# Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition: Complete Guide

A strategy guide to AoE3: DE covering the economy, Home City decks, ages, unit counters, civ picks, and what The Baltic Powers (September 2026) added: the Danes, the Poles, Regicide and Independence.

*Researched September 2026, current as of Update 19.18309 and The Baltic Powers DLC (both 10 September 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.*

## Quick Start

1. **Never stop producing Settlers.** Keep your Town Center queue running for the whole game. Idle TC time is the most common beginner mistake.
2. **Send a shipment every time one is ready.** Home City shipments are free resources, units and upgrades. Build a deck so the first cards come quickly.
3. **Scout with your Explorer.** Collect treasures early (free resources and XP), find hunts, and spot the enemy's build.
4. **Hunt first, then farm later.** Early food comes from huntable animals. Move Settlers to berries, then to Mills/Farms (or your civ's equivalent) as hunts run out.
5. **Age up on time.** The five ages are Age I (Discovery/Exploration), Age II (Commerce, also called Colonial), Age III (Fortress), Age IV (Industrial) and Age V (Imperial). Each age-up lets you pick a politician (or a civ-specific equivalent) that gives a bonus. Hitting Age II on time is the most important habit.
6. **Learn the counter triangle.** Heavy infantry beats cavalry, cavalry beats skirmishers and artillery, skirmishers beat heavy infantry. Most fights are won or lost here.
7. **Claim Trading Posts.** Trade routes and native settlements give ongoing resources, XP and native units.
8. **All cards are unlocked in DE.** You don't need to grind Home City levels. Start with a pre-built deck, then edit it.

## The Economy

### Resources

| Resource | Main sources | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Food | Hunts, berries, Mills/Farms, livestock, fishing | Hunts are the fastest early source |
| Wood | Trees, some cards/crates | Houses and most buildings need it |
| Coin | Mines, Plantations, Markets/Banks for some civs | Mines run out, so move on or plant |
| XP | Kills, treasures, Trading Posts | Speeds up shipments |
| Export/Influence | Specific civs only | Used for mercenaries, specific units and upgrades |

### Rules of thumb

- **Settler count** is your economy. Watch it on the score screen or spectator panel after each game.
- **Build Houses ahead of time.** Getting population-blocked stops production.
- **Research gather upgrades** at the Market (hunting, wood, mining) as soon as your economy can support them.
- **Push your hunts toward your Town Center** where possible so walking distance stays short.

## Home City Decks and Shipments

A deck is the set of cards you can ship in a match. Tips:

- **Age I (Discovery) cards:** eco cards (extra Settlers, resource crates, gather-rate upgrades).
- **Age II (Commerce/Colonial):** your first military shipments, plus more eco.
- **Age III (Fortress) onward:** strong military shipments and unit upgrades.
- Think about your plan (rush, semi-fast Fortress or boom) and shape the deck around it. Pre-built decks are a good starting point.
- **New in Update 19.18309:** the Deck Manager has hotkeys (Ctrl+N new deck, Ctrl+S save, Del delete, Ctrl+Del fast-delete), a Revolution Decks toggle for revolution cards, and a Home City data display.

## The Ages and Politicians

| Age | Typical goal |
|---|---|
| I Discovery | Boom Settlers, collect treasures, pick an age-up politician |
| II Commerce (Colonial) | First army and the first real fights, Trading Posts, mills or plantations |
| III Fortress | Stronger units, artillery arrives, Forts on some civs |
| IV Industrial | Late-game economy and factories for many civs |
| V Imperial | Final upgrades |

Some civs can **Revolt** in Fortress/Industrial Age. The civ turns into a new nation with new cards and units (for example Brazil, Indonesia or Egypt) but gives up Settler production. This is a "win now" pivot. The Poles get **two new Fortress Age Revolutions** (Cossack and Teutonic Knights themed). The Danes **cannot Revolt at all** in exchange for cheaper age-ups.

## Unit Counters

| Unit class | Strong against | Weak against |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy infantry (Musketeers etc.) | Cavalry | Skirmishers, artillery |
| Skirmishers | Heavy infantry | Hand cavalry |
| Hand cavalry (Hussars etc.) | Skirmishers, artillery, archers | Heavy infantry, pikes |
| Light cavalry/Dragoons | Heavy cavalry | Heavy infantry, skirmishers |
| Anti-artillery cannons | Artillery | Cavalry |
| Siege artillery/Mortars | Buildings | Everything mobile |

**Micro tips:**

- Keep skirmishers *behind* a meat shield of heavy infantry or pikes.
- Snipe enemy artillery with cavalry.
- Don't send cavalry into massed musketeers.
- Watch hitpoint bars. After Update 19.18309 the HUD shows them in player colours, and units and buildings show kill counters.

## Civilizations (as of September 2026)

The base game has 18 civs (16 original or reworked civs, plus the United States and Mexico which are now bundled in). DLCs add more:

| DLC | Civs added |
|---|---|
| United States (2021) | United States |
| The African Royals (2021) | Ethiopians, Hausa |
| Mexico (2021) | Mexico |
| Knights of the Mediterranean (2022) | Italians, Maltese |
| The Baltic Powers (10 September 2026) | Danes, Poles |

### Danes (The Baltic Powers)

Official bonuses and units:

- Start with a **Customs House**. It earns income whenever *other* players send shipments, and it holds your resource-crate cards so they don't take up deck slots.
- **Ages are cheaper, but Revolutions are unavailable.**
- All military land units have **Royal Guard** upgrades.
- **Round Church**: can be built up to three times, and its defensive attack is effective against Mercenaries and Outlaws.
- **Watch House**: a Danish House with extra line of sight that trains and upgrades the **Snaphane**, a militia specialised against Outlaws and artillery (it loses HP over time like other militia).
- **Gunboat**: a levy boat in the Commerce Age that loses HP over time but can harass warships.

**Playstyle:** economic and defensive. Age up efficiently and build up a Royal Guard army.

### Poles (The Baltic Powers)

- Start with a **Hetman**, a powerful melee cavalry hero with area damage who can collect treasures and build Trading Posts and Town Centers.
- **Buildings cost less and build faster, but are weaker.**
- **Folwark**: available from the start, replaces the Mill, supports 5 gatherers and gives 10 population. Each Folwark can be specialised individually (it can also train Retainers).
- **Sejm**: built in the Commerce Age by Settlers or the Hetman; combines the Capitol and the Factory and generates resources based on your Settler population.
- Units: **Winged Hussar** (elite heavy cavalry from the Stable, Commerce Age onward), **Retainer** (heavy hand cavalry from the Stable and Folwark, Commerce Age onward), and **Piechur** (ranged infantry that replaces the Skirmisher at the Barracks).
- Access to **2 new Fortress Age Revolutions**, themed on the Cossacks and the Teutonic Knights.

**Playstyle:** a booming farm economy that feeds a cavalry army.

### Beginner-friendly picks

- **British:** Manors (houses) produce Settlers, a straightforward boom, and solid Musketeers and Longbowmen.
- **French:** strong Coureur des Bois settlers and Cuirassiers. Forgiving economy.
- **Dutch:** Banks give a steady coin income, but Settlers cost coin and have a lower cap. Good for learning defensive play.

## Game Modes (2026)

- **Supremacy:** the standard mode, including ranked.
- **Treaty:** a no-rush period, then late-game war.
- **Deathmatch:** you start with huge resources.
- **Regicide (new, 10 September 2026):** Eliminate the enemy Regent for an instant win. Regents can't hide in buildings, so scouting, protection and timing matter much more.
- **Independence (new):** civs with no XP and no Home City shipments, with adjusted bonuses. It tests fundamentals.
- **Other custom modes** (such as Tycoon) were added in post-launch updates; check the lobby's game-mode list.
- **Art of War challenges and Historical Battles** (including co-op Historical Battles) are for practice and single-player content.

The Baltic Powers also added the **Scottish House of Stuart**, **Sámi** and **Inuit** as native allies. It added mercenaries such as the **Gallowglass**, **Cranequinier** and **Fortified Wagon**, and Outlaws like **Harpooners** and **Whaling Ships**. There are over 25 new maps, including the Northwest Passage and an Iceland map with a volcano, plus a Livonia Historical Map.

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

- **Letting the TC idle** or banking resources. Spend constantly.
- **Forgetting shipments.** An unsent shipment is wasted tempo.
- **Building one unit type.** A pure musketeer army loses to skirmishers and artillery. Mix your army and scout what the enemy is making.
- **Walling everything with no army.** In AoE3, map control and Trading Posts matter more than walls.
- **Skipping gather upgrades** because you want units right now.
- **Fighting under enemy Town Centers or Outposts** without siege or enough numbers.
- **Picking Danes and planning to Revolt.** They can't.

## Advanced Tips

- **Card order matters more than the deck.** Plan your first four to six shipments before the match, since that sets your build's timing.
- **Use the Spectator overhaul to study replays.** In 19.18309 the top panel shows team populations and units/buildings lost, and the queue panel shows which shipments a player sent. Watch a strong player of your civ and copy their card order.
- **Charged Actions:** units with special abilities can now have them toggled per selection. Use them deliberately.
- **Trading Post timing:** an early Trading Post on the route pays for itself. On native settlements, pick natives whose techs or units cover what your civ lacks.
- **Hotkey your Town Center, Barracks-type buildings and Market** so you can macro without leaving the fight.
- **Deny treasures and hunts** with your Explorer in the first minutes.

## FAQ

**Do I need the DLCs to play online?**
No. You can play against DLC civs without owning them. You need the DLC to *play as* the Danes, Poles, Italians and so on.

**What changed in Update 19.18309?**
A Spectator Mode overhaul, a Deck Manager upgrade, HUD hitpoint bars in player colour, kill counters, a Charged Actions toggle, a delete-building command for claiming Trading Posts, and many balance and campaign fixes. Read the full notes on the official Age site.

**Are all Home City cards unlocked?**
Yes. All cards are unlocked by default in DE, and there are pre-built decks.

**How do Revolutions work?**
In later ages some civs can turn into a revolutionary nation with new cards and units, but they lose Settler production. It is a late, all-in move.

**What's the best civ for beginners?**
The British or French. Their economies are straightforward and forgiving.

**What is Regicide?**
A mode where killing the enemy Regent wins instantly. Regents can't garrison, so protect yours.
