America's Army: Proving Grounds: Private Server and Tactics Guide

How to still play AA:PG in 2026 now that official servers are gone, how to host and tune a private server, and the round-based tactics that win Battle Drill and FLO matches.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC build (Ver 342621, hotfix of 3 May 2022). Official servers are shut down; the game is only playable offline and on community-hosted private servers.

Status: official servers and support were shut down on 5 May 2022. The U.S. Army released a final PC patch (22 March 2022) and several hotfixes before the shutdown. That patch unlocked all My Soldier content, raised the FLO team cap to 64 for private servers, and bundled a curated pack of 50 user-made maps. Private servers on Steam are still reachable, and the game can still be downloaded free from Steam. There's no official matchmaking, stat tracking or support anymore.

Quick Start

  1. Install it free from Steam (app 203290). The store page is still live, and Steam now requires Windows 10 or later for the client.
  2. Use the server browser for private/community servers. That's the only online play left. Populations are small, so check at peak evening hours (US time) or join a community Discord that organizes play sessions.
  3. Everything is unlocked. The final patch unlocked all My Soldier content, so you don't need to grind for gear or cosmetics.
  4. Learn the maps offline first. The User Made Training menu lets you tour the 50-map UMM pack offline, and Shoot Houses are still great solo aim practice.
  5. Expect realistic lethality. No crosshair-and-regen shooter habits: a couple of hits can drop you, and you need to bandage when bleeding.
  6. Don't shoot teammates. Friendly fire is on, and team damage is punished by Rules of Engagement penalties on many servers.
  7. Team play wins rounds. Most modes have limited or no respawns, so moving as a fireteam beats lone-wolfing.

What the Game Is

AA:PG is a free, Unreal Engine 3 tactical shooter made by the U.S. Army. It launched in open beta on 29 August 2013 and fully released on 1 October 2015. You play an 11B Infantryman training at JTC Griffin, a fictional MOUT (urban combat) training facility, as part of a Long Range Combined Arms – Recon (LRCA-R) unit. Both teams see themselves as U.S. soldiers, and the enemy always looks like the opposing force.

Game modes

Mode Size (official) What it is
Battle Drill Exercise (BDX) 6v6 Fast, compact rounds focused on basic small-unit maneuvers
Forward Line Operations (FLO) 12v12 officially; up to 64 per team on private servers after the final patch Larger objective missions

Objective types

Map names in the final build use suffixes that tell you the objective, for example FLO_Homestead_C4, FLO_Hospital_VIP, FLO_Hospital_EX, FLO_MoutMcKenna_TH, FLO_Pipeline_AC. The common ones:

Suffix Meaning
C4 Demolition: plant or defend the charge
VIP Escort or eliminate a VIP
EX / TH / AC The other objective variants in the final map pool (the store page lists four objective types in total)

Rather than guessing from the suffix, read the mission briefing on the loading screen. The objective and which side attacks change by map.

Roles and Loadouts

Servers (and map settings) control how many of each role are available. The final patch increased allowed rifleman slots, and admins can multiply role counts with DefaultRoleCountMultiplier. Typical infantry roles:

Role Weapon focus Job
Rifleman M4-series carbine Core of every fireteam; clearing, flanking, objectives
Automatic Rifleman Squad automatic weapon Suppression and holding lanes
Grenadier Rifle with grenade launcher Clearing cover and windows, area denial
Marksman / Sniper Precision rifles Overwatch on long sightlines (sniper slots are limited)

Final-build achievements reference weapons such as the M17 pistol and SCAR-H, so newer weapon options are in the pool too. Since everything is unlocked, try every role in offline training to find what suits you.

Hosting a Private Server (Final-Patch Settings)

The final patch added options specifically for private server owners. Key settings named in the official patch notes:

Setting What it does
MaxTeamSizeFLO=64 Raises the FLO team size (hard cap raised from 12 to 64)
DefaultRoleCountMultiplier Multiplies the role counts set in each map's settings
sDefaultServerMOTD (in AAGame.ini) Sets the message of the day
VOIP port set to 0 Disables in-game VOIP (recommended for servers above 32 players)
fAdminPingListDisplayGroupTime Controls how fast the admin player list cycles groups (for example 5.0)

FAQ

Can you still play America's Army: Proving Grounds? Yes, but only offline or on private servers. Official servers and support shut down on 5 May 2022.

Is it still on Steam? Yes. The store page is up and the game is free to download.

Do I have to unlock gear? No. The final patch unlocked all My Soldier content.

Can I host my own server? Yes. Private servers are supported, and the final patch added FLO team sizes up to 64 and role and MOTD settings.

Is there a PS4 version? There was (its last patch was PSN version 1.44 in December 2021), but its online services ended along with the PC ones. Private servers are a PC feature.

Why do I see players listed as "Alpha (13)" and so on? Since the final patch, the scoreboard shows only the top 12 players per team and labels the team with its player count once it goes past 12. Scroll with the mouse wheel to see everyone.

Can I still set a clan tag? Clan Tags were set through americasarmy.com account settings (restored in December 2021). With official services gone, don't count on that account system still working.

Are my old stats saved? Players who logged in between the final patch and the shutdown had most stats preserved. You can view your stats through client.log from the My Soldier menu.
