String up one henchman and drop him to surprise a second Inverted Takedown from a gargoyle, then wait for a second guard to investigate
Invisible Predator Complete one predator challenge using only Silent Takedowns without detection Pick a small predator map and take it slowly
Freeflow Perfection Perform a perfect combo with all Batman's combat moves Check the move list and work through it in one unbroken combo
Freeflow Gold / Predator Gold Achieve 24 medals on combat / predator challenges Challenge maps only; retry for three medals each
Night Glider Glide continuously for over 100m Launch from the highest rooftop on the island
Perfect Knight 100% Complete Story, all Riddler challenges, and upgrades

Difficulty options are Easy, Normal, and Hard; the Joker achievements are tied to each.

Boss Tips

Boss Strategy
Bane Throw a Batarang to blind him, dodge his charge so he slams into a wall, then climb on and damage his Titan tubes; take down his henchmen between cycles
Scarecrow (Nightmares) Sneak along the platforms while avoiding his searchlight gaze; at the end, climb up and shine the Bat-Signal at him
Killer Croc Walk slowly on the sewer planks; when he charges, throw a Batarang to stun him
Poison Ivy Dodge her attacks; throw Batarangs at her when her bulb opens
Titan Joker Dodge Titans and take them down, then use the Batclaw to pull the Joker down when he's exposed
Victor Zsasz (hostage scenes) Sneak up behind him silently
