Assetto Corsa: Complete Guide

How to set up, drive, and mod Assetto Corsa (2014) in 2026: wheel and gamepad setup, the essential Content Manager + Custom Shaders Patch stack, driving technique, car setups, and online racing.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final Assetto Corsa release (final official version 1.16.x; the game no longer gets content updates) and the Ultimate Edition content. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status note: Kunos Simulazioni finished official development of the original Assetto Corsa years ago. The latest Steam announcements are about Assetto Corsa EVO, which launched in Steam Early Access on January 16, 2025, is still in Early Access (version 0.9 on its store page as of September 2026), and is a separate game. The original is still one of the most-played sims on Steam, and almost all of that is thanks to its modding scene.

Quick Start

  1. Buy the Ultimate Edition, or the base game plus DLC packs on sale. Ultimate includes all official DLC. At launch in 2018, Kunos listed 178 cars and 40 track layouts across 19 circuits. It regularly goes on deep discounts.
  2. Install Content Manager (CM). It's the community launcher that replaces the stock one and is the backbone of modern AC. It handles modding, online servers, and settings much better. The Lite version is free and covers most needs; donating unlocks work-in-progress features and pre-release builds.
  3. Install Custom Shaders Patch (CSP) through Content Manager, which can auto-install and auto-update it and gives it a settings UI (look under CM's Settings for the Custom Shaders Patch section). It adds modern lighting, rain, night driving, and many physics/feature extensions. Most current mods require it.
  4. Add a weather/lighting mod such as Pure or Sol for day/night and weather cycles. Check each mod's page for which CSP version it currently needs.
  5. Wheel users: calibrate in Controls, set the rotation to match the car, and lower FFB gain until it stops clipping. Recommendations follow below.
  6. Gamepad users: raise the speed sensitivity and filter and lower the steering gamma, or the car will feel twitchy. Start with road cars on road tyres.
  7. Start with slow cars on familiar tracks. The Mazda MX-5 Cup, Abarth 500, or the Lotus Exige at Magione or Vallelunga teach weight transfer far better than a GT3 car at Spa.
  8. Hotlap before you race. Learn braking points, then run Quick Races against AI and adjust AI strength and aggression to taste.
  9. Online, pick servers that fit your skill and interest. Public lobbies range from clean racing leagues to traffic "cruise" servers and drift servers. CM's server browser shows the required content and lets you auto-download many mods.
  10. Don't touch setups until you're consistent. Tyre pressures and brake bias are the first things worth learning.

Core Driving Mechanics

Assists and Realism

Setting Beginner Intermediate Realistic
ABS Factory or On Factory Factory (car's real system)
Traction control Factory or On Factory Factory
Stability control Some Off Off
Auto-clutch On On Off (if you have a clutch pedal)
Automatic shifting On Off Off
Racing line On Braking only Off
Tyre wear / fuel / damage Off Low 1x (real)

"Factory" means the car's real-world assists. A GT3 car has ABS and TC, and a 1960s F1 car has nothing.

Tyres and Grip

AC simulates tyre temperatures, pressures, wear, flat spots, and grip that builds up as rubber goes down on the track. What that means in practice:

Driving Technique Basics

  1. Brake hard and in a straight line. Release the brake gradually as you turn in, rather than all at once.
  2. Be patient with the throttle on corner exit, especially in powerful RWD cars.
  3. Look through the corner. On a single screen, set your field of view correctly. Use an FOV calculator with your monitor size and viewing distance.
  4. Use reference points such as brake boards, curbs, and track-side objects. Consistency comes before speed.
  5. Ghost and telemetry. Turn on the ghost car in hotlap mode and use a telemetry app (via CM/CSP) to see where you lose time.

Wheel and FFB Setup

Direct-drive wheels are strong. Lower in-game gain to protect your wrists and hear the car's real feedback.

Game Modes

Mode What it's for
Practice / Hotlap Learning tracks and cars, setting times
Quick Race / Race Weekend Practice + qualifying + race against AI
Drift Scored drift challenges
Time Attack Checkpoint-based time challenges
Career Pre-built series from road cars up to race cars. A good structured way to learn.
Special Events Hand-made challenges with gold/silver/bronze targets
Championships Custom series vs AI
Online Servers with qualifying and races, plus community lobbies

Content Manager and Modding

Car Setup Basics

When you do start tuning:

  1. Tyre pressures: tune to the target hot pressure.
  2. Brake bias: move it rearward for more rotation on entry, and forward if the rear locks.
  3. Wings/aero: add more downforce for grip in fast corners, and less for straight-line speed.
  4. Anti-roll bars: stiffen the front ARB to reduce oversteer, or the rear ARB to reduce understeer.
  5. Differential (preload/power/coast): higher power lock makes exit more stable but gives more understeer. More coast lock makes entry more stable.
  6. Fuel: load just enough for the race plus one or two laps.

Save setups per car and track. You can also download shared setups for popular server/league cars.

FAQ

Is Assetto Corsa still worth it in 2026? Yes, especially with Content Manager and Custom Shaders Patch. The modding scene keeps it alive. Assetto Corsa EVO is the new game from Kunos, but it's a separate purchase.

Do I need a wheel? No, but a wheel gives you far better control and feel. A gamepad works fine with tuned sensitivity settings.

What is Content Manager? A community-made launcher for AC that makes modding, settings, and online play much easier.

What is CSP? Custom Shaders Patch, a community extension of the graphics and physics engine. It's essential for modern mods, rain, and night lighting.

Where do I find traffic/cruise servers? Use CM's online server browser and filter by name, or join the community's Discord groups.

Is Assetto Corsa the same as Assetto Corsa Competizione or EVO? No. Competizione is the GT World Challenge sim, and EVO is the newer, broader sim in Early Access. All three are separate games.
