Assassin's Creed Unity: Complete Guide

A guide to Arno Dorian's Revolutionary Paris: skills and gear priorities, combat and stealth that actually work, parkour controls, side activities, co-op, the Dead Kings expansion and PC tips.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC build (Patch 5 era, 2015) plus Steam achievements, added 12 December 2024 (a separate March 2026 update brought 4K/60 fps to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  1. Combat is harder than in earlier Assassin's Creed games. Groups of enemies will kill you. Parry, dodge gunshots, and use stealth and tools to thin crowds first.
  2. Enemy level matters. Enemies show a skill level (up to five). Fighting groups well above your gear level is a losing battle; come back later.
  3. Your stats come from gear and skills. Gear pieces raise Health, Melee, Stealth and Ranged. Skill points (Sync points) unlock abilities.
  4. Stealth now has a crouch and a cover system. Crouching lowers your profile, and snapping to cover lets you move between corners and take down enemies silently.
  5. Parkour Up and Parkour Down are separate. Hold the free-run input and press the up or down modifier to climb or to descend controllably. Learning Parkour Down saves your life (and your time).
  6. The Café Théâtre is your income. Renovate it and upgrade social clubs to earn passive livres.
  7. Main missions are "black box" assassinations. Scout the area, look for opportunities (keys, distractions, alternate entrances), and pick your approach.
  8. Initiates and Companion App chests are now free. Patch 5 (February 2015) unlocked all blue and gold chests without the external services.

Stats, Skills and Gear

Skill categories

Skills are bought with Sync points earned mainly from main-story Memories. They are grouped into four categories:

Category What it improves
Stealth Takedowns, stealth movement, lockpicking, disguise-style tricks
Melee Combat moves, heavier weapons, combat abilities
Ranged Pistol and rifle handling, throwables, Phantom Blade use
Health Health bars and survival

Priority suggestions:

Gear slots

Arno equips pieces for the head, chest, forearms, waist and legs. Each piece has stats in Health, Melee, Stealth and Ranged, and many have upgrade levels.

Weapons

Weapon type Notes
One-handed swords Balanced; the default choice
Heavy weapons (axes, maces) Big damage, slower
Long weapons (spears, polearms) Reach and crowd control
Pistols and rifles Ranged options; rifles hit very hard
Phantom Blade A Hidden Blade with crossbow capabilities; silent ranged kills
Guillotine Gun (Dead Kings) A heavy axe combined with a grenade launcher

Tools

Smoke bombs, stun bombs, cherry bombs (distraction), money pouches and poison-style bombs support stealth and escapes. Carry smoke bombs at all times; they rescue losing fights.

Combat That Works

Stealth That Works

  1. Scout from above with Eagle Vision. It reveals enemies through walls for a short time.
  2. Enter stealth mode (crouch) near patrol routes. Your detection indicator shows how close you are to being spotted.
  3. Use cover to move between corners and perform cover takedowns.
  4. Follow the "black box" opportunities in main missions: stealing keys, freeing prisoners to cause distractions, or finding alternate routes can make the target easy.
  5. The Phantom Blade kills silently at range. Use it on isolated lookouts before they spot you.

Parkour Controls

Unity's parkour splits into two directions:

Move How it works
Free run Hold the free-run input to run and navigate obstacles
Parkour Up Hold free-run plus the up modifier to climb and vault upward
Parkour Down Hold free-run plus the down modifier to descend controllably
Leap of Faith Jump into hay carts and similar spots from viewpoints
