Alan Wake: Complete Guide

Everything you need to survive Bright Falls in the original 2012 PC release of Alan Wake: the Fight With Light combat loop, weapons and enemies, an episode-by-episode outline, collectibles and achievement tips, plus how it connects to the rest of the Remedy universe.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the September 2024 Steam update (music licensing change). This is a finished single-player game; check the linked sources if something differs.

Store status note: Alan Wake was pulled from digital stores in May 2017 when its music licenses expired, and returned in October 2018 after Remedy re-secured the rights. On 10 September 2024 a Steam update removed David Bowie's "Space Oddity" and replaced it with a new original song by Petri Alanko, "Strange Moons". The Steam version includes both special episodes, The Signal and The Writer.

Quick Start

  1. Light first, bullets second. The Taken are shielded by darkness. Hold your flashlight on them (boost it for faster burn-off) until the shield flashes away, then shoot. Bullets do nothing useful to a fully shielded Taken.
  2. Streetlights and lit areas are safe zones. Standing in a strong light source heals you, repels enemies, and usually creates a checkpoint. When overwhelmed, run for the light.
  3. Master the dodge. A well-timed dodge as an enemy swings triggers a slow-motion cinematic dodge. It is the single most important survival skill, especially against groups and on Hard or Nightmare.
  4. Flares are panic buttons. A hand flare creates a bubble that the Taken will not enter. Light one when surrounded, reload, and burn shields from inside the bubble.
  5. Flashbangs and the flare gun are crowd killers. A flashbang or a flare gun round destroys most regular Taken outright. Save them for groups and big enemies instead of single weak Taken.
  6. Batteries matter. Boosting drains your flashlight. The basic flashlight slowly recharges part of its charge on its own, but you will still burn through batteries in heavy fights. Swap batteries manually before a fight, not in the middle of one.
  7. Follow the yellow paint. Supply caches and chests are marked with paint that only shows up under your flashlight. Sweep your beam across rocks, trees and walls as you explore.
  8. You lose your gear between episodes. Almost every episode strips your weapons at some point. Do not hoard; use your flashbangs and flare gun rounds when they help.

The Fight With Light System

Core loop

Step What you do Why
1. Spot Enemies emerge from the dark; the screen blurs and a slow-motion camera often reveals them Gives you a moment to prepare
2. Burn Focus the flashlight beam (boost) on a target Strips the darkness shield; the target flashes when exposed
3. Shoot Revolver, shotgun or hunting rifle while the shield is down Only exposed Taken take real gun damage
4. Dodge Dodge right as a melee attack comes in Cinematic dodges avoid damage entirely
5. Reposition Back into light, use flares, or break line of sight Enemies come in waves; never fight in the open dark

Light sources and tools

Tool Use
Flashlight (standard) Your main tool; beam boost strips shields and drains battery
Heavy-duty flashlight Stronger beam, burns shields faster; appears as the game goes on
Lantern A weaker light source you get in some sections
Hand flare Emergency safe zone around you for a short time
Flare gun Explosive burst of light; kills most regular Taken in the blast
Flashbang grenade Thrown burst of light; kills groups of regular Taken and destroys possessed objects
Streetlights, floodlights, generators Safe zones and checkpoints; some need you to start a generator by tapping in rhythm
Vehicle headlights Driving through Taken with high beams on burns and kills them

Weapons

Weapon Notes
Revolver Reliable, plentiful ammo; your default damage tool
Shotgun / pump-action shotgun Huge close-range damage; the achievement "Two For the Price of One" wants two kills from a single blast
Hunting rifle High damage per shot, slow reload; good for heavy Taken
Flare gun Rare and precious; crowd clearance and big enemies

Enemies

Episode Walkthrough Outline

Alan Wake is structured like a TV season, with recaps at the start of each episode. The main game has six episodes, and the Steam version adds two special episodes.

Episode What happens (spoiler-light) Key tips
1. Nightmare Alan and Alice arrive in Bright Falls, head to the Bird Leg Cabin, and Alice vanishes. Alan wakes up after a car crash with a week missing and has to walk through the woods to find help. Learn the flashlight and dodge here. This is where you first meet the Taken and the manuscript pages.
2. Taken With Sheriff Sarah Breaker in town and his literary agent Barry Wheeler arriving, Alan learns someone has Alice and wants his manuscript. The first long night section; start sweeping for yellow paint to find caches.
3. Ransom The ransom exchange and its aftermath; FBI Agent Nightingale is on Alan's trail. Supply management starts to matter; keep flashbangs for groups.
4. The Truth Alan wakes up at the Cauldron Lake Lodge under Dr. Emil Hartman's care, then heads out to the Anderson farm. The farm stage section is memorable ("Child of the Elder God" achievement: stay above low health during it).
5. The Clicker The hunt for the Clicker, an object tied to Alice's past. Longer fights; practise cinematic dodging against heavy Taken.
6. Departure The final push toward Cauldron Lake. Tornado encounter and final set pieces; stock up on every light source you find.
Special 1: The Signal Set inside Alan's mind after the ending. Words from the manuscript materialise as light-based objects you can "activate". Words that appear in the world can become ammo, flares or obstacles; alarm clocks are this episode's collectible.
Special 2: The Writer Continues directly from The Signal and leads to the true close of Alan's first story. More puzzle-heavy; Night Springs video game boxes are this episode's collectible.

Collectibles

Collectible Where it appears Tips
Manuscript pages Main game, all episodes Some pages only appear on Nightmare difficulty. "Picking Up After Yourself" needs all Normal-mode pages; "Collector's Edition" needs Nightmare-only pages too.
Coffee thermoses Main game (100 total per Wikipedia) Many are near caches or off the main path; they glow faintly. "Hypercaffeinated" wants all of them.
TV sets (Night Springs) Main game Stand and watch the whole episode to count it for "Couch Potato".
Radios (KBF-FM) Main game Let each radio play fully for "KBF-FM".
Signs (local history) Main game Read every informational sign for "Bright Falls Aficionado".
Chests / hidden caches Main game Marked by glowing paint under the flashlight; "Every Nook and Cranny" needs them all.
Can pyramids Main game Shoot or knock over five for "Carny".
Alarm clocks The Signal Ten hidden alarm clocks for "Tick Tock".
Night Springs video games The Writer Ten of them for "Licensed Properties".
Cardboard standees The Signal Find all for "Cardboard Companions".

Collectible strategy: Do your first run for the story on Normal and pick up what you see. Then use a collectible map for a cleanup run. Because you need Nightmare anyway for "Alan, Wake Up" and Nightmare-only pages, combine the Nightmare run with manuscript cleanup.

Difficulty and Achievements

The Steam version has 67 achievements. Useful groupings:

Difficulty advice: Normal is the right first run. Hard is noticeably stingier with ammo and batteries. Nightmare makes Taken tougher and supplies scarcer; lean on flares and cinematic dodging and never fight away from light if you can help it.

FAQ

Is Alan Wake still sold on Steam? Yes. It was delisted in May 2017 over music licensing, returned in October 2018, and got a 2024 patch replacing "Space Oddity" with "Strange Moons". If you already owned it, it never left your library.

Do I need to play this before Alan Wake 2? It helps a lot. Alan Wake 2 follows directly from this game and the two special episodes. The Remastered version tells the same story with updated visuals.

Are The Signal and The Writer included? Yes, both special episodes are part of the Steam release.

How do I unlock Nightmare difficulty? Finish the game once. Nightmare adds extra manuscript pages, so it doubles as your collectible cleanup run.

How long is it? The main story is a mid-length action game, and the two specials add a few more hours. Completionists should plan on a second full run for Nightmare.

What is the difference between Alan Wake and American Nightmare? American Nightmare is a standalone, more arcade-like spin-off set in Arizona. It is a separate purchase and not required for the main story, though it fills in some background.
