Arma 3: Beginner-to-Advanced Guide

A practical primer for Arma 3, the open-world military sandbox. It covers controls, infantry fundamentals, vehicles, the Eden editor and Zeus, the mods and modes people actually play, and how to join a unit.

Researched September 2026, current as of Game Update 2.22 (SPOTREP #00120) and its follow-up hotfix (SPOTREP #00121). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Arma 3 is still getting official updates more than a decade after launch. Game Update 2.22 (August 11, 2026) brought MH-80 Ghost Hawks, new languages, and platform support; it also synced the experimental Mac port to the same version as Windows. Creator DLCs like Western Sahara and Expeditionary Forces keep getting their own patches too. Bohemia's newer game on the Enfusion engine is Arma Reforger, but Arma 3 still has the larger mod and mission library.

Quick Start

  1. Play the Field Manual and the Bootcamp campaign first. Bootcamp teaches the basic controls in context. The Field Manual (from the main menu) is your reference.
  2. Check your keybinds. Arma uses a lot of keys, and the defaults are dense. Rebind anything awkward before your first multiplayer session.
  3. Get prone, stay slow. One or two rifle hits can drop you. Move from cover to cover, and don't sprint across open ground.
  4. Zero your scope (Page Up/Page Down) for long-range shots. The current zeroing shows in the top-right weapon info.
  5. Use the map (M) constantly. Most combat happens at 200–800 m, and navigation is half the game.
  6. The action menu is the scroll wheel. Opening doors, getting into vehicles, healing, and picking up items all happen through it. Middle-click or your Action key confirms.
  7. Manage stamina and weight. Heavy gear drains stamina fast. Check your load in the inventory (I).
  8. Join a milsim unit or a well-run public server for the best experience. Pub gameplay without communication falls apart quickly.
  9. Learn the Eden Editor. Building your own training scenario is the fastest way to practice anything.

Vehicles

Vehicle type Notes
Cars and trucks Fast transport. Easy to kill with launchers and MG fire
APCs/IFVs Troop transport plus firepower. Crew roles: driver, gunner, commander
Tanks (Tanks DLC improved them) Deadly, but vulnerable to AT and to being isolated. Keep infantry nearby
Helicopters Transport and CAS. Learn the flight model in the editor first (advanced flight model is optional)
Jets (Jets DLC) Carriers, sensors, and targeting overhauls. Radar and data link matter

FAQ

Is Arma 3 still being updated in 2026? Yes. Game Update 2.22 (with a hotfix after it) is the latest official build as of this writing. Creator DLCs also get their own updates.

Should I buy Arma 3 or Arma Reforger? Arma 3 has the bigger mod, mission, and unit ecosystem. Reforger is newer (on the Enfusion engine) and runs on consoles. Many players own both.

Is there a cheap way to try all the DLC? Bohemia sells an Arma 3 Pass on Steam, a time-limited pass that Bohemia pitches as a way to "try out everything Arma 3 has to offer" before buying. Arma 3 and its DLC also go on deep discount during Bohemia's regular Steam sales.

Do I need DLC to play with friends? Not usually. Missing DLC content is often playable in a limited form on servers. Check server requirements for Creator DLC maps.

What's the best mode for beginners? The Bootcamp campaign, then a KOTH or Antistasi server, then a beginner-friendly milsim unit.

Why does Arma run so badly on my PC? It's heavily CPU-bound. Lower view and object distance, and check the server's FPS (low server FPS makes AI and vehicles stutter).

How do I install mods? Subscribe on the Steam Workshop, then enable them in the Arma 3 Launcher. Save presets for each server or unit.
